Silva likely 5th starter?

It's not like the only options are Shark and Silva.

Yeah...I sure as hell don't see how Silva has "earned" anything.

 

You don't think he has out played Shark to this point? Silva has basically had two bad innings all of spring training. He has shown that his sinker is more effective and he has shown some glimmer that he can be somewhat effective as a 4-5 starter. I was as big on Shark as anybody prior to spring training, but based on his outings so far he hasn't shown any improvement and I'm coming around to agreeing with Gooney and others that think his window of opportunity is quickly closing.

 

Marshall and Gorzelanny are starting options as well.

 

But I think the Cubs would rather have one of them coming out of the pen and the other one gets the 4th spot until Lilly comes back. It really does come down to Silva and Shark now that Diamond has pitched his way out of consideration.

 

I wonder if they'd consider Berg as an option? Piniella seems to like him a lot and has already said that he's made the team.

Because we're more concerned with our 2nd lefty in the bullpen than our 5th starter. I'd probably shoot up Wrigley if I was Marshall

Like SSR said, the 5th starter's job is more important than the second lefty. That said, you're probably right and the job has been Silva's to lose from the beginning.

It sounds kind of like the thought is that it'd be one of Marshall/Gorzo in the rotation and one of Silva/Shark in the rotation. The other one of each of those groups would pitch out of the pen.

I was kind of going with the assumption Lilly will be back mid april so after 2 weeks which a 5th starter is barely needed Shark goes back down? Or does Gorz have any options left?

I'd guess somebody like Russell or Caridad would be sent down before Shark or Gorz would be. That's assuming both are pitching fairly well when Lilly returns from the DL.

 

And unless Silva is pitching well, I'd guess he'd be the one moving to the pen instead of either Marshall or Gorz.
