Chris Henry, the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver who died in a traffic accident last year, had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) -- a form of degenerative brain damage caused by multiple hits to the head -- at the time of his death, according to scientists at the Brain Injury Research Institute, a research center affiliated with West Virginia University.

"We would have been very happy if the results had been negative, but multiple areas of Chris Henry's brain showed CTE," said Julian Bailes, Director of BIRI and chairman of neurosurgery at West Virginia. Bailes and his colleagues plan to present results of their forensic examination at a news conference Monday afternoon.

Researchers have now discovered CTE in the brains of more than 50 deceased former athletes, including more than a dozen NFL and college players, pro wrestler Chris Benoit and NHL player Reggie Fleming.

Not just the players:

Trib[/url]"]Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit when he was stopped by authorities in northern Michigan last week.

A Roscommon County sheriff's department report says Lewand's breath test came back at 0.21 percent about an hour after he was stopped for erratic driving Friday night. Authorities say he was pulled over after his sport utility vehicle was seen crossing from one lane to another after leaving a bar's parking lot.

Lewand told authorities he has "not drank in a year and a half" and was a designated driver who had stopped at the bar to pick up a friend.

Lewand was issued a citation for operating while intoxicated in Denton Township, Mich., about 150 miles northwest of Detroit. He has apologized for his actions.

If I'm an NFL player. I find two maybe 3 bars/clubs/strip clubs in town, and I go to them exclusively. I make cool w/ the owners, bouncers, and bartenders. I buy the bar out a couple times a month. I tip big. That way when I feel the urge to slap a stripper, punch a bouncer, or rape a girl in the bathroom I can do so and have acquintances to back up whatever story I tell police if I get caught.

That's what Marvin Harrison did (in fact he owned the places) and he ended up killing a dude--allegedly.

And he played like 15 years and was considered a model NFL citizen while he was killing people on the side. Of course, if you are a stripper-beating, bouncer fighting, rapist then you are probably going to get caught eventually anyway.....but be smart enough to do your dirt under the cover of integrity.

Agreed. And why the hell don't these guys have one of their boys be a designated driver? A lot of pro athletes have at least 3-5 people with them at all times, why not make one of them drive you everywhere? There's no reason to ever have a DUI when you make that much money. Really never an excuse, but especially when you can afford a driver or at least a limo or cab.

They don't even need to have "one of their boys be the DD" just hire a [expletive] limo/driving service. I agree though, professional athletes should never be in a position to have to be driving themselves around after drinking/partying/doing drugs/being drunk or high/etc.

LAS VEGAS -- The 2-year-old son of former NFL star quarterback Randall Cunningham has died in what authorities on Wednesday called an apparent backyard hot tub accident.

The Clark County coroner's office identified the child as Christian Cunningham, and said the cause of death was pending.

Las Vegas police Officer Marcus Martin, a department spokesman, said the death appeared to have been an accidental drowning, but authorities were still investigating.

Nothing if not predictable.

On a related note, as I was hitting the quote button a commercial for Hot Tub Time Machine came on.

Good news on the Chris Johnson front:

Under the terms of the five-year, $12 million contract he signed prior to his rookie season, Johnson has reached escalators in the deal that could pay him up to an additional $2.5 million in salary in 2012. The Titans could turn that money into a signing bonus in 2010 and combine it with his scheduled base salary of $550,000 for this fall.

I didn't figure the Titans would let CJ hold out into training camp, but it's good to see some movement in the direction of getting him extended.

I fail to see how this relates to the football offseason.
