Have you ever thought about switching teams?

Just because of the losing and bad luck, I'm sure it's had to cross some of your minds to think about adopting a new baseball team, whether it is the White Sox or some other team in the MLB?

The protocol dictates that switching teams is not optional, but it doesn't stop some people. I ask only because of a recent Rick Reilly ESPN column where he puts a slight dig in his column stating that if you're a Cubs fan, then make the switch already.

For me, some of the stereotypes such as all Cub fans are drunks who only go to enjoy the outdoor beer garden and that we are dumb -- I realize that is all preposterous. I do sometimes think though that the whole aura of the team though, with "bleeding Cubbie blue," and the obsession of the ivy, as well as Ron Santo and Ronnie Woo Woo, I sometimes do think that our team is rather dorky. Am I alone with such thoughts?

I don't think I could switch teams even if I wanted to. I've started enjoying the Royals since going to school in Columbia. I could see myself getting into a Royals pennant race :rotfl: . I'm even pretty sure I'll buy season tickets if I move there after graduation (they're just SO cheap). But lets say the Cubs were playing a September makeup game against KC and the Cubs had already wrapped up the division, but the Royals were tied in their race. I'm pulling for the Cubs all the way. I just can't imagine a scenario where I would want the Cubs to lose a game. Well, unless it somehow puts the Cardinals in the playoffs...

God no. Do you think I went through all the pain and strife with the Cubs so I could eventually give up on them and switch to another team? If the Cubs ever win it, it will make everything worthwhile. If they don't, oh well it's just baseball.

From the Cubs, absolutely not. I've contemplated picking a second NFL team to follow until Al Davis dies, though.

Does Al Davis's current state even count as "alive"?

I'm not sure. The wife was a bit horrified when she saw what he looked like the other night.

You see I classifed every Cub fan on this board as being "stupid." (As we are stupid, but not dumb) We know we should follow another team, but for whatever reason (genetic, or self-inflicted) we remain with the Cubs, no matter how stupendously horrible they play. We all don't want to jump off the bandwagon in fear of when we do the Cubs would finally reach that championship.

So no, I've never considered jumping to another team.

I have an emergency backup team in case the Cubs become unbearable, like they did early in 06. This is supposed to be fun, you know. I won't feel the same joy the diehards will if they ever win it all, but I don't go through the same pain year after year either. Life's too short to place your personal happiness in the hands of a bunch of spoiled jocks who don't know you exist. If a TV show sucks, you change the channel. The Cubs are a TV show that lasts a lifetime. When they suck, you change the channel. Saying you don't have a choice is a copout, IMO. That said, they've been relatively good this decade so we're way luckier than some earlier generations were.

Every time the Cubs have some success, theres a fair share of bandwagoners that jump on. A lot of them jump off when they hit a nose dive, but some get sucked in. Its not just the Cubs though. Back in 2005, I remember seeing a lot of White Sox jerseys walking around the north shore, and they vanished real quick.
