Just thought I would bump this up with the new article out in the Trib about Figgins. Lou has some comments in there, and yup speed is going to be the "theme" this offseason just like I thought.

 

Asked if Kosuke Fukudome would be his leadoff man in 2010, Lou Piniella replied: "It's a possibility. I would think that we'd probably try to add more speed, but we'll see

As for the rest of that, well hopefully they realize that good baseball players win baseball games and we have a shortage of those on offense. Speed won't rectify that. Better players will.

adding athletic players isn't a stupid idea, it will be stupid if chone is added at a ridiculous contract

 

don't forget that iwamura is out there and probably on hendry's short list as well

Iwamura would be a terrific bench player, backing up second, third and the outfield. Thing is that most teams are probably going to view him as a starter and offer to pay him as such.

I don't like Lou complaining about the lack of stolen bases this year. Anecdotally, he seems to love the hit and run and running into unnecessary caught stealings. I fear the green light will be given more next year, even if its for non-speedy guys.

Of course the Cubs lack of athleticism is the cause for their offensive struggles this season. Not the .679 OPS from catchers, .674 OPS from 2B, and .747 OPS from LF all of which are in the bottom third or so of the NL.

Let Hill catch. Call up Vitters, and if Fukudome doesn't play well get Brett Jackson up within the month of April. Now that's a team of grit, heart, and winning attitudes. Go Cubs Go!

I think the offseason key should be to get less bad. Finally letting Aaron Miles go would be a nice start. And Id really rather not see any salary dumping, including but not limited to Lee, Lilly, Bradley, or Fukudome. I really hope they resist the temptation to sell high on Lee and Lilly. we can still win this thing next year, and they'll both be crucial compnents of the team and I dont think that a few prospects are worth closing this window any faster than it already is.
