The Dodgers have been very beatable as of late. Their once 300 game divison lead has been whittled down to 3.5 by Jason Marquis and the Rockies. Maybe Im juts being over optimistic, but I think we can take 3 from these guys. At least a 2-2 split. Unfortunately, I cant see the Padres giving the Cards any trouble, so were playing to tread water here.

Here's to seeing the Cincinnati Gorzelanny instead of the Denver Gorzelanny.

I'm not sure what will get me first - the standings or this run of five straight late night games. I'm getting too old for this west coast [expletive].

Ditto. I hope Gorz turns out to be more than just a bum slayer, but I don't have my hopes up.

Marquis, I hope the Rockies aren't foolish to count on him in playoffs.

Thanks Fred!

Also, if Gorz has a terrible start, I could see him being pulled from the rotation with Z on his way back.

Only 2 more late games...

I cant see Gorz staying in the rotation even if he has a good start unless someone else ends up on the DL which really wouldnt shock me. Wells has earned his keep, and unless they decide to go with a 6 man rotation, Gorz is the odd man out.

That kinda happens when you go 7-11 in August to date, like the Dodgers (Rockies are 11-6 in August). And I agree with you, when looking at the posible pitching matchups, the Cubs SHOULD win 3 of 4 (Weaver/Gorzy/, Wolf/Wells/, Haeger/Lilly, Billingsley/Dempster), plus if you pitch carefully around the ONLY three legit hitters in that lineup (ManRam/Kemp/Either, the Dodger's lineup isn't that impressive. With that said, I would be estatic if the Cubs could managed to get a split.

I think it's a little ambitious saying we've got the edge in 3 of those matchups...they are even in my eyes

Weaver: 5.56 ERA/1.44 WHIP/47:27 K:BB

Gorz: 5.24 ERA/1.16 WHIP/22:8 K:BB

Wolf: 3.43 ERA/1.14 WHIP/123:43 K:BB

Wells: 3.01 ERA/1.19 WHIP/71:27 K:BB

Haeger: 3.86 ERA/0.71 WHIP/2:0 K:BB (one start, 7 IP) - career minors: 3.87/1.41/673:429

Lilly: 3.42 ERA/1.14 WHIP/111:27 K:BB

Billingsley: 3.70 ERA/1.24 WHIP/144:66 K:BB

Dempster: 4.28 ERA/1.39 WHIP/117:53 K:BB

I'd give the Cubs an advantage in games 1 and 3 (Gorz and Lilly) and the Dodgers an advantage in game 4 (Billingsley). Game 2 (Wolf/Wells) is tough to call - I hadn't realized Wolf had been that good this year.

Thanks for doing the research :D Red's point is still valid that it is very feasible to win 3 out of 4 here. But, the whole Cobs thing...

Big Z rehabbing in Peoria: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 3-2 GO-FO, 46-33 pitches-strikes.

Geovany Soto better be in the starting lineup tomorrow and Saturday while I'm at the games.

Totally agree...LA is reeling, lost that big lead and Manny is swinging at balls like mad. 3 out of 4 is likely.

The Cards are already getting complacent. Put in a real bad lineup card 2 nites ago and lost, putting Ankiel in tonite and benching Ludwick. Of course, they ARE playing the Pads. But again, Holliday has zoomed back to Earth....like 1 for 11 w/1rbi. Pujols has been hacking, scoring more runs on steals than homers.

Win this opener and LA will funk even deeper...lose it and I don't know!

Tonight' the key Cubs beat LA and they got a real good chance to take at least 1 of the remaining 3 for a split. Got to keep the struggling team from getting up off the ground however, the Cubs have shown a real knack for letting struggling teams wake up.

Lou: "It's these GD big ballparks. We don't have the team built for it...prickly pear margarita..grumble grumble"

Theriot first pitch ground out, Bradley and Lee both fly out to the warning track.
