Anyone disappointed Hendry didn't do more?

Ahhh..more of the Great Jim Hendry:

MSNBC 7/30/2009 Chicago Cubs: General manager Jim Hendry tinkered too much with a good thing last winter — foolishly giving Milton Bradley a three-year deal, and sacrificing Mark DeRosa and Jason Marquis in the process. And now he's given up two high-velocity right-handed arms in Kevin Hart and Jose Ascanio to fill a left-handed need he failed to address previously, and received only marginal talent in return — Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow.

//nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/32245552/ns/sports-baseball/page/2/

Gorzelanny has a significantly higher upside than Hart. Ascanio will likely be better than Grabow in the long term, but Grabow will probably help us more this year.

As for giving up Marquis - his replacement in the rotation, Randy Wells, has better numbers than Marquis this season.

Marquis: 3.47 ERA; 64:41 K:BB; 1.267 WHIP

Wells: 2.84 ERA; 60:21 K:BB; 1.147 WHIP

But, but you left out the most important stat: Marquis has more wins....oh, and he was an All Star too!!!

In retrospect, moving Marquis was not a good move. However, considering he was mediocre at best while with this team and horribly overpaid, it was a great deal at the time.

Can you imagine the uproar prior to the season if it came out that Hendry had an opportunity to move Marquis and didn't.

"The playoffs are a crapshoot." I think that is my least favorite myth on this board. Of course the Cubs are playing better, they get to beat the crap out of Mike Hampton and Russ Ortiz. Do the Cubs get to face Mike Hampton and Russ Ortiz in the playoffs? Maybe then the playoffs are a crapshoot. Otherwise the only proper use of the words "Cubs," "playoffs," and "crap" will be references to the offense and Soriano's performance.

Except that it's not a myth. The Cubs getting swept in the first round last year and the Cardinals winning it all in 2006 prove it.

And the shitty Astros bullpen we pounded right? They're terrible right?

The homeless shelter called and wants to know why you are not over there.

I have had enough. I am going to take the time I would have invested in the Cubs and Cubs-related matters and do something productive with it, like learn a new language, or volunteer at the homeless shelter, or work on that Twilight fan fiction I've been meaning to get to.

I will see you gentlemen next year when we can once again talk about "if everyone is healthy and producing like they should" what will theoretically happen.

You can make a huge laundry list of wasted $ that Hendry has been involved in. Adding Aram for a bag of balls is about the only smart move he's made. I'm sure there are others but his poor moves way outweigh the rest. He needs to be gone. If this farm system does not start developing talent (not AAAA talent either) then that needs revamped too. It's all about the farm system. The $120 mill budget should be for plugging a hole w/ top talent here or there...not for building a roster. I've always admired how Kenny Williams does things. He is proactive & does not tend to sign off on as many long-term, no trade contracts. All Hendry does is handties himself.

Even if this was meant to be serious, Marquis really only has more wins because of our horrible bullpen and the fact that Wells hasn't had as many starts.

Fox, Wells, Marmol, Shark, Hart (traded for Grabow), Soto, Theriot, Hoffpauir, Guzman,Marshall, Zambrano, Stevens, and Fuld are just over 50% of our current 25-man roster.

While I agree that Hendry wastes $$ on role players and a few longer contracts than I would like, overall he has been successful at building a team that is in contention for the NL Central on a regular basis. Personally, I'll take Hendry over Kenny Williams. BTW, Konerko, Thome, Buerhle, Dye, Contreras, etc. have contracts that are pretty expensive and most are longer than they should be.

this is so bat [expletive] insane to me

i'm not the biggest Hendry supporter or anything, but we don't sit around during the season and think "i'm so thrilled Hendry got such fantastic players for Will Omen and Freddy Bynum, who are both bagging groceries somewhere now, i think.", but now that he parted with these guys they're blue chip prospects with enormous upside or something.

Wow. Gorzelanny will be better than Hart if he can figure it out and Grabow helps the team more than Ascancio.

OMG SAMESIES!!!! I don't know how many times I said last year that the cubs should trade Soriano, Zambrano, and Ramirez for David Eckstein, Jeff Weaver, and Yadier Molina!!!!! I don't know why no one listens to me. Keep fighting the good fight!

No kidding. Seems like built-in excuse in all honesty. The Cubs can't win a game in the post season? Crapshoot. The Cubs can't compete for an inning in the post season? Crapshoot. The Cubs can't win a WS in 100 yearS? Crapshoot.

Just the luck of the draw. No one is accountable for anything.

If you look at the Cardinals in the years preceding their WS ring, they were knocking at that door. It wasn't surprising they were capable of going to the WS after getting healthy.

NLCS in 2002, World Series in 2004, NLCS in 2005, World Series win in 2006. That's no fluke. That's consistent knocking on the door.

The real fluke was the Cubs record in 2008.
