Good to know we got Ascanio and Z an at bat but Font and Fuku are well rested after not seeing the field.

Perhaps we got too left handed?

Why let Reed face Capps,a righty, in the 9th inning instead of Fuku?

That decision made a little more sense. I think Kosuke was going to bat for either Freel or Miles in the 9th to face Capps but the freak injury changed all those plans.

Of course, Kosuke should have taken the at-bat in the 7th and Z should have already have been used in the 5th, so there were definitely still major errors made.

Let Fuku lead off and try to get on base then use Font for Miles or Freel

I can't even articulate how frustrating this is.

Especially when you take into accoun the fact that Z just came back from a baserunning injury and has been knwon to do things like break a bat over his knee. Not a smart move.

to quote myself

So in the 7th inning down two runs with two men on and a righty pitcher in and the Cubs best hitter (who is a lefty) this season on the bench, Lou used a pitcher to pinch hit. Nice.

Lou gift-wrapped the game for the Pirates by pitching Cotts with a 1-run lead. Dumb, dumb, dumb. The result was so predictable.

He didnt have much to chose from. It was either put out Ascanio, who barely escaped disaster the ining before or either Cotts, Heilman, or Patton. He had to save Guz for the 8th at the off chance we had the lead by then. Mrs. Marmol screwed us over.

I've seen enough of Cotts to know that he should never have been on this roster let alone last night's game.

We KNEW Cotts was going to screw it up. I would have taken my chances with Ascanio for another inning; at least there would have been a chance. Some chance is better than no chance.

Randy Wolf stats vs left handed hitters .093avg .329OPS . So Lou plays Fontenot at 3rd tonight, and Blanco at 2nd whos a switch hitter, yet is hitting left handed against lh pitchers. Its not like Font is some defensive genius over at 3rd, no excuse to not play Fox at 3rd and Scales at 2nd tonight.

Fox can't play 3rd base.

Either Fox, Hill, or Soriano is going to be playing the infield shortly.

well putting Fox at 3B in the 9th inning of a one run game seems like a horrible idea, not that he had much choice.

And Fontenot cant hit LH pitchers, and has terrible range at 3rd base. Give me Fox against the LH pitcher who kills left handed hitters, and take the chance with his D.

Oh ok, Fox can play 3rd in the 9th inning of a 1 run game, but he cant start the game there. I know he had no other options, but just play Fox at 3rd against leftys and live with his defense. Font cant hit leftys, and isnt a defensive wiz either, give me Fox's offense plain and simple.

fontenot is literally worthless at 3b. he is brutal

yeah. as terrified as i am of Fox at 3B, Fontenot has been pretty horrible there anyway.

He did have a choice: don't PH for Blanco. After Scales hits a HR the inning is basically starting from scratch. Why not let Blanco hit for himself and keep Blanco in a 1 run game for his defense? The Best Fox can do essentially leading off that inning is hit a game tying HR. Even if Blanco makes an out Fox is still in position to tie the game with a HR.

Why PH Fukudome and not Hoffpauir? Of the two, Hoffpauir seems more likely to hit that HR Piniella was looking for from Fox. By using Fukudome in that spot he can't PH for Reed against the RH reliever in the 9th for lack of a CF in case of extra innings.

I bet Piniella really sucks at chess because he doesn't seem to be able to think ahead at all.

Id definitely take the bad defensive 3rd baseman who can hit over the mediocre 3rd baseman who cant.

depends on how bad, how mediocre, and how much both can hit. It's certainly possible that getting bad/average defense and bad hitting from Fontenot is better for the team than horrendous D and good offense from Fox. You can make some good guesses, but it's going to be impossible to really know which is going to lead to more runs (or give up fewer runs).

BTW - I do wonder if it would be worth running Fox out there for a week or two, even if it ultimately costs us a couple runs over what Fontenot would do, simply to give AL teams a chance to see him get 20-30 ML PAs to see if he's a viable DH.

I hadn't thought about it that way, but if he could tear the cover off the ball for those PAs, he may raise his value (as a DH, of course).

It would depend on how many runs he was costing us, though.

It comes down to this: Fox might hit enough to make up for his lack of defense. If he doesn't hit- a possibility that people seem to either ignore or dismiss- then he's a huge liability. If Fontenot/ Scales don't hit they can at least be counted on to not be a huge liability defensively.

I expect to see Fox get at least 1 start at 3rd and Piniella will judge from that game whether he can take watching Fox play defense at 3rd.

In regards to his viability as a DH to an AL team, 30 MLB PAs would hardly change many minds unless he really rakes. The other thing to consider: how many AL teams need a RH DH? How many AL teams even have a full time DH anymore? I don't follow the AL very closely but it seems like a lot of teams have gone to the DH by committee approach so they can rest their starters without giving up their bats in the lineup.
