Local radio and writers are reporting that Lane Kiffin has been offered the Tennessee head coaching job.

I'm ok with this move. I wanted Mike Leach, but Kiffin is intriguing because of his upside. Apparently, he's bringing Monte Kiffin and Ed Orgeron (for recruiting) along with him.

That'd be a great choice, IMO. I wanted UK to go after him when he was the QB coach at USC and it looked like Brooks was on the outs.

I've heard opinions ranging from awesome move to way too big of a risk.

It does bother me that he's never been a collegiate head coach and it's debatable how much power he actually had in Oakland. He did a good coaching job there, though.

I think it's too big a risk for as high profile a program as Tennessee.

Beyond Leach, I don't know who else was an option. I would've looked at Dan McCarney down at UF, but I didn't really follow who UT was courting beyond Gruden, Smith, and Leach.

Brian Kelly.

Yea, I was hearing that he was the most likely guy for the past few weeks. The primary candidates from the start were Leach, Kiffin, Kelly, Jon Gruden and Butch Davis.

Someone like him or Patterson from TCU would likely be a progression candidate that would do well.

I'm usually up in the air as far as these types of candidates as they can get by with medicore recruiting classes, create a very good offensive or defensive scheme and do well in mid level conferences. To be where UT wants to go and should go given their tradition, requires both.

Monte Kiffin going to Tennessee rumor came be dubunked. I doubt Monte will be at Tennessee but Oregron is expected to be part of the staff. As for Kiffin, apparently he could be officially named the HC AFTER the Kentucky game.

As an unbiased view of the Tennesse job, I think this isn't a extremely high risk for Tennessee. This is a guy who's professionalism was called into question in the weeks leading up to his firing. If he can't handle the pressure of working for Al Davis/coaching in the NFL how well he handle having to coach against guys like Saban/Richt/Meyer/Brooks/Petino and Nutt?

I'm not saying it's not a risk worth taking, but it is a huge risk for Tennessee.

Now the Knoxville News-Sentinel is debunking that he's been offered the job.

I tend to believe the initial report, though. Jimmy Hyams (where the first report is coming from) is usually extremely reliable and the Sentinel report is coming from AD Mike Hamilton - what would you expect him to say? Hamilton almost has to refute it because he doesn't want official word out until after Fulmer's gone, though.

The only reason I think it's realistic that Monte would follow Lane is because the dad wants to see the son succeed - and what better way than having a great D-coordinator from day 1? I agree that he's the least likely piece of the coaching staff to follow, though.

And even if these reports are true that the job has been offered, you're right that an official announcement won't come until after Saturday. Monday's the earliest I think anything would come out officially.

Definitely a big risk. I wanted Mike Leach, no doubt about that, but Kiffin is an interesting hire. He's young, so he could be a longterm solution. But he's inexperienced, so he could be more hype than substance.

I wouldn't hold much against him in Oakland. That was a situation where Al Davis was going to fire him, it was just a matter of when. Kiffin was in a no-win situation nearly from the time he took the job. Working for Al Davis cannot be compared to any other job out there.

I tend to agree. Kiffin could be a great hire, or he could be awful.

You can say that about pretty much any of them except Leach, IMO.

Has Davis been mentioned? If he has, then I would put him in there with Leach as well.

Guys like Leach, Kelly, Peterson, etc would of retooled the offense to more a spread style. Lane's style of offense at USC wont be that much of difference than what they run now at UT. Lane was also the recruiting coordinator at USC, yeah i know anybody could recruit at USC but he was still in an important position. Lane may or may not have the upside as the candidates being thrown around but i think the transition will be much smoother in the short term.

Lane had pure crap to work with on the offense side of the ball and the front office at Oakland. You almost have to throw that out. Lets not call handling NFL pressure into question and then wonder if he can coach against a guy like Petrino either.

For rumors, there was a rumor i heard from a friend that Kelly if offered was going to bring his former D coordinator (Chuck Martin, now the HC) from his DII team. Thats a name that might pop up for a midlevel school this off season.

Davis was Tennessee's first choice from the time the announcement was made that Fulmer wouldn't be back.

After the first week or so he said he was staying at UNC, but he was definitely a candidate early on. And there were the ever beloved "sources" that kept saying not to discount him.

Yeah, I don't hold his Raider tenure against him in any way. And it's good to know he was the recruiting coordinator at USC, I knew he was the co-offensive coordinator but didn't realize that.

I've actually seen some rumors that Kelly would be a major candidate if Notre Dame fires Charlie Weiss this offseason. No idea about the truthiness of that, though.

It still amazes me that a team can go undefeated, be as good as it can possibly be, and still not even contend for a national championship.

Which is why it's not really a national championship.

under the most common proposals for a playoff system, Ball State still wouldn't be in it

Well there are those dumbass ones that give Troy a bid every year for winning the Sun Belt.
