Local radio and writers are reporting that Lane Kiffin has been offered the Tennessee head coaching job.

I'm ok with this move. I wanted Mike Leach, but Kiffin is intriguing because of his upside. Apparently, he's bringing Monte Kiffin and Ed Orgeron (for recruiting) along with him.

Okay, here is what I am hearing. Kiffin is a done deal. Monte is believed to be on his staff (this is HUGE). Orgeron is rumored to be on the staff, as well, though there are rumors that O is being considered for the expected opening at DC for LSU (as is John Chavis, who is also rumored to be in the mix at Arkansas). David Reaves (current QB coach at South Carolina and Lane's brother in law) is on the offensive staff (presumably as QB coach), and I'm hearing that maybe two current coaches (Scott and Drayton) are being retained. TIFWIW. We'll know Tuesday at the latest. The source has been dead-on accurate regarding player dismissals and coaching moves in the past, and has strong ties to Trooper Taylor, who *might* be in the mix on this staff as well.

What I like about this staff is that it keeps the recruiting class mostly intact. Oku will recommit, as will Giles. I think Marlon Brown signs at UT with that staff in place, and I like our chances at keeping Boyd. Defensively, you'd have to be out of your mind to not want to play for Monte Kiffin, so I think that a couple of guys who've been wavering, and have even decommitted might reconsider.

Have you heard the rumors of Kevin Steele going to UT as well?

Not under Kiffin. Monte is the first choice, and if he turns it down, I'd hope that Steele is on his list. Steele was a name closely tied to both Kelly and Leach.

I've heard (third hand) from my FSU people that Steele is not happy being at Bama and wants out. Could be an interesting offseason, to say the least ...

I want Brian Kelly for ND. He's a Catholic, did a fantastic job at Central Mich and has done a great job at Cincy. The only question is whether he could recruit to the level ND needs to recruit to compete, but I'm sure with the right staff he could make that happen.

ESPN.com's Graham Watson, who's essentially been the site's Ball State beat writer this year, speculates today that a bowl game matching up an undefeated Ball State and an undefeated Boise State is within the realm of possibility.

With both Ball State and Boise State a game away from perfect seasons, the desire to match those teams in a bowl game is growing greater.

"This is my perspective and certainly with full communication with all of our schools, but if there's an undefeated Boise nationally ranked and an undefeated Ball State nationally ranked, then I think we should talk about, can that game happen in a way that makes sense?" Mid-American Conference commissioner Rick Chryst said.

Chryst said he doesn't think the game is going to happen in Boise because of the Broncos decided home-field advantage. The Broncos are 63-3 in the past 10 seasons at Broncos Stadium, which is the second-best home record in the country.

But a place the game could end up, if several scenarios happen, is the Motor City Bowl if Ohio State goes to the BCS, or the Independence Bowl if Colorado loses to Nebraska and Auburn loses to Alabama.

That I believe is misinformed info. Does Coach Steele wants to be a HC? Yes. Is he unhappy at Alabama? Absolutely not. A site that I frequent for my Alabama talk, the moderator of the site is incredibly reliable and he has made no mention of Steele's potential unhappiness at Alabama. (Trust me if a report of Steele unhappiness is legit, he would have reported it on the site) In fact if Steele is up for a HC job, Saban will encourage Steele or anybody on his staff to go for a better job. So no whoever told you Steele is unhappy is prolly just yanking your chain.

I trust the moderator of the Tidefans over 3rd hand info anyday of the week.

suggesting that everything is not perfect at alabama : redflash :: bat signal : batman

No I didn't say everything is perfect at Alabama, because there not. There still several players that haven't bought fully into Saban's plans, it just I haven't heard any discension from the coaching ranks at Alabama. Trust me when I say this.......Tidefans is a CREDIBLE site for Alabama Crimson Tide information. The moderator of the site, "JessN" is credible. And if he says that to his knowledge that he hasn't heard Steele being unhappy at Alabama I believe him. It is common belief that Steele won't leave Alabama unless a better job or a HC job is his. Quite frankly Tennessee or Texas Tech DC jobs are not better jobs.

I just say I trust "JessN" information about the coaching staff over some 3rd hand info from Florida State.

note - if i was on my computer instead of my parents, i probably would have photoshopped the alabama logo onto the red kool-aid guy.

I come to realize that people will simply hate good teams. And Alabama is a good, soon to be great, team. And the hate on this board against Alabama will make me smile.

Careful there - this sounds oddly like what I was saying about Notre Dame two years ago. That didn't work out so hot.

The only thing Charlie Weiss and Nick Saban have in common is that they are part of the Bill Belichick coaching family. The biggest difference betwee Weiss and Saban is that not only can Saban recruit the best players, he can also coach them up to be as good of players as possible. There is no way Charlie should be this mediocre with their last yr's recruiting class and yet here there are playing for a average bowl. Not to mention with only 9 seniors graduating and I assume the minimum underclassmen leaving, Alabama should be deeper, faster, quicker, and better next yr then there are this yr. Saban has his players playing for something. Does Weiss?

You do realize the ONLY reason Steele is not at Tennessee already is because his best friend is the DC there, right? If not for Chavis, Steele would have been back at Tennessee years ago.

lol. there are probably like two people on this board who hate alabama. i really don't care much about them; i just like goofing on them at your expense. i'm not exaggerating when i say that you're the biggest homer of anybody on this board, for any team in pro or college sports.

Oh Lord... and to think that he's literally one of the more evolved Bammers out there. Trust me, I live in Birmingham, and these people are delusional.

I'll go on record as saying I'm one of the people who hates Alabama. I hate the team. I hate the university. I hate the whole state (and several of it's neighbors).

Interesting, thanks. Any idea who the offensive coordinator is? And what role would Orgeron play? I would assume recruiting coordinator, but would he leave the NFL for that and perhaps a D-line position?

it's my understanding that Orgeron would coach the DLine (no longer separate coaches for DE's and DT's) and would serve as recruiting coordinator. He's already reportedly been doing research on current commits, current players, and the state of Tennessee as a whole. He would be BIG in Memphis.

The latest on Trooper Taylor is that he's been contacted for an offensive staff position- presumably OC and most likely RB's. That would make the Offensive staff Trooper Taylor (who will share playcalling with Kiffin, undoubtedly), David Reaves (QB's), Latrell Scott (WR's... and maybe TE's) and an unnamed OL coach. Defensively (and this is all just conjecture at this point), I'm hearing/guessing Kiffin as DC and LB coach, Orgeron at DLine (and recruiting coordinator), and an unnamed DB's coach, though I have heard Joe Whitt Jr, who is another outstanding recruiter. That leaves room for a Special Teams coach on the staff, which Fulmer would never do. I have heard no names or even speculation that this might happen, but if it were to, Shane Beamer would be the unanimous choice amongst UT fans.

We will know something by Tuesday.

Alabama is pretty much insignificant to me. I think their history of cheating is pretty funny though. For an undefeated SEC team at this point in the season, they have played one of the easiest schedules the SEC has seen in many years. I would love to see them beat Florida simply because should Texas make it I would much rather face them than the Gators. However Florida is going to run all over them.

If Leach can surround himself with good recruiters he will be ok, plus he has to sell Lubbock on top of playing at Tech which is a near impossible mission. Seriously Lubbock is the worst college city in all of Texas.

Everything he has done is without great recruiting classes which also says something. Look at a school like Texas A&M that still pulls in top 20 classes, but the end result is horrible. He is also getting 4th pickings behind UT, OU, and LSU.

People know Mike Leach now, and I think we will start to see better classes. I think he would do much better at Tennessee.

And you could subsitute Leach for Rodriquez and Lubbuck for Morgantown and it would be the same story. RRod said that its a LOT easier recruiting for UM than WVU, he "doesnt need to tell kids where Ann Arbor is at" tell the story etc. With a little snake oil and a wizard hat the 2008 recruiting class had more 4* players than ALL of his years combined at WVU. Im pretty sure 2009 will break that benchmark too.

I firmly believe if you can coach AND you are at a top notch school you can recruit

Rewind.

Nick Saban the 'great recruiter' got beat out year after year against Michigan, hell this years class by Dantonio is probably one of their best. Saban leaves MSU to go to the recruit hotbed of LSU and boom he gets the recruites to come.

Urban Meyer. He comes from Utah what did he really do of any significance recruiting wise. Add to that the mass media and other fan speculation that his 'mickey mouse spread offense' wont work in the SEC; look who is laughing now.

Those are 3 examples i think of at the top of my mind.

TIME FOR A BET

if (when) bama loses to florida, redflash can't post until college football season is over. this goes for his alternate account, too.

if all of florida's players die, and they have to forfeit or something, meph can't post until the season ends.

I do too. Too bad I don't think he will be at Texas long enough to become the next head coach.

I truly have no clue to who will win the Heisman, and I won't be upset if Bradford wins it.

Very interesting. I like the looks of most of that staff. Any idea why Orgeron would leave an NFL gig (albeit small) to take a position coach job at the collegiate level? Either way, that staff can most definitely recruit very well and that's incredibly important at Tennessee.

Is it Tuesday that we should know whether UT offered and Kiffin accepted or do you think we'll know earlier and he'll assemble his staff quickly?

Thanks for the info.

I hate Alabama BECAUSE of you, not because they're good. Frankly, I was indifferent to them until I heard you spout off all your homerism crap. And as overbearing as Meph is about Florida, which has also led to a disliking of them, I actually hope the Gators kick the living crap outta Bama. Which I fully expect will happen.

Wow, the Kiffin boys and Coach O would be an absolutely top notch brain trust for Tennessee.

Outside of Pete, no one did more than Coach O to turn USC into a recruiting juggernaught. And to get Pete's mentor (as well as Dungy and Lovie's) as defensive coordinator would be huge. If you're a top notch high school defensive player how could you not want to play under Monte Kiffin? Has there ever been anyone who could play the "I can get you into the NFL" card more effectively than him in the college ranks?

Orgeron is a terrific captain but a terrible general. Quite the dumbass as a head coach, but he's damn good in other roles and certainly a coach I'd want on my team.
