Pitching market may indeed tighten up soon. Braves apparently just made Burnett an offer I don't see him turning down.

Market finally heating up with K-Rod,Wood, Sabathia and Burnett/ Lowe seemingly close to deals with the Yankees/Braves. With Hendry freeing up some more cash by trading De-Rosa does he inject himself in the Furcal Sweepstakes? Does the extra cash allow Hendry to go after Dunn? Will Hendry go after a Grudz or Eckstein to platoon with Fontento?

You guys remember that report that said we wanted to take a chance on Hermida but didn't want to just hand him over the full time starting duties? I wonder if they would consider getting both him and Bradley(if they take a Pie+pitcher deal) since they know Bradley is not going to be playing full time RF without getting hurt.

Bradley has played CF also. Might be a little insurance on Kosuke.

If we deal DeRo, we need to go after a utility IF AND a utility OF, especially if we sign Bradley. That guy is hurt more often than Mark Prior.

Wish Bruce was around...

If he's around then that means he's not busy. So maybe it's a good sign that he isn't around.

I like the way you think...

Jerry Hairston JR fits that bill rather nicely he can play the outfield and SS/2B. He really hit well last season for the Reds it might have been a fluke but for a utility guy we could do a lot worse. The way the bench shapes out will have a lot to do who platoons with Fontento.

Um... out of curiosity how long have you been a Cubs fan? :)

He did have a good year last year...but I'd rather light my pubes on fire.

I prefer going with Jeff Baker as a utility player.

Anybody sporting an ATHF avatar is a friend of mine, especially ones who want to set their own pubes on fire.

I thought the cubs were close to signing Bradley?

But if they are close to trading for someone, why not Felix Pie and pitching prospect for Hermida?

because the Marlins' asking price is higher than that

I'm assuming this is just taken from Levine's blog, but

Cubs closing in on corner outfieler through trade? 37 minutes ago

From that elismlbrumors place that's usually crap.

Hermida would be great, but I would love for the Cubs to get McLouth. Pie (replaces McLouth), Cedeno (replaces Wilson), plus 1 more prospect. Either way (Hermida or McLouth) not only helps for 2009, but also for quite a few years into the future.

They have Maybin. I doubt they want Pie.

I'm pretty sure you don't need the first sentence of those two to make the second one true.

Their initial asking price was two good pitching prospects. The DRays disengaged after balking at the initial offer, and no one has jumped in with an appropriate offer. I think they'll lower their demands, but only a little bit, and they'll end up keeping him. Florida is one of those teams that overvalues its players. Remember how they held the line on what they wanted for Pierre? They got three good pitching prospects for him.

I almost posted the exact same thing, then I noticed I initially misread the post as saying Pierre and not Pie. Pie's still not a bad prospect, but his star is definitely fading.

I think the fact that there have been so few reports so far today, either way, on Peavy could be an indication that Hendry/Towers are working on getting this finished and aren't able to leak stuff out to the press because they are busy finishing a deal, just a guess. Edited by Cubswin11

Maybe Rich Hill and Mark Pawalek are considered good pitching prospects
