9:45am: LEN3 says the Twins discussed DeRosa with the Cubs yesterday. The Cubs will present the Twins with a list of pitchers they like, which will be influenced by the Padres' preferences.

The Twins? Hmm..

I'm not surprised that more teams are interested in getting involved with DeRosa now sounding available.

This is really going to be interesting to see what all names come out of this. I just can't see Hendry doing anything more than a 4 for 1, unless we get a player in return. As of right now you have heard:

1. Pie for Olsen-flipped to Pads

2. DeRo for 1 or 2 Philly players-Flipped to Pads

3. Vitters-the rumored center piece

4. Marquis and money to someone

5. other misc. players like Cedeno, Hart, Guzman, Hill, Weurtz etc. I am keeping Marshall out because it sounds like that is what the Cubs want.

Personally I hope we only lose Pie, Marquis, Cedeno, Hart and Dero.

That seems fair to me. I think if the Cubs have to give up DeRosa to make this happen then Vitters shouldn't be included. They should make the deals with Baltimore and Philly and flip those players to SD along with Marquis (eating half the contract) and Hart and possibly Cedeno. As it is with that the Padres are getting 6 players (1 from Baltimore, 2 from Philly and 3 from the Cubs) for Peavy which seems more than fair when they have to trade him for salary relief and he has pretty much told them it has to be to the Cubs.

I liked yesterday's article about Selling high on Derosa, even though it seems like the cubs are giving up a lot, trading Derosa now is better than letting him walk away with nothing or having diminishing numbers this coming year. To me its starting to sound like it might be Vitters, Pie, Marquis, and Derosa shipping out from the cubs and then peavy coming back.

Well he wouldn't walk away for nothing. At worst we'd get a season slightly below his 2007 season, with a an adequate backup a 4 other positions and a decent value. Then when he walks away he will be at least a Type B FA, if not Type A so we'd get draft picks.

It would be nice if we could get Kubel out of this deal

I can't imagine we would lose that many players in this deal. Peavy's good, but he's not 8 players good.

Assuming that the rumors we have heard are true. The Cubs would be getting Olson from the Orioles and 2 pitchers from the Phillies for DeRosa. That would then mean that the Cubs would be trading:

Olson, Kendrick, Phillies second pitcher, Marquis, Cedeno, Hart, plus losing DeRosa and Pie just to get Peavy. How many 8 for 1's realistically happen?

My guess would be that the Padres would be happy to get the 3 pitchers from Baltimore and Philadelphia, Marquis (and cash) and Vitters.

Breaking it down to what the Cubs would actually be trading then would be:

Marquis, DeRosa, Pie, Vitters. The Padres get Marquis and Vitters along with the 3 pitchers from the other two teams. If Hendry makes this deal work by taking Vitters and Marshall out of the package, I'll be shocked.

The deals from Baltimore and Philly should lessen the amount the Cubs pay for Peavy, not keep it the same.

Kubel's bat would be great. With a chance to start everyday and a couple more years of experience, the guy could end up hitting 25 to 30 home runs. The only thing is that he is not a good fielder at all. If given a chance to play everyday, though, he may be as good as Abreu or Ibanez.

And millions cheaper.

Whats this rumor i heard yesterday that they're waiting til after the rule 5 draft to make a deal. Supposedly that the Padres need to clear room in their roster?

Some posters noted that the Rule V rosters were locked in during November.

I posted this in the CC thread but I thought I would do it here too, according to SI.com Lowe is close to signing a 4 year $66+ mil. deal with the Yankees and it could be done by tomorrow. The Phillies were rumored to want Lowe and if they miss out on him, maybe they will panic and offer to pay more of Marquis' contract or give up more/better quality players in return.

Anyone know what pick the Pads have in the Rule 5? Maybe Veal was made available for the Pads to draft. In return the Cubs could include him in the trade when he doesn't stick with the Pads 25 man roster. It allows the Cubs to open a roster spot if they new the Pads liked Veal and were likely to include him in the deal.

Does anyone know if the rumored players from Philly would go on the major league roster? If the report of Kendrick is true than I know he would. Plus Marquis, Cedeno, Hart, Guzman, Weurtz. Olsen from the Orioles.

Vitters would not.

Right now the Pads have 3 spots open on the 40 man.

I believe the Padres pick 2nd or 3rd

Veal doesn't own a roster spot on the Cubs, hence the availability through Rule 5.

I also don't see a scenario where Hart, Guzman AND Wuertz are part of this trade, unless the Cubs feel like Cedeno and Andres Blanco can pitch in relief.

Quick question, I'm having a debate with an NY fan at work. He's a Yankees fan and happy about getting CC and said CC is a better pick up than Peavy. At first i thought he migth be right but after looking past all the ESPN bias and coverage of CC, does CC even come close to the numbers Peavy has put up? I mean SOs, Ws, ERA, etc? I mean you can say the health concern can be applied to both since they're both power pitchers, i mean you may never know maybe next year CCs arm starts acting up. So putting health aside who would you rather trade for with the package the cubs have supposedly out there for Peavy, CC or Peavy? I know Peavy is a right handed pitcher but does that justify picking CC over Peavy?

Another thing and i know someone is bound to bring it up, Yeah petco is a hitters park but dont use that as your argument because its been proven wrong before.

I wouldn't use a pitcher's amount of W's as an argument in a discussion. It makes you come off like someone that has no idea what he's talking about.

But for comparison, career stats:

CC: 3.66 ERA, 1.244 WHIP, 7.6 K/9, 2.8 BB/9, 121 ERA+

Peavy: 3.25 ERA, 1.186 WHIP, 9 K/9, 2.9 BB/9, 121 ERA+

adding to that, Peavy would come at a cheaper price (money-wise). I'd take him over CC.

I am not sure which one I'd take, but I do think that CC is being wildly overrated by the media based on his NL numbers last year. Just my opinion though.

And not just regular NL, most of those games that he pitched were against the likes of the Pirates. He will definitely come back down to earth once the Yankees have him facing good teams.

I've never seen anyone make the argument that Petco is a hitter's park. But, Peavy is a better pitcher than Sabathia. And cheaper. And younger. And much less abused over the last two seasons.

It looks like the market for Marquis may be heating up. CC off the block. Lowe close to signing with the Yanks. Burnett and the Braves making progress. Who else is left? Sheets? Who knows about him. This may have been what Hendry has been waiting for. Marquis is part of that 2nd tier group that is available. Maybe he can squeeze more money out of a potential trade partner.

Even lowe level guys like Oliver Perez and Jamie Moyer are going to want close to 8-10 mil, so getting Marquis for <5 mil should be a bargain of sorts, especially for teams who arent looking for a long term commitmant and want a guy for 1 year.

*Breaking news*

Bruce Levine just broke in to the Waddle and Silvy show and said the deal is hotter then ever.

DeRo to Philly

Happ to the Cubs, then to the Fathers.

Marquis, Vitters and Hart to the Fathers

Peavy to the Cubs.

Could be done this afternoon.
