I asked Churchill what he's been hearing

Man, I got nothin. Tried to call ____ tonight but I got his voicemail at 10:40 pacific time.

When I talked to him yesterday he was more optimistic than the media portrayed, at least about Peavy, and today he was the opposite, which again is the opposite of the media's portrayal.

I'll get him tomorrow and see what's up, re: Peavy.

Sounds like the team has decided that they CAN add Peavy without trading Marquis, but that in order to add a bat in right field - Bradley, Abreu, Ibanez, in that order of preference - they'll have to shave 2/3 of Marquis' 2008 salary at least.

_____ anticpates being able to structure a contract with one of those three, to where it's more backloaded in order to fit under their self-imposed salary cap.

"We may try and work out a 2-3 year structure where his number is five or six in year one and goes up from there, and we can do something in the way of a signing bonus to help, too."

So it sounds to me like money, in the end, isn't going to stop them from adding Peavy, if they can get it done, and a solid bat.

So who could the Phillies be interested in if it isn't DeRosa or Marquis?

fontenot?

i'm surprised we haven't heard about more teams inquiring about him.

I got the impression Hendry was shooting down inquiries on him pretty quickly.

Good. This ish is so up and down back and forth that i haven't been paying too much attention to it.

Which doesn't make much sense. This is probably the best chance he has to sell high on Fontenot. 2b fetish jokes aside, I don't see why he wouldn't at least entertain offers.

So is this where the Cubs are at? Trade for Peavy and probably sign Bradley for 2/3 years.

Possible players leaving: Marquis, R. Hill, Hart, Guzman, Derosa ( Phil. ), Pie ( Balt.), Vitters , Cedeno.

Possible players just passing through Chicago : Happ ( Phil. ) and Olsen ( Balt ).

Who have I missed?

If todays anything like every other day, during the afternoon, talks will be slow with conflicting reports coming out of Vegas, in the evening, it will heat up with an imminant deal, and by morning no progress will have been made.

If you had to pick from the three, which one do you take? Ibanez,Bradley,or Abreu? I'd take Abreu's glove over the the two, but Bradley you can get for millions cheaper but the durability factor comes in..All of them have their faults and benefits..Abreu used to smash the ball at Wrigley with the Phils Carlos Lee style..If we get Peavy,I'm leaning toward Bradley but as long as we get one of the three to fill that spot after Ramirez I'll be happy.

bradley is a + half win defender

abreu is a - 1.5 win defender

in other words, bradley is $9M more valuable than abreu on defense alone and theres a decent offensive advantage for bradley as well

Any kind of fielding statistics on Bradley were probably compiled a few years ago when he was healthier and actually played some OF.

Plus... you know.... they're fielding statistics

According to UZR hes been a pretty consistent positive performer on defense

In 2007 he put up 480 innings of + a half a win OF defense

In 2006 he put up 802 innings of + 1.5 win RF defense, 125 innings of + .5 win CF defense

I highly doubt the Phils were interested in Fontenot, unless they were planning on moving him right away. Utley is only going to miss a couple weeks, at most.

They were interested in DeRosa for the same reason we all love him- his versatility. He would be their Burrell replacement in LF, and could play 3B, 2B, RF, etc..

I'd be willing to guess they'd be interested in Pie, or Reed Johnson, maybe Guzman, or even Fukudome?

Other than the part about not being able to defend consistantly without hurting himself...Bradley is probably better off in the AL...

So doea anyoen out there have an idea at this point of what the chances are that this actually happens?

Phillips said this morning on Mike and Mike that it probably won't happen during the meetings but it will likely end up happening sooner than later.

9:31am: There's word from Jim Salisbury that pitcher Kyle Kendrick could be included in this three-team trade.

I thought he was in Japan

9:45am: LEN3 says the Twins discussed DeRosa with the Cubs yesterday. The Cubs will present the Twins with a list of pitchers they like, which will be influenced by the Padres' preferences.

According to Levine on the radio it looks as though the Padres are willing to take Marquis instead of Marshall if the Cubs eat half of his salary. Supposedly, a Padres scout was asking Levine how Marquis was in the clubhouse and away from the team.

The thing I'm most worried about with trading DeRosa, is Hendry going on another 2B signing spree during the year if Font/platoon partner slump. No more Damien Jackson/Neifi Perez/Rey Rnez types please.

Maybe we can pull Todd WALKAH outta retirement :)

Now that CC and K-Rod have signed, maybe Hendry/Towers/3rd/4th team get things moving here as the rest of the FA are likely to start signing now as those two were supposed to be the table setters, and Towers/Hendry/other GM's are going to need to take care of other stuff and not want the Peavy thing to stop them from being able to sign certain guys.
