DeRo will be missed.

Which will be amazing, considering the blasting Hendry took when he signed Derosa for 3 years at $12MM.

A part of that article that I like

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Jason Marquis would replace Sean Marshall in the package going to the Padres, with the Cubs eating more than half of his $9.8 million salary. The Phillies would send two pitching prospects to the Padres while acquiring DeRosa from the Cubs.

With Harden is the rotation Marshall is very valuable. If we were giving up DeRosa AND Marshall that would have killed out versaility in pretty much every area of the game

Would be nice to see Hendry selling high with DeRosa.

Hitting .288 with 31 HRs and 159 RBIs for a combined $7.5 mil over two seasons while providing solid and consistent defense at 5 positions and being a fan favorite goes a long way towards whitewashing initial overreactions.

NSBB is definitive. Reality is often inaccurate.

11:07pm: Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune has Phillies sources saying the deal is in place if the Cubs will pull the trigger with the Padres. Sullivan also talked to chairman Crane Kenney, who implied the Cubs included Peavy's contract within projected budgets to bidders.

LAS VEGAS - While general manager Jim Hendry said he spoke to representatives of three or four free agents Tuesday on the second day of baseball's winter meetings, the Jake Peavy rumors continue to take center stage

Sully mentions the Cubs have not talked with Abreu yet but there's interest from both ends.

Bradley, Dunn,Ibanez, Johnson,Grudz are my guesses

Why is Sullivan breaking stories? I'm still waiting to hear from Bruce. When Bruce says the deal is close and I will start to get excited.

What if Bruce is busy trying to confirm these sources?

This is the 24-hour news cycle and new journalism. "Confirming" sources is an anachronism. :)

If you had to pick from the three, which one do you take? Ibanez,Bradley,or Abreu? I'd take Abreu's glove over the the two, but Bradley you can get for millions cheaper but the durability factor comes in..All of them have their faults and benefits..Abreu used to smash the ball at Wrigley with the Phils Carlos Lee style..If we get Peavy,I'm leaning toward Bradley but as long as we get one of the three to fill that spot after Ramirez I'll be happy.

True, but it seems to me that Bruce will not relay any information about the Cubs and their plans, unless he gets the info straight from the horse's mouth. None of these second hand info.

Dunn/Bradley/Abreu/Ibanez in that order for RF.

Not bad, but right now I don't see the Cubs even talking to Dunn, unless it's an offer they can't refused. The feeling I get is that Bradley is Hendry's guy for RF, and Ibanez is Lou's guy for RF. So I think you will see the Cubs continue to make a strong pitch for Bradley.

bradley is a + half win defender

abreu is a - 1.5 win defender

in other words, bradley is $9M more valuable than abreu on defense alone and theres a decent offensive advantage for bradley as well

Fukudome did save us alot in RF last year.So defense there is important. There was a lot of shallow bloopers he got a hold of and would be gappers he chased down.Bradley would be the best bet there over ageing Abreu,Ibanez and we know how Dunn is even though I don't see them going after him.

Bradley is clearly an upgrade in defense over Dunn, Abreu, and Ibanez. He also has the ability to play CF and he is a switch hitter. He provides alot of versatility. I believe one reporter mentioned the Cubs coud do a Fukudome/Johnson platoon where Fukudome plays RF and Bradley is in CF, then when Johnson plays we move Bradey over to RF.

Bradley is also probably the best all around bat at this stage too..

The negative with Bradley is his injury history and the inevitable Z bashing Bradley in the face with a bat.

if they put ibanez or abreu out there, they better increase the strikeout totals.

Abreu is a terrible defender. One of the worst in the league.

but ibanez is worse

they're pretty close...uzr has abreu a bit worse

but how many games has ibanez actually played in rf?

As long as there is an adequate back up, go with the "going to be good or going to be injured type of guy" (ala harden)...much better than a guy whos defense is going to cancel out much of his bat

That is not Bruce's style. However, Ken Rosenthal and Bruce Levine are pretty good at that game. These sources are often not second hand. They are people like Kenney, Hendry, etc that just want it to not be attributed to them.
