Seems like Pie would have to be in that outfielder deal since there's really not much else we would actually need that we could trade him for.

Agreed. However, why would Hendry trade a cheaper Pie for a more expensive Taveras? It would make zero sense, especially considering they aren't shopping for a CF.

What about a team on a limited budget, trading away an outfielder to sign a bigger name? maybe Rays and Crawford parting ways, so they could sign Dunn/Ibanez/Abreu?

Personally, I doubt that the trade will be one we're absolutely thrilled with, if it even materializes.

Mike Tirico just said something about Peavy, Chicago, very close, this afternoon, first domino now in place. Didn't catch it all.

What the hell was he talking about? Domino? The trade for a RF?

I've been one of the most vocal about keeping DeRosa, but if the deal is DeRosa, Marquis, Vitters, and Hart...you HAVE to do it. I hate losing DeRosa, but that's a fantastic deal.

Think of it this way...if WE were looking to trade Peavy from our roster, would you deal him for that package? Hell no. So...as much as I want to keep DeRo, you have to do it. Have to.

Peavy, Hermida and Furcal seems too good to be true. So it probably is.

However, with Hendry seeming to be a frontrunner for Bradley, and possibly even Abreu, you would have to imagine that whoever they trade for would have to have the potential to be as good as one of the guys they could just sign as a free agent.

Luke Scott doesn't do that. Hermida potentially does.

I'm not all that thrilled with Hendry talking to MacPhail about anybody at this point since the Cubs always seem to get royally screwed by the Orioles.

They left me hanging. I'm putting ESPN radio on here at work to see if they say anything else. All that stuff above was said, but I missed the context. And, it's Mike Tirico, who I don't know anything about any kind of insight he may or may not have. He could be parroting one of the many reports for all I know.

Outfielders to trade for could be Hermida(of course), Jason Kubel(reports were Hendry was talking to the Twins), Ryan Church, Randy Winn, Luke Scott and Mark Teahan/David DeJesus. But with so many outfield free agent still on the market I can't see him trading for a guy like Teahan this soon. Edited by cubsfan26

Possibly the Marquis situation has been solved. Its rumored that the Padres would now take Marquis in the deal with the Cubs paying 3-5 million.

What levine said exactly was:

Cubs send: Marquis (and half his contract), Vitters, Hart, DeRosa

Cubs get: Peavy

Phillies send: Happ and (Coste?)

Phillies get: DeRosa

Padres send: Peavy

Padres get: Marquis (and half his contract), Vitters, Hart, Happ, and other Phillies pitcher.

So basically it's Vitters + DeRosa for Peavy.

DeRo and Vitters for Peavy? I'll def take that.

Basically, because Marquis and Peavy's contracts are pretty damn close aren't they? Almost offsetting?

And, I know we're eating half... but we're also offloading 6mil for DeRosa.

Eating half of Marquis' contract sucks, but considering we once paid that amount to house the careers of Neifi Perez and Jose Macias...I think we can deal with it.

This year it is somewhat close...the Peavy contract is gonna hurt like hell at the backend though if he gets injured/sucks. It's backloaded like no other.

that's a steal definitely...and we still hold onto Pie and Marshall...though I'd probably want Pie and Dero and Marquis rather than Vitters...But Jim get it done!

It's the sort of deal that should remind teams not to be so eager to give out no-trade clauses, because situations change and the player then owns the trade.

Plus the only reason the Cubs will have to pay so much of his contract is because they backloaded it. So the way I look at it is the Cubs owe Marquis this money anyways. If he was making 14m between 07 and 08, instead of 11m over the last two years. We wouldn't have to pay so much of it.

Wow, Levine looks like the guy on the advertisement at the bottom of the site:

There’s still one thing I wonder about with Vitters: the Padres already have two good 3B prospects in the minors if I remember correctly. I know Vitters isn’t a highly regarded 3B, but part of me still thinks the Pie to Baltimore for arm happens and that guy goes instead of Vitters.

You guys remember that report that said we wanted to take a chance on Hermida but didn't want to just hand him over the full time starting duties? I wonder if they would consider getting both him and Bradley(if they take a Pie+pitcher deal) since they know Bradley is not going to be playing full time RF without getting hurt.
