Thankfully Lou is nothing if not patient with guys who walk people, so he should be able to get the most out of Gregg.

Yeah, unless your name is Rich Hill, Michael Wuertz, Scott Eyre, etc...

How is it that Hendry agrees to any trade proposals with the Marlins? This is the second time he's been hosed.

But he has also hosed them

Lee for Choi was a salary dump. Not sure that's the best comparison.

And Willis et. al for Alfonseca/Clement is debatable.

It doesn't matter if it was a salary dump, they still got crappy players back for a very good player.

I honestly don't think this is that bad of a deal apart from the money, why take on that salary when we're looking at Demp,Wood,Peavy. I can only think hendry has been told wood isn't coming back or SD asked for Gregg

Except Lee wasn't very good when they got him and he's only had one very good season as a Cub. He's been a not at all special first baseman for the vast majority of his career.

He better be moving Gregg. This is a waste of valuable trade bait.

An over 30 second tier reliever approaching free agency who is already making millions. ByebyeWood.

The timing of this deal tells me that something else has to be brewing.

A salary dump 28 other GMs were also able to grab. This is a stupid arguement that is always repeated.

Yeah, Wood can start negotiating with other teams soon.

He's probably been above league average at 1B in 2004, 2005 and 2007 right? Still worth it for Choi, even if he's been overpaid.

Well, we've watched the Padres toss new names out for the Braves to include in deals. The Cubs essentially took a valuable trade chip out of the equation. Unless the Padres view Gregg as a late inning bullpen guy who is cheap enough for next year.

Yeah, probably above league average 1B does not make a player very good.

It's always a bad comparison when it doesn't fit your preconceived bias.

The vast majority of trades in the MLB involve money as one of the key contributing factors. It doesn't make them illegitimate. Every other team in the MLB had a shot at Lee. Hendry is the one who got him for nothing.

Hendry is awful.

One of the worst GMs of the past fifty years.

I'm detecting sarcasm... *hopefully*

OK, forty years.

How much is Gregg making? Is it possible that this is a necessary piece to get Peavy? As in, did the Padres want a closer to replace Hoffman without having to spend a ton or give up anything more to get one?
Posted
I read some where (I think J. Mayo article) that Ceda has put on some soft weight recently. Maybe the Cubs question is work ethic and his ability to control his weight.

If Gregg doesn't get spun off somewhere else, the poor guy doesn't stand a chance around here. Think Marquis, only blowing 8th-9th innings in heartbreaking fashion rather than just pitching like [expletive] every few starts.

I couldn't imagine them wanting Gregg, maybe they are insisting on Marmol.

Ceda's always been Quevedo-esque. This is my only rationale is that they thought he was going to eat his way out of the league.

I find it extremely odd that Hoffman's 4 million dollar deal gets taken back, and then the team in the Peavy sweepstakes trade for a closer that they really don't need.

Sounds fishy to me.

It's been a big question for him for quite some time. The dude is huge.

Indeed. I am not that high on Ceda and was hoping they'd trade him this offseason but I would like to maximize his trade value.
