I can't believe it. That is really intrigueing because if Hendry does offer him a contract what if he takes it, but if he decides to move on we could get two picks.

I don't want him either, but the fact that he's a type A free agent makes you wonder if we should offer it to him so we get two draft picks. We could always just tell him that we'll sign him for way below market and buy him his ticket out of town.

And then have him accept and be stuck on the team for one more year? It isn't worth it, I don't see any teams getting to the point where they'll give that up to sign him when there are similar relievers out there.

He'd have been worth more to us as a Type B.

How so?

They'd be more willing to overspend & quicker had the consequences not potentially be a 1st round pick.

Exhibit A: Jason Kendall.

Is there a rule on how much we'd have to offer him if he accepted? Someone will sign him hoping he'll have a bounce back year, unfortunately it might be us.

I guess I don't see what's wrong with offering him arbitration and low balling him a contract to make him want to sign elsewhere.

for players ineligible for free agency its like 85% of their previous contract or something (dont remember the exact percent). I am pretty sure that still applies for free agents to be. I remember this being an issue during the Clemens stuff with the Disastros

You could always just give Howry the Todd Walker treatment.

The Padres offered him arby last year. No one took it. The Padres lost their arbitration hearing and then proceeded to send Walker packing.

It's way more likely that Howry would accept than the possibility that Walker would. Cubs would be throwing away 500K for no reason. I can't imagine the scenario in which Bob Howry turns down arbitration.

Terrible news. Somebody had a decent shot of taking a chance on him if he was a type B and they weren't going to lose any picks for him. I'd be shocked if anybody was desperate enough to lose a pick over him though.

And I believe the minimum you can offer in arbitration is 80 percent. So they'd have to offer Howry at least 3.6 million. He might get that somewhere else..if we don't offer him arbitration. If we did, he'd accept for sure because that would pretty much kill the market for him.

Exactly. He might get that from someone else if someone else doesn't have to sacrifice a 1st round draft pick to get him. If we offer him arbitration, he'd be left with no choice but to accept arbitration from us.

There's simply no way we're going to get any draft picks out of him, no matter what Hendry does. Best to just cut sling on him now and walk away.

I thought even if he was a type B that would have been worth at least a draft pick. Is that wrong? Like a sandwich pick or something.

Yes. But I believe that a sandwich pick does not cost the team a draft pick. I believe that was changed this past year.

That's why people would rather see Howry be a "B" pick rather than an "A". Teams are more willing to sign "B" players before the arby dates because it doesn't cost them any compensation.
