Jake Peavy: Trade Could Happen Soon - 11/6/2008 2:36:26 PM

Update:

Peavy could be traded by Monday to either the Cubs or Braves, ESPN-AM 1000 in Chicago is reporting.

Recommendation:

The talks have intensified on Thursday between the two teams at the baseball GMs meeting in Las Vegas. The Braves are supposedly offering several prospects while the talks with the Cubs have included the likes of pitcher Sean Marshall, outfielder Felix Pie and infielder Roger Cedeno.

Good thing we have Roger Cedeno on this team.

And anyway, if Yunel Escobar gets moved – the rumor we heard this morning was Jake Peavy for Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez and a young pitcher not named Tommy Hanson – then that means Johnson’s off the market.

LOL at this friggin geek on CSN right now all the way on the left..Sayin don't trade for Peavy.Worried about giving up our prospects..

What a nerd. He was probably saying how stupid it would be to give up our prized Bobby Hill in a trade for Aram.

Dave Kaplan also said the Cubs would only get Peavy or Dempster and not both. Which makes alot more sense, since they need to improve the offense and bullpen.

Get Peavy and let Dempster work. I'd rather use the money for offense.

Get Peavy and take the picks for Dempster.

At what point do the Braves tell themselves that they are building for a few years down the road, and not 2009? How much of the future does a team want to give up, when it is highly doubtful that they will be ready to compete with the Mets and Phillies, and maybe even the Marlins the next few years?

I don't see how that is relevant here. They are not going to give up Heyward and Peavy will still be around in 4 years.

Exactly what does getting Peavy accomplish for them? They lose a guy in Escobar who has potential to be a all-star SS for the next decade, and any prospects that they give up they lose out on developing them to be part of a competing team 3-4 years down the road. There is no way they contend this year and it's unlikely they contend they next 2 seasons.

If the Cubs can pull off a trade for Peavy, 4 months after pulling off a trade for Harden, both times after being told there was no way we had the players to get it done, it definitely goes to show you there you will always have the players needed to get it done, as long as you are willing to part.

I still think the Padres could care less about our prospects and are trying to drive up the price of the Braves offer.

Considering some of the names that have been branded about from the Braves side (Locke/Reyes/Morton, essentially any young pitcher but Tommy Hanson) are not much, if at all, better then what the Cubs are said to be offering, I say the Padres legitimately interested in some Cubs prospects. If Hendry didn't think otherwise, he would have pulled out already and focused on other targets.

They'll end up giving up a lot, plus the pads will likely expect whoever gets him to pick up at least part of the contract, and thats not something that rebuiling teams should be doing.

Whoever gets Peavy will pay the whole contract.

Monday? Guh.

I've been assuming it would be a couple weeks (closer to the winter meetings), so Monday would be sweet for me. Towers said today he expects something to get done before the meetings.

I wouldn't have a problem with Holliday going to St. Louis.

It's a deep drive, back, back, back, Holliday is at the wall, and it's a home run. Mark Mulder serves up another crushing drive with his 75 MPH fastball. Juan Pierre fist pumps as he circles the bases and the Dodgers take an 11-0 lead.

People keep saying the Braves are rebuilding and I don't know where that is coming from. Sure they are a pretty young team, but they have aging guys like Chipper, Smoltz, and Hudson (the latter will be back by midseason). The Braves had the 4th highest payroll in the NL last year, over 100Mil. They have plenty of money to spend this offseason.

The Braves' payroll has been over 85M every year since 2001. The only big salaries they have are Hudson (13M) and Chipper's 10M option. They have enough to add Peavy and a bat. That would put them back in NL East contention right away.

I thought I've heard that Smoltz will either be back in May/June, or not at all. I would think that suggests his chances of playing in ATL are slim to none.

Here is a part of article from Yahoo quoting Towers. Maybe Jimbo is working on getting a 3rd team involved to get us bullpen help or a lefthanded bat along with Peavy? Maybe be a 3 way with the Marlins including Hermida(Cubs) and Olsen(Padres).

“We’re not to the point where we’ve agreed on who the players are coming back. We just have an idea of who’s available to us and who’s not,” Towers said. “Now it’s just a matter of looking at three priority teams that are involved and trying to figure out what our optimum deal is. Some of them involve third teams and potentially fourth teams, so it becomes a little more complicated.”
