Alright, alright. I'm just saying that if Hendry pulls it off without giving up Samardzija, I'll be more pleased than if he has to include him to get it done.

Yahoo! Sports says the Padres have asked for Samardzija as the centerpiece.

No, Jim. No.

Whaaaa? We should be thrilled if Samardzija was the centerpiece of a trade. That's robbery

While it wouldn't be ideal to give Samardzija up, if he was what was stopping a trade from getting done then you have to include him. Marshall, Samardzija, Pie, Cedeno and possibly a lower level prospect would be a pretty good and fair deal IMHO. COME ON JIMBO!!! :yahoo:

Anyone with any idea what the "limited" trade clause is are the Padres one of the teams listed or not for Shark?

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm not sold on Shark. He definitely has value, but I think he's got no. 3 potential, with Marshall no. 4 potential. As far as Pie, who knows? He's put up monster stats and he has a legitimate opportunity to be a really good MLB player. But, I don't think the Cubs are sold on him so you might as well trade him while his value is still high.

Well you gotta give up something. Samardzija isn't much of a centerpiece. Please get this done!!! 1-2-3 of Peavy, Z, and Harden is just disgusting. If this is done I really, really hope Dempster is NOT brought back. That money is better spent elsewhere. Unless Marshall is also included in the deal, then I'd probably look to bring back Dempster.

Well even if it's Samardzija and Marshall we still have Gaudin, Guzman, and possibly though unlikely Hill for fill in starters. I agree just let Dempster walk take the picks, it would help weaken the blow of trading for Peavy by being able to recoup 2 extra draft picks next year. Plus if Samaradzija is included he does have a higher contract than normal and though it isn't huge it certainly helps to shave some salary and may allow for an extra sign/trade elsewhere.

That is a lot to give up. Not to say I wouldn't do it, but that is a lot.

If the Shark and Marshall are gone we'd have to keep Marquis around this year as the 5th starter and then rely on Gaudin to be the backup SP (which we all know we will need). You can't rely at all on Guzman or Hill unfortunately. I hope we can find a way to not include Marshall.

If Shark is the final piece to the deal, the Cubs need to pull the trigger. There is no reason why Shark should be holding up the trade. I'm sure Shark would be properly motivated (ie $$$ or a guarantee spot in the rotation) to waive his NTC.

No doubt it's a lot but you have to give up a lot to get a lot, Peavy is a stud top 5 pitcher in all of baseball and we have him under contract well below market value for 5 years.

By the way, I'd like to see Marshall end up getting a shot at starting a full year at Petco. I think he could do some really good things there.

I agree I think he could win 12-15 games pitching half his games there.

With that offense, or lack of offense, I'm not sure about that. Maybe 12. But wins don't mean anything...he'd likely give up a relatively small amount of runs pitching half his games there. He's a very good pitcher even without that park.

While it's always important to have good options for backup starters it shouldn't hold Jim back to give up both Marshall and Samardzija if that is what it is going to take. I think we can/could rely on Guzman if needed to start a few games along with Gaudin. Marquis would need to stay as you said and that is fine he is a above aver 5th starter.

I'm not saying I wouldn't do it. Hell I'd give them Marshall, Samardzija, Guzman and Gaudin. I'm just saying that there are big health concerns with our starting rotation and if we could give up prospects like Ceda, Veal, and Hart (I don't know why they even appear to be interested in him) along with Pie and Samardzija, then I'd much rather do that.

I meant it more along the lines he would pitch like a 12-15 win pitcher there, it's unlikely he actually gets there, Peavy only won what 10-11 games last year, so it's pretty obvious Marshall likely couldn't win 15 next year but he could post a good numbers but not get the wins to back those numbers up.

I'd have no problem trading Samardzija away, but I'm curious as to whether he'd waive his NTC.

Depending on what Shark wants in terms of what role he wants to play with a team next year, he'd be much more likely to get that role (i.e. be a ML starter) with the Padres than the Cubs. If the Padres really want him, I wouldn't be surprised if they promise him a spot in the rotation or at least give him a serious shot at one if he waives his NTC.

And I'd also have no issues with trading Shark. If he's the guy it takes to get Peavy, well, good luck in San Diego, Shark.

The article says that sources insist the no trade clause is "limited".

How limited, exactly?

This would be perfect with me! The Cubs actually selling high on a guy? Never thought I would see the day.

I'd be fine giving up Jeff Samardzija if it got us Jake Peavy. Samardzija could end up being a solid number 2 starter one day or stud closer. But he's probably never going to be Jake Peavy, and I think he's replaceable out of the bullpen. I just hope we don't work out a deal for Peavy and Samardzija blocks the deal using his no-trade.
