The Braves had a window of exclusivity to hammer out a Peavy trade, but that has apparently passed. The Padres like the Cubs' young pitching, even if it doesn't match Atlanta's.

Im curious abou the Cubs young pitching. Mashall? Ceda? Atkins? Papelbon? Would it cause a massive NSBB uproar if Jay Jackson was involved?

No, not even close. It can involve any pitcher not named Marmol and there will be no uproar.

Jackson can't be traded til June.

If I'm not mistaken, he could be a PTBNL if the Padres are willing to accept that, and if the Cubs are willing to include him.

But they could theortically get around the rule by something like a normal deal for Peavy (the pieces we've heard so far) and no PTBNL, then say around January 30th or so (provided they haven't traded him yet) trade 2 minor league players to be named later (with one of them expected to be Jay Jackson) to the Padres for Khalil Greene. Make the trade for Greene in late January (if Greene is still available) you then have the 6 months to conclude the trade, which would coincide with Jackson being available to trade by June 26th (which according to cubs.com is when he signed).

Trade one: Peavy for Marshall/Theriot/Pie/Ceda

Trade two on late Jan/Early Feb: Greene to the Cubs for Jackson/prospect (who both will officially announced in June).

That way the Padres could get prospect(s) they like who are not available now, indirectly for Peavy. Again I said theoritically. Don't know how ethical it would be to circumvent the rules like that.

Not exactly a newsflash, but Fox Sports Report just mentioned simply:

"The Chicago CUBS are closing in on a trade for Jake Peavy."

I love how Fred always capitalizes every letter in "CUBS."

I'm way late to the game, so this has probably already been covered, but what about the difference between Peavy's road/home splits? How much has Petco helped him out?

It took him a while to stop referring to them as "ORPHANS", the name he knew them by in his childhood. ;)

I kid, Fred. I kid.

Over his career he's about 1 ER better at home, 2.77 ERA/3.8 ERA, I couldn't find his home/away ERA+. He had horrible splits this past year, but 2 or the last 3 his home/away number were almost identical. In 05 and 07 the difference was less than .2. While his numbers will be a little worse at Wrigley than Petco, it shouldn't be to extreme of an increase once he's used to pitching there, if he's acquired.

Edit: His HR numbers are obviously skewed, but his WHIP hasn't shown a big difference, over his career. This year, his WHIP was vastly better at home, and he did have a big HR difference, 4 in 98IP at home, 13 in 75IP on the road. This year was his biggest home/road splits of his career.

Closing in makes it sound imminent.

No deal is imminent, but De Luca wonders if pitchers Sean Marshall, Rich Harden, or Jeff Samardzija could be involved. Samardzija has a no-trade clause.

If Shark didn't have a no-trade clause I'd gladly trade him.

Here's the actual DeLuca article.

DANA POINT, Calif. — With the Atlanta Braves balking at the demands from the San Diego Padres, the Cubs have stepped up their pursuit of ace pitcher Jake Peavy, sources confirmed this morning.

A big reason for the uptick in interest is the latest contract demands from free-agent pitcher Ryan Dempster.

A source close to general manager Jim Hendry said he is ‘‘very interested’’ in Peavy. Hendry spoke with Padres general manager Kevin Towers on Wednesday, and the Padres’ braintrust met for dinner Wednesday night at a local Mexican restaurant to discuss the Cubs players potentially involved in the deal.

No trade is imminent, sources said.

The Cubs had entered the general managers meetings with interest in Peavy, but with the belief the Braves were the runaway favorites. They also stepped up their interest in Peavy after initial talks with Dempster revealed the All-Star is seeking a five-year, $75 million contract, a source said.

A Padres insider indicated Peavy will be dealt this offseason and said the club isn’t looking ‘‘for a home run, but at least a double’’ in terms of the talent it would receive in return for the former Cy Young Award winner.

The Cubs also have interest in free-agent left-hander CC Sabathia and right-hander A.J. Burnett.

Their 2009 rotation includes four pitchers already under contract: Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, Harden and Jason Marquis.

Dana Point is about an hour from me (and about an hour from BBB).

I have a feeling all this rumored interest is a negotiating ploy for Dempster first, and a fallback option second.

That's what I was thinking in the Dempster thread. But I truly hope not.

Rosenthal: Cubs Want Peavy And Dempster

By Cork Gaines [November 6 at 12:12pm CST]

Ken Rosenthal is working overtime today with his second column. This time Rosenthal reports that the Cubs are willing to give Ryan Dempster a four-year deal even if they land Jake Peavy from the Padres.

The club also is willing to give Dempster a four-year contract, sources say, a decision that should put them in good position to retain the free-agent right-hander.

Even though the Cubs are for sale, team officials apparently believe that they can absorb the four years and $63 million remaining on Peavy's contract while committing at least $50 million to Dempster over the same term.

Rosenthal notes the close relationship between Dempster and Jim Hendry could keep Dempster from accepting a longer or more lucrative deal with another team.

However, Rosenthal notes there would likely be a ripple effect on the roster if the Cubs were to resign Dempster and trade for Peavy.

The Cubs would likely be unable to resign Kerry Wood.

Several players may have to be traded to reduce payroll, including Jason Marquis.

May have to opt for a cheaper left-handed hitting outfielder than originally thought.

Ugh, let Dempster go and collect those picks. Wood is more important esp if you already have Peavy on board.

I tend to agree with you, but hasn't the mindset been that bullpen performance is flukish by nature and that it's not smart to commit a whole lot of money to it anyway?

Is our love for Woody clouding judgment?

I think the biggest negative of losing Wood would be the fact that we'd lose Marmol in the highest leverage spots. Could the Cubs be smart enough not to just move him to the closer spot?

I disagree. In a person neutral setting I'd take Demp over Wood. Contracts ignored. Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden are liable to miss a combined 20 starts or so. I wish i was exaggerating, but I am not. Jason Marquis, while crap, is useful as a safety blanket if Zambrano or Harden go down. If we acquire Peavy and deal away Marshall, which is inevitable in such a trade, then we no longer have the safety blanket. If we acquire Peavy and sign Dempster and retain Marquis, we do have one, a pretty damn good one too.

I also think its a negotiating ploy for the Braves to step up their offer of Peavy. Sounds like something a couple of guys might concoct up on the golf course after a few bloody marys...

Yes. Peavy, Z, Harden, Lilly, Marquis/Samardzija/ME is still the best rotation in baseball. Wood would be essential in the pen as money wouldn't be there to upgrade otherwise.
