Just wondering if it would be ok for me to start a Illinois-Mizzou thread by itself? We have lots of fans of both teams, and just thought it would be easier and such. I wont start it till I get an Ok from a mod though

This thread is fine.

Boo you suck! Just kidding, but I was just trying to eliminate all the people complaining about the banter that is going to happen back and forth the next week. Last year it seemed like there was alot of complaining about all of it. No big deal, but with that said...

It's when Big Ten season actually starts that we'll really get sick of you people.

for what it's worth, chicago is the very beating heart of the big ten.

Missouri fans LOVE to say Mcgee is a better QB than Williams based off how he played against them last year. I just don't get it, he's not as good as Williams. Juice really came on following the loss at Iowa, and I think he is poised for a big year.

Gonna be an interesting game. I like the rivalry, but we need to lose the "neutral" site aspect of it. If your gonna do it, play it on the schools home fields. I can't wait to see how some of the youngsters play in this game. Martez Wilson is such an athletic freak, I can't wait to see what he does at OLB. Vontae begins his campaign to enter the top 15 in the draft next season, and our deepest WR core in recent memory has another year of experience and a couple new comers who will be looking to make immediate impacts. Its finally exciting to be an Illini football fan.

Man I couldn't agree more. Same thing with the Mizzou-kU rivalry game in Arrowhead. The home environment is a big part of why I love college football so much. I hate that they're playing in a freakin dome.

I wouldn't say Chicago is the beating heart of the Big Ten. I'm not sure any town really is but if I had to choose I would go with Indy over Chicago anyways. Both cities host championship tournaments every year and both are centrally located but just from my own experience of being in both cities quite often 99% of people in Indy grew up with the Big Ten and root for a Big Ten team where as Chicago it's about 50/50 as many tend to only care about pro sports and many come to Chicago for the job but grew up outside the Midwest.

Yeah, nevermind that Chicago's like 5 times the size of Indy.

And nevermind the fact that half the board is not from Chicago.

So you're saying that half(it's gotta be more than that) of the board are Big 10 guys, and the other half are scattered among the other big time conferences. Yeah, let's raise hell that people talk too much about their teams rather than discussing the finer points of Knoxville's latest suspensions.

Size doesn't matter in this arguement. All that matters is what city has a very high concentration of Big Ten fans, is centrally located, and has a rather diverse fan base of teams (i.e. cities like Columbus and Ann Arbor are 99.9% fans of one team).

Indy has more Iu fans than anything else but Purdue is close and Illinois is pretty close to Purdue. IU and Purdue are an hour away while Illinois is a little under 2 hours away. Northwestern is the only school within 3 hours of Chicago (at least I think). But like I said I really don't think there is any one city that is the beating heart of the Big Ten.

There was an article in the Trib recently about possibly moving the game to a home and home situation after 2010.

Say what you will, but the atmosphere at Arrowhead last year was ridiculous. I don't think that would've been matched at Faurot or in Lawrence.

With an identical scenario in terms of what was at stake, you don't think the atmosphere would've been better had that game been at Faurot? Granted I wasn't at Arrowhead so I only know what I saw/heard on TV, but I'd be shocked if the atmosphere at a neutral site would be better than at your home field.

Won't be an easy game for the Illini. Are there any other Big10 teams starting off with a quality non-conf opponent? I know the Badgers are taking on the mighty Akron.

Quick check....looks like MSU is taking on Cal, that's pretty much it.

Nope it wont be an easy game for the Illini, but it also wont be an easy game for Mizzou. I really wish this game was the 3rd game of the year instead of the 1st. I think it would give us a better idea of what to expect from both teams.

Me too. This team may have a touch less experience, but is definitely more talented than last year's bunch. I'm excited to see Martez Wilson play every down and the Vontae/Macklin match-up should be a lot of fun. Our schedule is very difficult this year (Mizzou, road games at Penn State, Wisky, and Michigan), but there really isn't any game that I feel we can't win this year (note: I'm not predicting an undefeated season).

Ya I cant wait for the rest of the country to learn who Martez Wilson is. I keep hearing about how much of a loss Leman is, and it needs to stop. Wilson is a monster. I think the key to this season is on how much Juice has matured, and whether or not we have a back step up and take over the #1 running back spot. We have the talent there, its just a matter of who wants it. And yes, our schedule isnt going to be easy.

i would wager that chicago, easily, has the most big ten college alumni living in or around it. plus, it's the midwest's media capital and is centrally located.

does it attract fans of other conferences or from other areas? of course, but that's because it's a gigantic, world class city, which can hardly be held against it.

as far as half the board not being from chicago, who cares? doesn't matter. the team is based in chicago and many of us are from illinois and are going to talk about the big ten. i'm not saying that the big ten should be the main discussion or even one of the more prevalent discussions regarding college sports, but you absolutely cannot be suprised when you come to a chicago cubs board and see a big ten discussion, that's ignorant.

that's like that white sox fan who always calls up wgn radio and tells them they suck because they talk about the cubs too much.

In addition to being right next door to Northwestern, 2 hours to Champaign and Purdue. 2 and a half to Madison. Decent sized fanbases from EVERY school. (Minnesota possibly the only exception, but guarantee there's 10 times the Gopher alums in Chicago than are in Indy) The fact that Indy gets to split up the 2 suckhole Indiana universities doesn't make it much other than the hub of Indiana literacy.

I don't know. I think the thing that made it so great is that it was 50/50 Mizzou and Kansas fans. It would've been crazy at Faurot, for sure, but I think the fact that it was such an even split in fandom made the atmosphere that much better.

That's not to say I wouldn't mind going back to playing at our stadium and in Lawrence though.

anyone else cheering for Utah to beat Michigan?

You poor Penn State fans, always with the little guy syndrome. It's okay, Penn State will be good one of these years.

I agree that Chicago isnt the beating heart of the Big Ten, However within 3 hrs of Chicago are N'western, Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue.....Close to the 3 hr range Michigan, MSU, Iowa, and Indiana....Minnesota and OSU are probably under 6. That is 10 of 11.

I think the team that wins the PSU/Mich game will have 1 more win. Since there is about as much mystery in the winner of that game as there is in the OSU/Michigan game, I will take that wager
