I am pretty excited about Michigan St. I think we are going to be surprisingly good. I dont know if beating Cal would be an upset this year, but it would be a great start to the season.

i am going to predict that michigan state does what they always do, start out good, lose a game to a good team that they should've won, then go in the toilet.

They did lose overtime games to Iowa and N'western last year(bad). However they played Michigan, OSU and Wisconsin very close and closed out the season beating Purdue and Penn St to make a bowl game. They were heavy underdogs against Boston College and played them close. So I dont think they kept the same pattern that they had done under Smith. They rallied to make a very respectable season.

Well back to somewhat on topic I am glad I will have 8 channels for college football this year (ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, NBC, CBS, 3 BTN's).

FSN/Comcast/Whatever shows PAC 10 football. Does TBS still show the occassional game?

Comcast Sportsnet is showing a fair amount of football this year, I think TBS still has a game (usually Big 12 if I'm not mistaken) once a week, and Versus airs some Pac-10 football too.

Actually, Versus primarily airs Mountain West games but last year added a few Big XII and Pac-10 games (most memorably, the Stanford-USC game).

I think that phase is over for them since they got rid of John L. Smith.

So you're saying...the coaches were screwing it up?

Dantonio is one grumpy SOB but he is such a better coach than John L its not even funny. I couldnt remember who they played in the bowl til you said BC but i remember them playing very well in that game. I look for MSU to improve even furter this year, if they dont id be surprised.

this would be an interesting debate ... which school should get the copyright on starting out great losing a game they should win and then tanking; Purdue or MSU.

purdue starts out great because they play lousy teams out of conference and always seem to get one or two big ten cream puffs early on too. so they're like 5-0 or 5-1 and people think they're good, then they start playing teams that are more talented than them - usually michigan, ohio state, penn state, wisconsin - and start losing. for quite a while, purdue is pretty much what penn state has been the last couple of years - they win the games they're supposed to win, and they lose the ones they're supposed to lose.

except for that one game that Penn State should have lost but a betting ref decided he needed to let them win ... no I will never let this die I watched the game and said at the time one of the ref's must have bet on the game. Seriously how do you run the clock when someone ctahces the ball and walks out of bounds with no one within 10 yards of him.

kinda hard to say penn state "should have lost" when purdue needed 10 points in just over 2 minutes to even tie the game. would it have given purdue a better chance to send the game to overtime? yes, but even then purdue can still lose the game. so the blown call probably didn't affect the outcome of the game.

except for when you take into account that replays show Jaycen Taylor crossed the goal line in the first quarter before the ball was taken from him and the holding call in the 3rd that took back a touchdown and Purdue would have to settle for a FG which both announcers said they couldn't see it.

not to mention that trying to get PSU fans to sympathize with blown ref calls is barking up the wrong tree

Yo, doobie-doobie-dew...

Just saw that Brandon Warren won his appeal. Tennessee's offense just got much more potent.

Awesome, awesome news! I love Warren's ability and he'll definitely help our offense out. I'm drooling just thinking about him and Aaron Douglas on the field at the same time soon.

I think you guys are missing the core fact here. They are Big Ten refs and they suck. Every school has suffered their wrath at least once. The Big Ten needs to implement a system to better monitor the refs because officiating in both major sports has been a travesty for the last decade at least.

fearless week 1 prediction...

wait for it...

Iowa will beat Maine in ugly fashion and all of the old farmers will say "maybe this team ain't so bad". in all honesty, I have no idea where to put this team. I think most have picked them around 7th in the Big Ten, but with a solid running game they could easily crack the top tier. I'm a big fan of the Shonn Greene and want a big season from him

That might be a long wait. Douglas still has not practiced with full contact, and if Cottam is able to get healthy, Aaron would at best be a 4th stringer. I'd imagine a redshirt this year, so maybe next year or Warren's Sr year, but I doubt it happens this year at all.

Still, great news for UT.

Yeah, soon was a bad word. I figured Douglas would redshirt this year (especially with Warren in the fold) and was thinking forward to next year.

A Warren/Cottam duo would be really nice, though.
