anyone else cheering for Utah to beat Michigan?

You poor Penn State fans, always with the little guy syndrome. It's okay, Penn State will be good one of these years.

I'd wager a bet that PSU wins more games than UM this year.

I think the team that wins the PSU/Mich game will have 1 more win. Since there is about as much mystery in the winner of that game as there is in the OSU/Michigan game, I will take that wager

I don't have much confidence in either team to be honest

I think they both will be 8-4/7-5...so I would agree with you

I'd rather Notre Dame beat Michigan. The whole 'bad team beats Michigan' thing was fun last year until Michigan turned around and handed us the most depressing beating in the history of football.

Well, neither was Appalachian State, but often perception is more real than reality.

I won't shed any tears for Michigan if they lose, obviously. But more than anything, I want to beat those guys. If they lose to Utah then crush us again (at a game I'll be at), it means nothing to me that they lost to Utah.

Re: Neutral site games, I read that U of I's AD(is it still Guenther?) wants out of the Mizzou game, or at the very least wants it out of St. Louis and continuing as a home and home. Not sure how true that is, but there it is.

Also, Mizzou-kansas may not stay at Arrowhead. Iowa State and Kansas State recently signed a deal to play at Arrowhead starting next year(the JUCO bowl, as it were). That may not be the same week, but it might be an indication that neither Mizzou or kansas have an interest in keeping the neutral site.

Yeah, nevermind that Chicago's like 5 times the size of Indy.

Size doesn't matter in this arguement. All that matters is what city has a very high concentration of Big Ten fans, is centrally located, and has a rather diverse fan base of teams (i.e. cities like Columbus and Ann Arbor are 99.9% fans of one team).

Indy has more Iu fans than anything else but Purdue is close and Illinois is pretty close to Purdue. IU and Purdue are an hour away while Illinois is a little under 2 hours away. Northwestern is the only school within 3 hours of Chicago (at least I think). But like I said I really don't think there is any one city that is the beating heart of the Big Ten.

I agree that Chicago isnt the beating heart of the Big Ten, However within 3 hrs of Chicago are N'western, Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue.....Close to the 3 hr range Michigan, MSU, Iowa, and Indiana....Minnesota and OSU are probably under 6. That is 10 of 11.

Well this isn't really on topic but there's not much to talk about yet anyways. I got curious after your post as to which city actually is closest when adding all the mileage together per Google Maps. Well Chicago is actually closer when you add the the mileage together (2695-2975).

Raisin,

If you get a chance, could you give me a quick rundown of UCLA? Basically strengths, weaknesses and players to watch.

I've got a pretty good idea, but figured I'd turn to the expert on the matter to know for sure. :D

Weaknesses: Offense, secondary (except for Verner).

Strengths: Front 7, kicking game.

Players to watch: Defensive tackles Brian Price (Tennessee will have to double team him) and Brigham Harwell, middle linebackers Reggie Carter and cornerback Alterraun Verner. If the OL gives them anything, the top 3 running backs are very talented (Kahlil Bell, Raymond Carter and Aundre Dean).

The offensive line is awful. Inexperienced, full of positional converts and injuries and the depth is so poor there are only 3 backups for the whole line. UCLA is already on the 3rd string QB and it sounds like the only reason he's starting is because he's older and more experienced...i.e. he's not that talented.

I'd be ecstatic with 4 or 5 wins this season.

You're a great man Raisin!

I knew you had a stud DB, but wasn't sure who. I didn't, though, know your DTs were great - that'll be interesting to see how the UT O-line handles them.

Is the starting QB a JUCO? I heard some random UCLA fan on the radio talking about how he was very talented, but I suspected he was full of crap.

Indeed, he's a JUCO transfer by the name of Kevin Craft. Started a couple games as a freshman at San Diego State, transferred to Mt. San Antonio College (JUCO in suburban LA) and ended up at UCLA this season. He's sounded very inconsistent and only beat out two freshmen due to experience.

Sophomore DT Brian Price is likely a future first rounder and the only recruit UCLA has ever beaten Pete Carroll to. He was being doubled teamed in the second half of his first collegiate game last year.

Interesting. I heard Craft put up some impressive numbers either at SDSU or Mt. San Antonio College, of course opposition's talent level must be factored in.

As for Price, it'll be an interesting matchup inside. Tennessee's strength this year on the line (the whole thing is good) will be the inside with guards Jacques McClendon and Vlad Richard (both are a couple of the strongest players ever at UT) and center Josh McNeil. Should be a fun facet inside the game to watch.

I have no expectations on how Michigan will finish this year. Everything is going to change offensively as well as defensively. I dont know how i could accurately expect anything from this team without seeing a few games before the B10 season starts. They have a lot of talent but predicting how they will mold to the new schemes is fruitless without seeing them in action first.

I wont be surprised if they lose to Utah this weekend. Im really interested to see how they look though.

Unfortunately for Iowa fans we won't find out anything about this team until at least September 13th. Still talk that Rick Stanzi is neck and neck with Christensen but we'll see.

O-line and QB play will be the key but you can't learn much against Maine and FIU at home. Still exciting to get the season started and there will be a few good matchups on Saturday.

Football is going to be a huge letdown this year after the pennant race.

Did you consider, at all, saying that the entire team was the weakness and that there were no strengths?

When 5 of the sophomores - seniors on this team have a chance to ever be drafted and only one of them on day one, yes.

I'll be in Ruston to watch LA Tech and Miss. St. It will be the first time Tech has ever had an SEC team come to Ruston.

Two days until Ball State football starts. I can't believe I'm saying that I'm jacked up for a Ball State football season.

NCCubFan, dougdescenzo, photoguy, if you make it into this thread and are interested in listening to the game, WCRD.net (the student radio station I worked for until May) does free webcasts.
