When an ump calls infield fly, the ball is deemed caught. If you are on base, treat it as if it were a fly out. Doesn't matter if the fielder lets it fall or not.

Not true. Baserunners advance at their own risk and the ball is only considered caught if it is actually caught.

what? If it isn't caught you can't force the batter at any base, thus you can't turn two off of it.

That is correct, but the ball isn't considered caught if it is dropped. The batter is still out, but not on a "caught" ball.

It is still scored as a put out by the fielder closest to the batted ball, whether he catches it or not. Same as a fly out.

He's been really good when he's only been playing 3-4 times a week. It may sacrifice some scoring in the short run, but playing him sparingly could pay off in September and October.

The runners aren't forced to run, but you can still get a double (or triple) play off of it if you let it drop and the runners try to tag up.

A source told MLB.com that the Rays will get Jason Bay from the Pirates for Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann.

Well that will make this weekend more pleasurable. Jimmy ballgame you are out of my doghouse and i've now allowed you to sit on the garden furniture, that doesn't mean your coming in for cakes and tea though, you'll have to continue to win me over for the next 2 months!!

I have never been happier to be wrong. I HATED the Edmonds signing. Hated it. I wanted Pie to play CF and even if he got hurt, I didn't want Edmonds near this team because it looked like he had absolutely nothing left.

I was wrong.

If the ball hits the ground, the runners still don't have to advance. They can, but the don't have to.

It's a very good trade for the Rays if true. Brignac is one of the game's top infield prospects, but the Rays were able avoid surrendering a second top-notch talent for a player they'd have under control at a very modest price through the end of 2009. If the Pirates trade Bay without getting an outfielder, they could call up Nyjer Morgan to help out. Andrew McCutchen is another possibility, but there's little reason to think he's ready. I was just checking on WSI..Theres a topic on this..

ESPN 890 in Boston which is a second fiddle to powerhouse WEEI is reporting that with the Marlins deal dead Theo has offered Manny to the White Sox for Ken Griffey and would pay the 7 million left on Manny's contract.

That's why I said "the runners aren't forced to run."

When I played softball I used to intentionally drop the ball on an IF fly rule to see if the runners would get confused and think they had to run.

I also got very frustrated when someone would say "But, it's a low risk signing...they are only paying him a pro-rated portion of the minimum salary, there's nothing to lose..."

Well, for the Red Sox it isn't.

The Griffey to the White Sox wasn't a good trade. This is way worse.

That's what I meant. I don't know why you would exchange Griffey for Manny at this point.

I agree man, I thought he was completely tapped out.

The scouts must have seen something we missed, they did say they changed his stance back to the wider one right?

If you're dead set on getting rid of Manny it's not awful.
