• Now that Jeff Samardzija looks as if he can be to the Cubs what K-Rod was to the 2002 Angels and what Joba Chamberlain was to the Yankees last year, the Cubs are no longer shopping for arms of any kind. According to clubs that have spoken with them, the only commodity the Cubs are still asking about is left-handed-hitting center fielders. But that's a need they're more likely to fill in the offseason than in the next three days.

Hopefully they fill it with Pie.

As it turns out, with the offense they have, they could have left him in there to adjust. Now all this has done is push back everything.

If they don't plan on Pie being in the picture let's all hope they get good value when they trade him.

If you can beat Murton's value to a pulp, but still trade he, EPatt, and Gallagher for Harden and Gaudin, there's got to be somebody out there who can look past the Cubs bungling of Pie's "chance" in the majors and give some value for him. How much value we'll likely see this off-season.

Glad to hear they are still thinking about bats, and may have decided it is not worth overpaying for another veteran reliever. Not sure why it has to be limited to LH hitting CF, but, that's Hendry. My guess is they won't be able to find anything worth going after, but the fact remains that CF is still relatively unsettled. Johnson and Edmonds have been the walking wounded all year. And although his overall numbers with the Cubs have been outstanding, Edmonds has begun to show signs that he won't be doing that the rest of the year. His June was insane. But while his July has been solid, the br.com split for past 28 days is nothing special (780 OPS). The discrepency, I assume, is the 0-5 on June 30. He's banged up now, and there's no way of knowing what he'll do the next two months.

While the platoon between Reed and Edmonds looks great on paper, their health and contract situations leaves their status in doubt for the near and long-term. It's better to be proactive about these situations than merely accepting the status quo because it's worked so far.

I hope they haven't closed their eyes to SS options though. While Theriot's been fine there, I don't trust his batting average dependent "averageness" (100 OPS) for the long haul.

I'm GRCubsFan and I approve this message. Totally agreed.

Marquis for Sizemore?

Sounds good. What about Howry for Beltran?

instead of or in addition to?

Good question. If you can get them both, you take them, and spin Beltran back to the Mets for Reyes.

i don't know why they choose joba as a comparison when jenks is probably a better comparison, considering like the angels in '02, the white sox won in '05

actually nevermind, i do know why they choose joba to compare, its espn.

I still would have liked a lefty out of the pen. And I don't necessarily think that Samardzija is the answer yet. He does have nasty stuff but he is far from a polished pitcher. How do we rank with the other contenders in terms of lefty options out of the pen?

Cotts toiled away in Iowa last year on a demotion, and Lou is scared to even use Eyre.

If the Mets don't win it this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see them shop Beltran. Unfortunately, the asking price would be slightly higher than Howry.

In the grand scheme of left handed/switch hitting CF, heres a list of guys that would be available now or in the offseason and don't terribly suck (ie Pods, Patterson, Bourn, etc):

Carlos Beltran

Nick Swisher

Ryan Sweeney

Mark Kotsay

Jody Gerut

Nate McLouth

Coco Crisp

Melky Cabrera

Kenny Lofton

Outside of those top two, not a very inspiring list. And those top two are probably the least available.

Of course we already have a lefty CF...hes just playing RF.

I truly hope you don't think I was serious.

Why don't we just call McClouth up. He has proved he is ready.

Agreed. We should send down Eyre and throw in the extra cash.

We've got one playing CF too.

Buster Olney said on "Mike and Mike" this morning the reason for the Joba's comparasion, is simply because of the electricity that each pitcher (Shark/Joba) brought to their resepctive teams.

I've actually been pleased with Cotts' performance so far this year. Pluse he has that all important World Series experience to boot!
