funny that O'Sullivan(who looks pretty good) was cut in favor of Chris Leak...while I don't know if O'Sullivan is going to amount to anything....everyone and their Grandma new Chris Leak had no future in the NFL..really they amaze me at times.

I'm not sure which is more sad. O'Sullivan starting for the 49ers, or O'Sullivan moving the ball and throwing a touchdown on our first-string defense.

How much rope does Angelo get after '06?

He would've likely been fired had the Bears not been to the SB, how long does that last?

the bears have a great core of players. what sucks is that none of them are offensive players, unless you count hester.

I think this year may be it. I'll keep hoping and cheering, but I'm thinking 6-10 to 8-8 (at best).

Their time has passed though. This one was once a great core on the defensive side, now it's a declining core of players.

I'd rather see them win w/Angelo, but with the way these drafts have unfolded.... I don't see it.

i would argue that only urlacher is declining, 2 if you count brown. the others are in their prime.

Harris hasn't been the same either and very shortly both DEs will start to regress.

You know the scenes early in Major League where the various Indians fans are talking about how badly their team is going to suck? We're there.

I can't wait until Angelo is gone. He simply cannot form a professional offense.

He isn't the only problem. The offensive coaches are well.......offensive. I still maintain there is some offensive potential (Bradley/Olsen/Forte) but the coaches don't put those talents in position to succeed.

Even if this team is putrid this season, they'll just fire the coordinators, churn out some excuses involving injuries and playing in a difficult division, make a number of questionable draft picks that pan out on defense but are horrible on offense, and try hyping everyone up for the 2009 team.

I think the McCaskeys are too cheap to fire Angelo and Lovie while they're both in the middle of long contracts. Angelo's under contract through 2013 and Lovie's under contract through 2011. Unless this team puts together two terrible back to back seasons (think 2-14), neither of those guys will be going anywhere any time soon.

Agreed. Decline starts way, way earlier in football than people think.

I think it is time we think about the possible decline of some of our players on defense.

Still though, as frustrating as it was to sit through that performance tonight, I still want to wait for the regular season before I make any declarations. The 49ers scored a lot of points on Green Bay last week too. I find it highly unlikely that's because GB's D will suck too. More likely, it's at least partially because the 49ers are a team under a great deal of pressure this season to turn it around, and they're very eager to show everyone they are doing so, even in the preseason. GB thinks they know what they have on D, and so do we. You didn't see our best packages or best performances tonight. I gotta believe that until I see otherwise in the reg. season.

Orton had some nice reads & throws tonight. Overall, I was much more pleased with the offensive playcalling and philosophy than I was last week.

I think it's time to seriously think about saying goodbye to Garrett Wolfe. I just don't see the point anymore.

Very nice to see Greg Olsen get a little more involved.

I'm trying my hardest to remain positive here.

I thought Matt Forte showed some strong running, especially when the holes were there. He's not as explosive as LT or Jackson of course, but he's definitely tolerable so far.

They only scored 6 points on our first string D, and Harris, Hawk and KGB were out that game. There are concerns with our nickelbacks, so it wasn't really surprising to see the Niners tear us a new one once the backups came in. It's the preseason though, so you really can't judge how your team is going to look during the season based on one game. Sure this was probably the most important preseason game of the season, but it doesn't count for anything. I'm sure the Bears defense will be better than what they showed tonight.

I've always been a huge Wolfe fan, but the pick was extremely puzzling. You don't take a 5'5 running back in the 3rd round when his only projections are as a returner and a 3rd down back. Hopefully he catches on somewhere else because he has shown some flashes that he can exceed at this level.

Here is how I see things shaking out so far...

1. Packers 10-6

2. Vikings 8-8

3. Lions 6-10

4. Bears 6-10

What are you basing the Vikings prediction on? The Tavaris injury? I heard it wasn't really that serious. Though I admit I haven't really been following them all that closely.

Well the preseason game turned out well for me. Orton did well but the 49ers still won. Only thing that could have made it better is if Alex Smith outperformed O'Sullivan.

Yeah, Wolfe has no purpose if Jones is healthy. At this point, keep PJ Pope on the practice squad in case all hell breaks loose and there are muliple backfield injuries. Wolfe is the 3rd string returner, and Bennett or Vasher could do that just as well. He doesn't have a ton of value as a 3rd down back because Forte and AP are good at catching the ball out of the backfield. When you had Benson last year, Wolfe had more of a purpose.

As for the defense, the starters played almost 3 full quarters. They got ate up. The D-line was the worst I've ever seen them play. SFs O-line is very good, but that was ridiculous. Briggs still refuses to tackle people this preseason. Urlacher and Mike Brown look like they forgot where they're supposed to be. Tillman is apparently trying to pad his preseason tackle stats, as he lets completions happen in front of him. He committed a penalty everytime he played tight D. Vasher was similar.

That being said, the defense will be fine when it counts. Still sucks as that was probably the last real chance they had to shine before the season. The o-line was encouraging, but SF didn't bring anybody all night and they have a weak Dline. Still not a good run blocking unit, though Beekman was pretty good last night.

Agree with everything there except the defense being fine. That offense is going to keep that defense out there long enough to where statistically; they become bad as far as total numbers.
