I was reading this article in the Washington Post and found this line compelling.

One rival executive who has spoken to Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry recently came away convinced the Cubs will make a big play for a front-line starting pitcher in the coming weeks -- perhaps an acknowledgment the Cubs believe they have all the other pieces in place to end the franchise's 100-year drought without a World Series title.

The article then goes on to speculate about who is available and focuses on Sabathia.

Plenty of big-name starters (Toronto's A.J. Burnett, Milwaukee's Ben Sheets, Oakland's Joe Blanton and Rich Harden) are being floated around the rumor mill, but the one that perhaps makes the most sense is lefty C.C. Sabathia, free-agent-to-be of the Cleveland Indians.

I think it's becoming clear from all the rumors that we will be in the running for someone. Who and at what cost seem to be the only question.

vance, I don't thinnk "at what cost" is going to play a part. Everything Hendry has done in the last 2 or so yrs, has been geared up to for a World Series run, which means, I expect Hendry is going into the deadline with a "blank check", so to speak, in terms of what he's willing to spend. The main question will be, who are the Cubs targetting.

This certainly has the feel of a year - and a topline starter has the feel of a need - where we should go all out for a need, even if it's just for a few months.

The question is, does Hendry have the guts? :-k

Drew (FL): Jim, if you're the Cubs do you empty the farm for Sabathia if made available? If so, who would likely go in a deal?

SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:17 PM ET ) I would, because I don't think the Cubs system is that loaded right now. I'd ask for Josh Vitters, Jose Ceda and a third player. Vitters and Ceda aren't tearing it up, so maybe the Cubs would bite

I'd do this deal.

The cubs would bite??? Is he serious? If Cleveland would accept that deal and Hendry didn't pull the trigger, he should be beaten to within an inch of his life.

LOL!

Who's the third player - Mickey Mantle?

A textbook example of an unnecessary dependent clause.

SORRY!!! Given the the context of the original post, it was Cleveland proposing a trade to the cubs. If Cleveland proposed that deal and hendry didn't pull the trigger. Better? Is it really that big of a mistake for you to bring it up and attempt to make me look like an ass? It's just a message board that's talking about baseball!

No, I'm sorry. I wasn't taking a shot at you. It was an attempt at humor.

The bolded part of this sentence cannot stand alone, grammatically speaking. It is a dependent clause.

What I was saying is that it did not need to be there to modify the remainder of the sentence. The remainder of the sentence makes perfectly good sense to me even without the dependent clause.

"He (Hendry) should be beaten to within an inch of his life." <------- I can support this regardless of whether Hendry accepts such a trade or not.

ah, gotcha! That went right over my head. It's been way too long since I've discussed "dependent clauses". The public school system seems to have failed me again.

Or worse yet, he should have his lifetime supply of free Krispy Kremes cancelled. :D

I think he does. He did once trade Francis Beltran, Justin Jones (at the time two of the Cubs better prospects) in a deal that landed Nomar. He once traded Bobby Hill (again considered one the Cubs "top" prospects) for an underachieving 3rd baseman who turn it around in Chicago. Traded HS Choi (another said TOP prospect) for a solid, but unspectular 1st baseman at the time. So yeah, I do think if Hendry feels it's a worthwhile gamble, he'll take it.

The problem is...Cleveland would never take a deal of Vitters/Ceda and a third prospect for CC.

Posted
Someone clarify for me, is it a year from the draft date, signing date, or signing deadline that you can't trade a new draftee for?

It's the signing date. Vitters could be a PTBNL though.

Posted

The question is, is Cleveland ready to deal CC just yet? If they are, its going to cost more than it would if we waited a month. Still, if this ends up being our time of need, so be it. What would we have to give up? lets just say:

1 or 2 of: Gallagher, Veal, Ceda

1 of: Hill, Marshall

a few of Patterson, Murton, Hoffpauir, or whatever other prospects we might have floating around.

Or we could get AJ for Murton, Patterson, and Hill or Marshall.

Sabathia is still only guaranteed to be a 2-month rental. The Cubs should be willing to give up quality, but all the quality they possess. Now, someone that still has years left might warrant the entire farm, but Cleveland, a team likely ready to compete again next year, is better off asking for one or two quality, MLB ready or close guys for Sabathia rather than deep reaches into a farm, like Vitters.

The key to getting Sabathia willbe pitching. Lots of pitching. Fausto Carmonas rehab has apparently hit a snag, and hes expected to need more DL time than expected. The problem is, The Yankees have Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes to offer, and we have nothing close. If the Yanks plan on signing him to a long term deal, Kennedy,Hughes, and maybe another prospect for CC could happen, possibly sooner than later.

they won't give up both hughes and kennedy for Sabathia

2 scouts weigh in on what the Indians could get for Sabathia:

"I would say maybe they could get two young players that were at or close to the big-league level that they could control for a while."

Another scout said the Indians could get between two and three prospects, depending on whether that team could sign Sabathia to an extension before he becomes a free agent this winter.

Olney's Latest: Sabathia, Sexson

Must-read alongside your bowl of Cocoa Pebbles is Buster Olney's Saturday morning blog post:

If the C.C. Sabathia trade rumors were a horse race, he writes, as of today these teams would be the favorites:

1. Milwaukee Brewers

2. Chicago Cubs

3. Los Angeles Dodgers

4. Texas Rangers

5. Boston Red Sox

The problem is, he notes, some of these teams may or may not be in contention by the trade deadline; and/or could be bluffing.

Please not the Brewers.

That surprises me. Not the part about the Brewers but us being 2nd. Everything I've been hearing suggests the Cubs don't have the prospects for Sabathia. What's with the Yankees not even being on this list. They have plenty of young guys to trade and more payroll freed up this offseason than they'll even be able to spend.

What I'm hearing is that the Yankees have just gotten the farm system back in shape and don't wanna blow it all on Sabathia. They'd be more willing to trade for a Randy Wolf or Joe Blanton.
