I have no idea why they are saying that Sabathia can't be had because of our farm, but then suggest that Harden is an option. I believe due to Hardens numbers this year, and the fact that Oakland is contending this year, he is going to be even pricier than Sabathia.

Personally, I don't think we get either of them and end up with Burnett, who I think is the one pitcher whose current ballclub wants to get rid of the most.

Sabathia threw more innings last year than Harden has the last 3 years combined.

Agreed. But hes absolutely dominating right now, and theoretically the A's have absolutely no reason to trade him since they are currently contending

I'm gonna flip if the Brewers get Sabathia.

I think Hendry will do everything in his power to not let that happen.

If Gallagher is seriously "untouchable"...

...

Henry, don't be an idiot.

He's as untouchable as Sam Fuld was in the offseason.

Would you really hold up a Sabathia deal because they want Gallagher as part of the package? As long as we can sign CC to an extension, I'd give Sean up in a heartbeat (sorry, Mr. Gallagher).

yeah but sabathia is probably going to be asking for $20M a year. if you do that you've got about $60M next year going to 4 starters, and beyond then you've got nearly $50M a year going to 3 starters. tack on $13M for lee, $12M for fukudome, $15M for ARam and about $17M for soriano - that's $108M and you still need a bullpen, 2 more starters, 4 more position players and a bench. unless you're the yankees, this is not doable.

I'd do the deal even if he's a 3 month rental.

The problem is that there would be no guarantee of signing Sabathia to an extension after giving up Gallagher. I'm not sure Sabathia as a 2-3 month rental is worth Gallagher plus others. Gallagher looks to be an important part of the rotation for this year and in the future.

Screw the future.

Win now.

The '93 Phillies could have had the Big Unit in what could have easily been their year, but opted to "stay young" and not give up their prospects. Turns out the WS was likely just one giant, hideous bird-man of a pitcher away.

Cleveland has fallen into last place. They are eight under .500, and sit nine games back. I have a feeling that Shapiro will start dealing soon.

If the Indians run off a string of four or five wins in a row, it might slow the process, but my guess is that Sabathia will be deal a day or so after the break.

And I hope Hendry jumps in hard and fast!!

I have no doubt Hendry will make a play. Whether it will be enough, I don't know. I am convinced that Jim will do what he can.

I am too. Hopefully we can find a good third trading partner, because I think that's what will be necessary.

I saw an article the other day that suggested the Dodgers trade a middle relief pitcher or a prospect (both with a live arm) for Juan Rivera of the Angels (who like hard throwing prospects). Perhaps Ceda for Rivera and then flip Rivera to the Indians as part of the Sabathia deal.

It's currently believed that the Brew Crew are the front runners for Sabathia and they have the prospects to outbid the Cubs, IMO.

I think Sabathia will cost the Cubs at least Pie and Gallagher, maybe a Colvin.

I agree that if the Brewers decided to go after him, they have the prospects. LaPorta and Gamel are both studs. Gamel however is not going to stick at third. I think he has 27 errors already there this year. He needs to move to LF or 1B and he's not going to move ahead of Braun, Fielder, or LaPorta at those spots. My guess is that Gamel would be the chip used to be the centerpiece of a Sabathia deal if the Brewers decide to play poker.

If the Cubs really want to hold on to Gallagher, the cost would be Marshall, Pie, and Ceda with a couple other prospects likely tossed in as well.

I think if Zell has given Hendry the COMPLETE green light to do what it takes to win, then I would think giving CC an extension would be part of that plan.

Regardless of whether Hendry will part with Gallagher or not, if the Brewers decide to make a full court press for Sabathia, I don't think we can outbid them. LaPorta is better than anything we have. Gamel is also probably worth more than any player we could toss in there. If the Brewers would part with a package of Gamel, Salome, and Parra, I just don't think we could compete with that.

What we need to hope is that the Brewers stay far enough back that they aren't willing to part with those players for a rental and really only enter the Sabathia sweepstakes from the periphery. Because if the Brewers decide to go all in for Sabathia, we don't have the players to match what they could give up, no matter how strong the desire.

The thing the Brewers have to worry about if thet trade for CC is what will their pitching staff look like next year. Say Sheets leaves via FA and CC signs somewhere else. Where does that leave their pitching staff?

Gallardo

Bush

then what?

It's 2-3 months of Sabathia plus 2 first round picks, or Sabathia + extension.

This then becomes a no-brainer.

You trade away 3 top prospects to get Sabathia. I would hand the NL pennant over to the Cubs now if this happened.

Then you either lose Sabathia after the season and have 3 1st round picks in 2009 to replenish the prospects you lost or you sign Sabathia to a long term contract and have arguably the best 1-2 punch in baseball for the next four seasons.

Easy to say after the fact. No one person is a guarantee of a world championship. Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of going for it all, and picking up another stud starter, but this whole it's been 100 years, trade everyone now is the type of mentality that has got us into many messes in the past.

Agreed. Get Sabathia here and go for it in '08, then just wait and see how things shake out over the winter.

Either Sabathia comes back on a whopper contract (which is mighty frightening, I might add), or you've got some nice draft picks to fall back on.

Incidentally, if Sabathia lands in Milwaukee instead, the Brewers could conceivably have 5 picks in the top 30-something next June... their own first-rounder, plus 2 for Sheets, plus 2 more for Sabathia. Yikes.
