IMO the Cubs should sell the farm for CC if he is indeed available - with or without guarantees of an extension. Its been far too long since the Cubs have been setup this well to make a deep run in October.

Agreed. This ain't Matt Karchner people. CC would clearly make the Cubs the favorites to win the World Series. Whether they make it or not is besides the point. The Cubs didn't have a realistic shot to win it all last year. With CC they would. You have to do what it takes to get that.

Same here. I was a little apprehensive because I hadn't seen that monthly split, but now I'm definitely sold. Do what it takes, Pie, Hill, Gallagher, whatever.

I was going to break it down earlier, but I was lazy. his turnaround actually started with his last 2 starts in April (14 IP, 1 ER). considering he had back-to-back starts in early April giving up 9 ER in each, his numbers look pretty good. he's given up 2 runs or less in 6 of his last 9 starts, and gave up 4 runs in each of the other 3.

Since his disaster starts:

5 starts, 36.1 IP, 1.49 ERA, 29 H, 6 ER, 8 BB, 43 K, 1 HR, .220/.270/.295 against

I would do everything I could to keep Gallagher. I think this kid is has the potential to be at least a #3 starter, maybe 2. I really like him in the rotation now.

Big Z

CC

Demp

Lilly

Gallagher

i agree with going for broke to get sabathia. some of these contracts we have may hamstring us in the future, and our farm system isn't that great. it may be now or never for the cubs.

isn't that all the more reason to hang onto Felix, Gallagher, etc., so that our future isn't completely bleak?

regardless, I'd probably rather just rest the hell out of Dempster and Marmol and take my changes with Z, Dempster and Lilly/Hill/Gallagher for 5-6 innings in the playoffs, leaning more on the strong bullpen and offense. it may be a bit risky, but so is mortgaging any semblance of future for such an uncertainty. last year's playoff showing for CC doesn't exactly inspire confidence, either.

i'd love Harden, however.

Absolutely. Nobody in the Cubs system is such a can't miss prospect that they couldn't be dealt if Sabathia was available. After 100 years of failing to win a WS, this is a gamble you have to make. I would basically deal anybody and everybody that isn't on the current Cubs ML roster, and a couple that are on it.

Incidentally, aren't we all glad we didn't deal half our best trading pieces for Brian Roberts. The O's have gotta be kicking themselves now.

With every start his price goes up. CG on FSN North tongiht.

Also, some people seem to need reminding: YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!

9 innings, 0 runs, 5 hits, 0 walks, faced 29 in 106 pitches. All 5 hits were singles, 2 were bunt hits. He was perfect after the 4th.

Same here, BUT he shouldn't be a deal breaker either.

Besides, trade your four best prospects (admitted, not as strong as others, but Gallagher/Marshall/Pie/Ceda) to get that impact starter, to compliment Z. You can either re-sign CC at the end of the yr, or you can let CC go and get two picks in return, to help restock the farm system.

I feel alot more confident going into the playoffs with Z/CC/Dempster/Lilly then Z/Lilly/Dempster/Marquis.

There is no future, if you don't win today, imo.

With Jake Westbrook going down for the year, this may be a white flag trade for the Tribe. I know that it's a rental to go after CC, because he will want Z-type money, but he would be sweet to get. Are we all agreed that we need a 2-3 starter and not a 4-5. I don't know. I'd we can offer Hill-Marshall-and plenty of young unproven pitching. Tough call for Hendry.

One thing, Grady Sizemore is real good. I know he's the face of the franchise, but... I can dream can't I?

He's also signed through 2012 at a very reasonable cost. He's not going anywhere.

I see no reason to assume it would be a rental.

Something screwy must've happened when I was on BR yesterday.

Anyways, here's what he's done so far this year:

First 4 starts

12.2 IP, 15.63 ERA, 26 H, 22 ER, 11 BB, 7 K, .433/.514/.717 against

Last 10 starts

73.1 IP, 2.09 ERA, 63 H, 17 ER, 14 BB, 73 K, .235/.278/.336 against

His WHIP from his last 10 starts is nearly 1/3rd of what it was to begin the season.

Read this on PDS forums:

Buster Olney says "some folks within the industry" believe the Cubs would be C.C. Sabathia's most aggressive suitor if he becomes available.

Can anyone find this article?

And furthermore, how reliable is Buster Olney (I'm seriously asking, not making some kind of half hearted sarcastic jab)?

CC Sabathia is the reason why all of us should be White Sox fans for the next month or so, obvouisly cross-town series excluded. Sabathia is only going to become available if the Indians fall out of it. The Indians are 7.5 games back now. We need the White Sox to keep winning to bury the Indians by the all-star break to make them sellers.

While it is nice to see that the Cubs are listed as the most agressive suitors for Sabathia, you do have to worry about how we match up with the Indians. The Indians as many have said are going to be most interested in quality and not quantity, which we don't have, and they are going to be more interested in offense than pitching. Our best position prospect plays a position that the Indians have locked up for a while, and whose values as a prospect is pretty much lost if he isn't a CF.

When it is all said and done, Sabathia is going to be the prime target if he is made available, and another starter is going to be biggest need barring injury.

I've heard that he said this on Mike & Mike in the Morning.

Heck I'm not even "within the industry" and I still could've guessed this was true.

Hendry has always been aggressive/generous on the trade market, and especially so when he figures he's got a contender on his hands.

i don't know that i'd say hendry has always been aggressive on the trade market. he's done well to take guys like lee and ramirez off of small market teams, but since the nomar trade, he hasn't really made many impact deals.

that being said, the cubs have a strong and balanced offense, but it looks like hill may be a non-factor this season. if that's the case, they have a serious hole at the #2/3 starter, and it makes a whole lot of sense to go after a pitcher of sabathia's caliber.

I think Rich Hill would be the center piece. While the Indians have a good bit of pitching, I see Hill as a pitcher they would be interested in acquiring. After Hill, they will likely go after pieces in the lower levels that they believe will help them more than what they would get in compensatory picks.

I disagree Vance Rich Hill. I don't see Hill being the centerpiece, seeing as they have three Top 10 prospects that are lefties (Lofgren, Laffey, and Huff) plus not counting Sabathia, the Indians have two other lefties in their rotation in Cliff Lee and Jeremy Sowers. They only reason why they would want Hill, is if they could flip say someone like Sowers to another team for a bat. Not to mention, Hill has very little trade value. So, if the Indians were to want a lefty pitcher in the deal, IMO, they would ask for Sean Marshall over Rich Hill.

With that said, as much as I want CC, I don't know if we are a good fit for a trade, unless Hendry can pull a third team into the discussion, ala "The Nomar trade."

Rich Hill seems like a real good buy low guy for a team that has confidence in its coaching. Get him, get his mechanics back to pre-Lou tweaks, and you have a great shot at a real good pitcher. And if the Indians do that and don't want him in their system, it's easy to trade him once you've fixed his mechanics. If I'm the Indians, I want Hill in the deal. Indians don't strike me as a team that's concerned with having too many lefties - they want good pitchers, regardless of handedness.

He's a free agent after the year and depending on what direction the Indians want to go, this is an interesting idea. Would they get 2 top picks if he goes free agent? If so, unless they think the Cubs have something that can either help them next year or the year after I doubt that the Cubs could top that. Now, if the Cubs sent Hill, Gallagher, Pie and a couple of more top minor guys and couldn't resign CC they would get those top picks but those guys wouldn't help the Cubs for a couple of years and leave a big hole in the rotation. I just have a problem with CC's weight and possible health problems.
