As much as I was frustrated with the Prior/Cubs situation and glad to see him go, I'll be rooting for him to make a comeback from all these injuries. It truly is sad to see such potential go unrealized and it would be unrealistic to expect anything spectacular out of him in the future, but I just hope to see him again sometime on a major league mound.

If hes going to have any hope at continuing his career, hes going to have to go the Kerry Wood way and try to catch on as a reliever.

He can't stay healthy even enough to do that. It's almost as if, he has just been a victim of horrible medical practice between not being diagnosed with the req'd surgery with the Cubs and then he supposedly gets that taken care of in SD and either didn't get the proper surgery or a poor rehab schedule that re-injured it.

As sad as it is for the career of Mark Prior, I'm selfishly sort of happy to see this. It would rip my heart out to see the guy leave the Cubs and then stay injury-free and be a successful pitcher.

Odd how many people are/were happy (or relieved, or whatever) that Prior re-injured his shoulder.

I hate to see anyones career go like this, possibly end like this. I enjoyed watching him pitch and it was exciting to see him fly through the Cubs minor league system to the big team. Mike Harkey is the only other guy like that I can remember being so good to have it fall to injury like this.

At first when I heard this I thought, "well of course." But then I read the article and it made me pretty sad. I have no ill will at all for Mark, I wish him well and it's really a shame what happened to him.

He's this generation's Mark (The Bird) Fidrych. :(

Outstanding comparison. He had ridiculous potential just like Prior.

And just like Prior, his rookie season made it look like he'd actually live up to that potential. I'm fairly sure Fidrych won Rookie of the Year, and Prior almost certainly would have in 2003 if he had qualified.

How about Mike Harkey?
Another good analogy. And although he hadn't had major league success yet when he got injured, Lance Dickson is another.

None of these guys that have been listed were as good as Prior.

I'm not saying they were as good as Prior. I'm saying they were similar in that they were good (or, in the case of Dickson, showed promise of being good) but then had promising careers ended because of arm injuries. Harkey is a bit different because his own stupidity contributed to his downfall (he tore up his knee when he decided he was Ozzie Smih and tried to do a cartwheel on the field).

This is really too bad, and Dusty did him no favors, but it does show that Hendry understood what Mark is facing...and he still offered him a second year.

I'm pretty sure what Hendry offered was a club option for a second year, not a guaranteed second year. That would have protected the Cubs, not Prior.
