Sad. How can you let a 22 year old kid throw 230 innings and average 113 pitches per start? I hated that he was a Cub, but he really was a joy to watch.

The better question is how can you do this, then be handed another job in the same division with 3 guys who he could do the same thing to. Bailey, Cueto, and to an extent Volquez could all fall prey to Dusty.

New stuff on Prior...

Mark Prior is out of surgery, but a second injury was found, according to mlb.com

If that weren't enough to put an end to his bid to pitch this season, doctors also found a second injury -- one that isn't normally associated with baseball.

Prior's anterior capsule was torn away from the humerus, the bone in the upper arm. Team physicians Heinz Hoenecke and Jan Fronek performed the surgery and said the second injury is normally associated with traumatic events like a fall.

Marcus Giles anyone?

The players were injured Friday [7/11/03] in the second inning. Prior was running from first on a grounder hit to Giles, when the two slammed into each other on the basepath. Prior was called out for interference.

Prior's left knee hit Giles flush in the face. The Cubs pitcher toppled over Giles, falling on his right shoulder.

Took them 5 years to find that eh?

The second injury, which is also known as HAGL for humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligaments, is unrelated to Prior's arthroscopic surgery, which the doctors said was healing properly. Padres general manager Kevin Towers also said he might be interested in a possible Minor League contract for Prior, who will be a free agent at season's end.

So that second injury never healed? If it was the Marcus Giles incident, could it really take that long to heal, even with the throwing he's done since?

Regardless, that's pretty crappy news. What a talent he could have been. Hopefully he can make it back someday.

I have to admit I wasn't surprised when I heard about this, but it's still a shame. It must be frustrating for a player to have so much potential to lose it all due to injury. Best of luck Mark, hope to see you back someday.

Fixed. Nobody's going to change Dusty. Those young arms are dead meat.

I don't believe that is an injury that can heal on its own. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if something like that tears away from the bone, I believe the only way to fix it is surgery.

This is from a report back in 2000:

Medscape.com[/url]"]Anterior Instability: HAGL Lesion

The Bankart lesion and ligamentous laxity are well-known causes of anterior shoulder instability. Dr. Bokor discussed humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligament (HAGL), a lesser-known cause of instability. Wolf and colleagues[9] reported HAGL lesions in 9.3% of 64 patients with instability.

Bokor and colleagues retrospectively studied a consecutive series of 547 shoulders in 529 patients undergoing operation for instability.[10] These authors identified HAGL lesions in only 6.8% of shoulders. HAGL lesions were identified in 18.2% of patients in whom cuff reconstruction or anterior instability reconstruction failed. In male athletes over the age of 25 with a violent injury, HAGL lesions were identified in 38% of patients. The HAGL lesion, unfortunately, requires open repair of the capsule and postoperative immobilization. Open repair in surgical reconstructions is comparable to most instabilities. However, because of shortening of the inferior glenohumeral ligament, there may be associated loss of motion. Open repair should be considered in all patients with HAGL lesions who also have anterior instability.

8 years is a long time in medicine, but that does not sound good.

It's 2008 and with hover crafts and cars getting 200 MPG you'd think they'd have found this earlier with all the technology we have. Honestly, this must have been so hidden that a bunch of MRI's couldn't see it and the only way they could have was during a surgery. This makes me dislike Giles even more.

I won't hold my breath waiting for mea culpas from the people who said he needs to learn to pitch through pain, that he's not going all out cause he just wants his big free agent contract.
