Though Corey Patterson was supposed to be at the plate, David Ross batted out of order in the ninth inning of an 8-3 loss to the Mets on Sunday.

Per MLB rules, Ross has to complete his at-bat to be ruled out, and the outcome of his at-bat is then discarded with no runners allowed to advance. The Mets allowed him to do so, and since he lined out to right there was little harm done. Ross was the batter listed in the order after Patterson, so he was forced to come back to the plate for his 'real' at-bat and Patterson was charged the out. Ross singled after returning to the batter's box.

Typical Dusty Baker.

I feel like the Mets messed this up. They should've let Patterson hit, then if he gets a hit, you say he hit out of order.

What is this, Little League? Per MLB rules, Ross has to complete his at-bat to be ruled out, and the outcome of his at-bat is then discarded with no runners allowed to advance. One also has to wonder exactly what function Dusty Baker is serving if he can't even make sure his hitters know where they're hitting.

Ok sweet, so Latin players can play in the heat but cant play in front of their family.

From yesterdays post game comments.

Baker said he thought that Cueto, a 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic, might have had family in New York and that the pitcher was hyped up to put on a good show.

"Some Latin players have family here and they want to perform well, and that was the first time he was pitching here in New York," Baker said.

Cueto said he has a brother living here, but that had nothing to do with why he struggled against the Mets.

I like that it was some random ass theory he threw out there, not that he even knew if Cueto had family in the city. Well some Latin guys live in New York, therefore Cueto probably has relatives there, and felt pressure. I mean wow.

It was Ross who hit out of order, not Patterson. Had Patterson led off the ninth, it would have been the correct order.

I think he meant they should have let Patterson hit after Ross had made that out. Patterson was standing on deck getting ready to bat when the Mets came out after Ross' lineout to complain, which forced the Reds to bat Ross again. If Patterson makes an out, no big deal. If he gets a hit, then you go say he batted out of order and you get an out. By complaining, they allowed Ross to get back up there and single, instead of two guaranteed outs no matter what with Patterson up.

It's unfair to blame Dusty on this. The players are the ones who grab the bat and walk up to the plate, Dusty can't do that for them.

"Reds manager Dusty Baker said the batting order was correct on the dugout board and on his scorecard.

"The guys hit out of order, and it's my job to catch that," Baker said. "So I take full responsibility."

The problem was the double switch a few innings earlier, apparently Patterson and Ross weren't aware of it.

If this isn't part of a manager's job, what exactly is he supposed to do?

Wow. Dusty owned up to something instead of making lame excuses or trying to blame someone else.

Maybe he's turned over a new leaf.

I agree, it's nice to see him taking the heat for that.

If only we could get him to take some heat for Derrek Lee's RBI total in 2004-2006.
