He's bad. Very bad.

At least Lopez can hit. And I really don't even think Theriot is that great of a defender, to be honest with you. He has no range at a position that requires it. I know Lopez is a real crappy defender, but I've been sick of Theriot since August. It's time for a change.

So when does the casual fan base turn on Theriot?

They won't. As long as Theriot plays with gumption, plays the game the "right way", (whatever that means) gets dirty, plays hard, the average fan won't turn on him. But wait till ARam DOESN'T hustle down the 1st base line, for the first time this yr, and fans will turn on him, as if he was some kind of villian.

If Theriot was batting either seventh or eighth, I wouldn't have much of a problem with him. But he has absolutely no business batting leadoff.

that's a problem with the manager, not the player

I'd be able to stand Theriot if he at least made attempts to pull the ball sometimes. He's like, the opposite of most hitters and tries to take everything the other way. When I first saw him I thought maybe he was just constantly behind the ball, but after (unfortunately) watching him a full season, it's pretty clear that's what he's trying to do. Using the other field is a good thing, but you can't do it every single pitch you see.

It's just his body couldn't handle the grind of starting a 2nd full major league season. He'll be fine now that he's adjusted.

That's about the most lame excuse in the book. If it's true, then it's further proof that the guy doesn't belong in the bigs.

I agree with this. This is the reason why I don't get all the Theriot hate. Its not his fault that he is batting leadoff.

I hate that he admitted that his stats suck and claimed it as a badge of pride or some weird accomplishment right before the season.

I hate that he has no power and doesn't take many walks.

I hate that we have to have managers who make bad decisions automatically if the wrong players find their way on the roster.

I hate that we're one SS away from a really good lineup, but we made no move to fix it, and we even bat our worst hitter first.

The hate for Theriot is because between him and Lou, he's the movable piece, and a very easy solution to this crapfest. He sucks, ship him to AAA and never let us utter his name henceforth.

He's definitely no Khalil Green.

Khalil Greene, San Diego. He's the best hitter you never hear about. Why? The ridiculous splits caused by playing at Petco Park. He's a mouse at home (.228, 27 home runs, .370 slugging; includes 11 games at Qualcomm Stadium) and a lion on the road (.280, 47 homers, .515 slugging). Indeed, his road slugging average is the same as the career slugging percentages of Rafael Palmeiro, Willie McCovey and Jose Canseco.

If there's one player that MIGHT be available at this point (in other words, not Hanley Ramirez, ARod, etc. ) that I would be OK with Hendry giving up a big bunch of prospects for, it's Greene.

Sigh.

the only way greene is going to be available will be if the padres are a walking disaster come the trading deadline...until then...there is no way they are going to deal him unless it is a severely stupid and lopsided deal

Whoops. My apologies. But, I have heard Cubs management use that excuse for him from the tail end of last season. "Theriot wore down late in the season, blah blah blah."

No, he didn't wear down. That's just who he is.

Yeah, I know and I'm not happy with Lou for making this decision even though it wasn't surprising in the least.

I have to tell you..I'm really disappointed in Lou's lineup, it's actually Dusty-like. I know he will adjust but we don't have the luxury of having another slow start like last year.

So I have a serious question.

What could Theriot do to take himself off of the "Guy NSBB Complains about all season" bandwgn?

Probably not salvageable at this point but I recall at 1 point, that Theriot was a very likable player and one that got a lot of support here at the beginning.

For me OBP up around 360. You pretty much need that to be productive when your only other asset is good baserunning and average defense at SS.

A torn ACL would probably do the trick. (not that I'm hoping for it -- just answering the ?)
