Using Garciaparra as an example as to why we should give Crisp a free pass for two mediocre years is not a good idea. Garciaparra still sucks. Crisp has showed no signs of coming out of it, Derrek Lee has already done so. This talk reminds me too much of the Aubrey Huff discussions, where people gave him free pass after free pass, saying he would be the guy he was from 2002-04 and yeah, that's clearly not going to happen.

Did Crane specifically say they weren't pitchers?

No, and I don't understand why people keep saying that. I've listened to the interview and he never said that.

Eh.. I could see how people thought've it like that. The answer was in reply to "are the Cubs going after Santana" and Kenney said he would rather make these two moves then give up what it took for Santana (player and moneywise) considering he only played every 5 days. It's up to your interpretation of whether or not he was just talking about Santana or any other pitcher in that sense.

He could have been talking about Roberts and Nathan, as Nathan would pitch more than just every five days.

Then Demp and Dero for Burnett and call it a day. I would rather not trade Dero, but that was rumor going around for Burnett.

Que? I assume his two "mediocre" years were the years with the cubs. Since then he has put up:

(Avg/Obp/Slg/OPS+)

2006:.303/.367/.505/120

2007:.283/.328/.371/78

Granted 2007 was a down year - a very down year - for him. However, saying he "still sucks" implies he has done poorly ever since his injuries. 2006 is a great year that does not qualify anything NEAR sucking.

My source on this Crisp rumor just heard from his Boston contact that the Red Sox re-signed Bobby Kielty this evening in "anticipation of imminently moving" Coco Crisp. When I asked if "imminently" is used the same way as the media has used it to describe Johan Santana and Erik Bedard stories he laughed.

The Cubs are still believed to be in this, although he heard tonight that there are 2 other teams involved (1 from each league). He was guessing Texas and St. Louis.

That would certainly make Pie expendable in the eyes of the Cubs' brass.

I don't care for Pie, but if the possible acquisition of Coco [expletive] Cirsp making anybody "expendible" in the Cubs eyes, we're in big trouble. I'd rather have Pie starting than Crisp without question.

We are talking about a fast guy who steals bases and plays awesome defense at an up-the-middle position. Of course Hendry and Lou are going to love him. And I'm sure the Cubs will try to teach him to switch hit.

Update from Ken Rosenthal about the possibility of Crisp being traded to the Cubs:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7764824/Forced-retirement-could-make-2013-ballot-crowded

The Cubs do not view Crisp as a viable alternative if they fail to acquire Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts; Crisp's .329 career on-base percentage makes him ill-suited for the top of the order, and the Cubs don't want a center fielder who might block Felix Pie or Tyler Colvin; they would prefer a platoon partner such as the Rangers' Marlon Byrd.

As if Marlon Byrd is significantly better (completely disregarding last season).

First of all, Crisp already is a switch hitter, and if he wasn't, you don't "teach" a guy to switch hit at 28 years old. Anyways his defense hasn't been all that great until this season, and his bat is non-existant. The dude is worthless.

I'm not debating that he's craptastic. I'm just saying Hendry and Lou probably don't feel that way. Does he really seem like the kind of player either one of them wouldn't love?

Interesting view. Not sure I see the logic in that view. I do certainly agree that Crisp would not be comparable to Roberts as a top-of-the-order guy. And I agree that you don't want a dude like that blocking Pie or Colvin. Maybe I don't know the market right.

But I'd think there could be merit in picking up Crisp as a 4th outfielder; given his contract, I don't think he'd cost that much in trade value. As a switch, no reason he couldn't be the platoon partner for pie. (Other than that he isn't a very good offensive player). As a switch who can field the spot, he'd provide some insurance should pie and farm alternatives (Fuld, patterson) bust.

So I don't see why he couldn't be a 4th/5th outfielder candidate, the same type of role envisioned for Byrd or whomever. Unless the following were why: 1) his dollar price is too high 2) his trade price is too high 3) he isn't good enough offensively for 4th outfielder/platoon CF. Given he's not very good offensively, maybe #3 applies.

Is he just speculating or have there actually been talks yet?

Latest from my source: developing story out of Boston - Curt Schilling may be out for the season due to a serious shoulder problem. Boston may be in the market for a starting pitcher. While Ken Rosenthal suggested yesterday that the Cubs were not interested in Crisp because he would block Pie and Colvin, my source thinks the Cubs real reluctance was taking on Crisp's contract. However, based on new circumstances, there may be an opportunity for the Cubs to offset Crisp's salary in 2008 by trading an equal salary like Ryan Dempster's or Jason Marquis in addition to a prospect.

All still rumor phase, but intriguing.

Sign me up for Dempster or Marquis plus a prospect for Crisp! (assuming of course that prospect isn't Pie, Gallagher, Vitters etc.)

If they could swing that, then that would open the door to a Pie deal focusing on acquiring a SS or "good" starter. Pie and B level prospect to Oakland for Blanton would work for me.

Is there any realistic chance Demp/Marquis + prospect would net us crisp?
