Let me get this straight: in order for Jim Hendry to get rid of a player that no one other than Jim wanted at the time he was signed, Hendry would have to trade for a center fielder who is lesser talented, but would ultimately start over a center fielder who was, at one point, the crown jewel of the position player part of his minor league system?

All too often, Jim. All too often.

Is it a given that Crisp returns to his pre-broken wirst form of .290? Or are his .264/.317 and .268/.330 since his injury more likely?

Far from a given. And if he's gonna hit .260-.270 and only get on base 31-33% of the time, there's a good chance that if Pie can't do that, he'll at least be in the ballpark. You get cheap production that likely reaps you more reward in 2009 and beyond.

I'm not defending a possible Crisp acquisition, merely commenting on this point. From what we have seen with hand and wrist injuries in recent years (as Cubs fans we've had our share of hand injuries), if you take past examples as a model, return to form seems likely for a hitter that was a solid contact guy before the injury. Contact and gap capability seem to come back just fine after a half-to-whole year of lower production. Look to the 2nd year back for players who have suffered wrist/hand injuries. Power is different story, but with Crisp there is no reason to even to take the discussion that direction.

It is also possible that hand/wrist is simply a unique case for every hitter, and past players' returns can't be used as baselines for comparison. But if you do want to look for comparable past injuries in active players, most have returned to form with regards to the contact aspect of their games.

Sounds like it is only a matter of time until Crisp loses the Red Sox starting job.

It's clear to those around the team that the Red Sox want Ellsbury to win the job. But the team hasn't been able to trade the other centerfielder on the roster, Coco Crisp, and Francona and others are quick to remind everybody -- probably because they don't want to sully his trade value -- that Crisp, don't forget, is the incumbent.

The Sox, as it looks right now, very well could end up with both Crisp and Ellsbury on the Opening Day roster. And Ellsbury, for what it's worth, has been struggling in his first few games of the spring. Crisp hasn't been playing nearly as much.

Who will be the starter if both break camp with the Sox? The smart money remains clearly on Ellsbury. But nothing, officially, has been settled, and true to his nature -- and being the smart guy that he is -- Ellsbury is not about to take anything for granted.

Boston Globe reports Red Sox have no interest in Marquis or Fuld.

Inconceivable!

"I do not think that word means what you think it means."

Red Sox News doesn't like the rumored offer of Jason Marquis and Sam Fuld for Crisp. More likely they believe a package of Josh Donaldson and either Bobby Howry or Carmen Pignatiello could be accepted by the Sox.

Donaldson + Pignatello for Crisp ?

I don't believe I would consider including Donaldson in a deal for Crisp. If he was the cost of doing business by getting rid of Marquis and his entire deal, and getting back something decent, then perhaps. Otherwise, no way.

First of all, Josh Donaldson can't even be traded, yet. So it don't matter if they would considered Donaldson, he isn't available due to draft rules, please the Cubs wouldn't do it.

Second: Even if he is eligibility to be dealt, I wouldn't for Crisp. Now if it's Donaldson/Piggy for Ellsbury, then sure...but for Crisp, Fuld/Piggy, IMO, is more then enough.

Latest on Rotoworld:

According to WFAN's Ed Coleman, the Red Sox and Mets are working on a deal that would send Coco Crisp to New York for Angel Pagan.

The Red Sox would be practically giving Crisp away, but they may feel they have no choice if he's going to cause problems as a fourth outfielder. It's not like there's a real market for him when Corey Patterson can't do better than a minor league deal and Kenny Lofton remains a free agent. Pagan at least can serve as a backup center fielder and would be content in the role, unlike Crisp.

Oh how everything comes full circle

Not sure if this has already been posted, but with so many people hating Ryan Theriot's production as a shortstop, compare his numbers last year to Crisp's:

2008 Stats 2B 3B HR SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS

Ryan Theriot 30 2 3 28 4 .266 .326 .346 .672

Coco Crisp 28 7 6 28 6 .268 .330 .382 .712

That was enough for me to realize that we don't want Crisp on this team - we already have him playing shortstop.

Schilling is out for half the season. Does that have any bearing on a deal for Marquis?

I think thats the reason why the Cubs were talking to the Sox.

lol whoever in floated the "donaldson & howry for crisp" idea is a moron. crisp is a mediocre hitter with a good glove; howry is a very solid setup man and donaldson is a good offensive prospect at a position where offense is hard to come by. either howry or donaldson would easily be too much for a guy the sox feel they have to dump; giving both up would be the definition of insane.
