Help me out here, cause I can't seem to find a reason that the Jays would make this trade. Good move by the Cards getting out of the 3 years and 33 million they owed Rolen.

Rolen, 32, is owed $33 million over the next three seasons. Glaus, 31, is guaranteed $24 million over the next two, including an $11.25 million player option for 2009.

Unless cash is exchanged, the Jays basically go from a 3/$35.25m contract to a 3/$33m contract. Glaus also has his share of injury issues.

I could see a prospect going from the Cardinals to the Jays if this goes down, though.

Didn't realize that Glaus had a player option, thought it was a team option.

Never seen this before, but I just came across it while reading a Cards forum...

How do you get 3/$35.25? The player option is for 2009, not 2010.

Whoops, my brain was still stuck in 2007.

Unfort. Rolen's injury history and the uncertain nature of it, tips this trade in the favor of STL. We'll see how Glaus' foot surgery impacts his range, he had good range before and a strong arm.

Contracts would likely cancel out and STL gets a better player, it would be a good move for the Cards and it would get rid of a potential clubhouse problem.

Interesting post over at gatewayredbirds.com...

I get it perfectly. It's a trade that Toronto will gladly make that isn't going to look bad to Cards fans who focus on triple crown stats. Just FYI, WARP1 for the two 3Bs:

2007

Rolen 4.1

Glaus 4.0

2006

Rolen 8.4

Glaus 6.3

2005

Glaus 4.9

Rolen 2.2

2004

Rolen 11.0

Glaus 2.0

2003

Rolen 8.3

Glaus 1.6

2002

Rolen 9.7

Glaus 6.1

2001

Rolen 9.4

Glaus 5.5

2000

Glaus 9.4

Rolen 6.5

I know 2000 doesn't mean a whole lot when we're talking about 2008. I just wanted to illustrate how long it's been since Rolen played more than a third of the season and wasn't better than Glaus.

I think this is a way better deal for the Cardinals. I don't like the fact that Glaus will be visiting Wrigley. Expect some homeruns off his bat for sure.

WTF?!? Why the holy hell would the Jays make this deal????????

Hello? Medical reports? Might wanna have, you know, A LOOK AT THEM??

You don't even have to look at that. Look at his numbers the last year his shoulder is held together by masking tape and silly putty

Tony never cared about having steroid users on his team as long as they are productive.

This deal has a sense of humor:"Oh, you are demanding a trade, Scotty? Fine - you are banished to Toronto. Enjoy the ugly stadium an a 0% chance of ever playing in the postseason."

this sucks. Mozeliak is ruining the team. This trade is going to hurt for awhile imo.

I don't get your opinion. Glaus is likely the better player at this point, on a shorter, cheaper contract. How does this hurt, especially for "awhile?"

Rolen has a huge defensice advantage if UZR is to be believed. Almost three wins last year. Enough to bridge the gap between a 95 OPS+ and a 120 OPS+. The defensive numbers may not represent a projection, but needless to say, Rolen is superior there by that metric. Some others like Glaus now, but only since he's moved to the turf, which is curious.

The rest of how you feel about the trade is entirely speculative on his medical prognosis. The 2006 version of Rolen is worth quite a bit more than any year Glaus has put up. The Cardinals aren't trading him because of straight up analysis and medical projection, but because he doesn't get along with Tony. So, they are already at a disadvantage as Mo likely has a directive to make "the best move possible" and that's it. Within that framework he's actually done really well, IMO, but the framework sucks (and as long as players like Miles and Izturis types are on the roster, TLR directives will continue to hamper the team).

What you are left with is just a guess medically, however, the only people that have had doctors look at Rolen and have an objective stance are the Blue Jays. That's scary. It's kind of a catch-22, but if it's a gamble that other teams want to take, it's a gamble that I think the Cardinals should take. He's a 7-win player if healthy. If nobody wanted him, I'd want him moved ...

This is not an opinion shared by many Cardinals fans, apparently.

This is my favorite part of the Glauss contract.

"deal includes $0.25M annually for personal business expenses (wife's equestrian training)"

My wife and kids would really go nuts if that was in my contract

Does any organization get more for crap in trades than the Cardinals? Scott Rolen is terrible. We can't give away Jacque Jones for two years, let alone for a guy who has Glaus' potential.

Flat out steal for the Cards here no matter which way you shake it.

1. Bad contract

2. Health issues

3. Manager he doesn't want to play for.

yet they get a healthy , younger, better contract and at this point a superior player.

It's interesting that you brought up Jacque Jones, because that's exactly what I thought of. Rolen doesn't want to be in St. Louis, so STL trades him out of the country and to a crappy team for a very respectable return. The Cubs trade Jacque Jones (who doesn't want to be in Chicago) to a team that's lined up to win a World Series as soon as this year for very little return.
