Zambrano, Lilly, Burnett, Hill, Dempster/Gallagher/Prior/Marshall

Yes please.

If Jimbo gets Fuku, Roberts, and Burnett while giving up only Marquis, DeRosa, Cedeno, Murton and Gallagher, then I really don't think anyone can question him until the draft unless he gives up Prior for nothing.

Assuming he's healthy, I'd be fine with that deal. Burnett had 176 Ks in 165 IPs las year with a 119 ERA+. Problem is of course, he's almost never healthy for an entire season. He also makes a boatload of money, though is still relatively young. Edited by Have a seat, Neifi

I read elsewhere that Offman, when reporting the Fukudome signing, mentioned that a deal for a "prominent AL starting pitcher" was in the works. Can anyone confirm this? And, if so, who is the pitcher? Does the Fukudome signing allow Jim to deal Pie now for pitching? Bedard? Blanton? AJ Burnett?

Discuss.

I heard the same rumor last night. One of the more reputable posters on the Cubs forum at http://www.prosportsdaily.com said he heard from a top scout for the Blue Jays that the Cubs and Jays are closing on a deal that would involve the following:

Cubs Get: AJ Burnett

Jays Get: Marquis, DeRosa, a mid-level prospect (probably Cedeno)

This deal would only happen after the Cubs get an answer from the Orioles regarding Roberts. Personally, I don't see this trade happening because DeRosa is too valuable to the Cubs in terms of a clubhouse presence and versatility. Besides that, the Jays allegedly want DeRo to play 2b...well, if I'm not mistaken, the Jays have Aaron Hill and John McDonald as their middle infielders.

that would be a horrible trade for the blue jays. cubs get a guy who is a very good pitcher when healthy; jays get a bad pitcher, a prospect who isn't very good, and a pretty good second baseman who's on the wrong side of 30.

i guess the good side of it would be getting out from under burnett's $12M per year each of the next 3 years, but during the next 2 years they'd be giving as much to DeRosa and Marquis as they'd be getting in savings.

If you were able to pitch a healthy A.J. Burnett in the 3rd or 4th game of a playoff series, that would, in theory, give you a huge advantage.

I like Burnett alot, however, he's a constant DL headache. Do you remember all the negative publicity and badmouthing that went on last season? He claimed he was hurt, Jays said he wasn't and needed to get out there and pitch...

If it means we're dumping Marquis, however, get it done Jimbo!

I'd make the deal, assuming Roberts is aquired. It's roughly salary neutral and Burnett gives you the potential for stardom.

Even 20 starts from Burnett is better than 30 from Marquis.

Our IF depth would be a bit sketchy, as would our OF depth. We'd have to hold on to either EPatt or Murton.

I'd happily trade Marquis, DeRosa, and a prospect for Burnett. While I'd hate giving up DeRosa's versatility and leadership, it's replaceanble.

We're going to need a starter to use when Burnett is hurt, but when he's healthy a rotation of Zambrano, Hill, Burnett, Marshall, and whoever we slot in the fifth spot looks pretty good.

I would give Burnett some time off during the season just like Boston did for Burkett. It's a pretty steep deal though and that 12 would hurt if he's on the DL for a long amount of time.

Why do people say Beane won't take toolsy prospects yet the A's were involved in Milledge discussions for years seemingly?

Maybe because in the context of the cubs, our toolsy prospects is just code for "suck".

Yeah, that....

Why don't we slip that Ted Lilly character into the 5th spot? I hear he's not too terribly bad.

How the hell I forgot Lilly is beyond me. I knew something was wrong with what I typed, but this has been a long morning here at work.

Chalk this one up to a brain fart.

So, yes...

Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Burnett, Marshall does look a hellova lot better.

Zambrano, Lilly, Burnett, Hill, and Marshall looks great to me. I'd think one of our youngsters could spot start for Burnett where necessary. He gives you a lot more upside than Marquis.

With Hart and who else ready when a couple of those guys break down? I want a solid 8 to feel secure about this.

Hart, Dempster, Petrick?

thanks for reminding that, nolan. Doesn't Burnett have a history of being a headache personality? The stated rumor obviously seems too good to be true. But there could be three reasons why perhaps there is something to it:

a) maybe they think his arm isn't right

b) maybe after the hassle, they are just sick of him, and more willing to move him than you'd expect based on statistics alone

c) this is his walk year. He's got an opt-out following 08, according to Cots. If there are bitter feelings, they may well figure that he'll walk if he has a good year, and only if he stinks or is hurt will he keep the $12-per in subsequent years.

If anything to it, that could be a huge steal for us. Lou might handle a challenging personality pretty well. And rothschild also, I think. Plus, a lot of personality issues don't seem as problematic when a team is winning, which could happen for us this year, especially if Burnett is effective. Probably too good to be true. But it could be a really nifty pickup.

Cubs could also be in a kind of good position to take a gamble, pending who might be lost in the process of this and/or other deals. If you got a guy who was good for 20 games but needed a replacement for 10, Marshall and Hart might do a good job filling in even if Gallagher was moved in the hypothetical Roberts rumors.

not really. he has a lot of tattoos and at least at one point had nipple rings (i know, that's hott), so he doesn't look like your average baseball player. so everyone just assumed that he's a freak.

I thought that they moved Petrick to the pen? If not, that would work for me. Darn that Guzman, man he would have really been a nice addition.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say a Cub fan made up this trade. If you were the Jay's would you do this trade?

Possible. The Jays might want to get out of that deal enough to accept less than normal.
