Changed the topic. I'll always remember the day that I contributed such to a truly epic thread. It's like having a line as an extra in Braveheart. Like getting your name in the credits of the "Thriller" album. Like catching a walkoff HR in the stands of game 7.

I also have the distinction of being the 1st response in this thread.

The Cubs and Orioles have resumed trade talks involving Brian Roberts, and one person familiar with the talks told SI.com discussions were starting to get serious.

Jay Payton is a possibility to go to Chicago in one of the scenarios. Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher, Ronny Cedeno and Matt Murton are some of the players that have been involved in the rumors from the Cubs side since they first started up three months ago.

Including Marshall would be even worse!!!!

have we been watching the same Marshall who just keeps losing velocity....he was barely breaking 80 at times last year....Marshall can go IMO

I have no idea what his velocity was last year, but I'd be happy to have him as the fifth starter. Too bad the Cubs don't seem agree.

anyone else find it ironic that patterson could be following in his older bro footsteps again? Drafted by the same team and potentially traded to the same team. Now I know Corey is not on the team anymore but it still is kinda funny I think.

..If Payton is coming this way in the deal, you have to figure that Marquis is going the other way. I don't think there is any possible way the Cubs take on Roberts and Payton's contract without sending some contract back the other way. .... Payton has basically zero value considering how much he makes.

They can also make it work by having Orioles pick up some/much of the salary.

If Hendry were so willing to part with Marshall et al this deal would have been done already.

I don't really think that is the sticking point. Without Angelos I think a trade is done a month or two ago.

I certainly hope that Levine and Kaplan don't know what they are talking about on the Roberts trade. There have been some ugly possible deals mentioned in the last couple of days.

(in before trade)

Agree with the above poster - I just wanted to be part of the ridiculous thread this has been throughout the off-season.

There was a Cubs fan on OH who said that Kaplan went on TV and said that the Roberts deal is heating up and that the Orioles want both Pie and Ceda and the Cubs want Sherrill in the deal.

The Pie part makes me skeptical that it would ever go through, unless the Cubs are planning to trade Marquis for Crisp and Pie, Ceda, and Marshall for Roberts and Sherrill. There have been numerous reports that Pie isn't going anywhere though.

And I see no reason why this poster would lie, which is why I passed it along even without seeing it myself. There's no real value in lying about a television report that's just a rumor anyway.

I'm pretty sure that guy is full of it. I've seen him post some ridiculous stuff over the past couple weeks and he seems to just be interested in getting a rise out of people. I'm 95% sure Kaplan never said that.

Less than a week ago, that same poster said this:

I heard again today that the Cubs are moving on without trading for Roberts. they think the demands are too much for the added value. I know most of you disagree, but just passing on what I have heard. Take it for what it's worth.

Yeah, sounds like a 15 year old messing around on the internet.

I don't even think the mini flare up has anything to do with it. If Payton is coming this way in the deal, you have to figure that Marquis is going the other way. I don't think there is any possible way the Cubs take on Roberts and Payton's contract without sending some contract back the other way. That might be what the hold up has been up to this point. Baltimore might be requiring the Cubs to take Payton or one of their other bad contracts along with Roberts and trying not to take any contract back. But Marquis is probably more valuable to the Orioles than Payton would be.

Payton has basically zero value considering how much he makes.

Agreed. It has to include Marquis if we have to take Payton, but I'm sure that's the hold up with the Orioles. Makes no sense to get rid of Marquis for Crisp and then have to take on Payton as well in a second deal.

What did Kap say?

Baltimore writer said Oriole scout on way to Mesa to scout Cub pitchers. Deal won't happen for at least 7-10 days. Thinks Gallagher and Cedeno in deal for sure. Orioles also want Ceda. Doesn't think the O's want Murton - don't think he would be a good platoon player. Thinks the talks wouldn't have gone on this long if a deal wasn't going to happen. If the O's take Marquis, Payton would have to go to the Cubs. Says O's not trading Sherrill.

Is there anywhere that I can read/listen to that report?

The writer was just on Kaplan's radio show in Chicago. WGN am 720. Don't know if it's on the internet.

Are you sure he said "at least" 7-10 days, and not "within" 7-10 days? Somebody on OH said that he said a deal would happen in 7-10 days or sooner.

Great, now my credibility is being measures against the always reliable Big Bird, Belkast, Peace etc.

The writer said he thought Roberts would be a Cub by opening day, nothing had changed in the last 48 hours or was imminent and that he didn't think a deal would happen for 7 - 10 days at the earliest.

No, it wasn't one of the "insiders". It was a Cubs fan that heard the same Kaplan report and heard it differently than you.
