Am I the only one that thinks Gallagher, Cedeno, plus 2 others is too much for Roberts? :banghead:

I think it is a little much as well.

I do, too. I think Gallagher is going to be good. Cedeno, who knows. It really depends on who the other players in the trade are. If the Cubs are giving up somebody like Veal, then definitely not. If its Patterson or Fontenot, cool. If they give up Murton, it would be nice to get Sherrill coming back.

If the Cubs do go through with this, it is definitely a trade to win now which always means giving up more long term value. I'm okay with that so long as it isn't done too often. The question remains, however, will Roberts make enough of an impact to justify the deal. He might. It all depends on the difference having a more balanced line-up will make.

Does getting better match-ups against relievers noticeably impact a team's ability to win games?

Will having three lefties in the line-up mean that the Cubs will get deeper into their opponents bullpen and face less talented pitchers late in the game?

Will Soriano actually be moved to the middle of the order and if he does, will that result in more runs being scored?

How big of an impact will DeRosa coming off the bench and filling in for injured players really make?

We've seen the stat lines of DeRosa and Roberts being compared a lot in this thread, and they aren't that different, but it is these other more subtle advantages that will make this deal worth doing or not.

I think Soriano leads off regardless.

No Roberts means Theriot hits 2nd, Fukudome 3rd.

Roberts means Roberts hits 2nd, Fukudome 5th, Theriot 8th.

This is why I want Roberts. If there was any chance they'd bat DeRosa 2nd, I wouldn't. I know batting order "doesn't really matter", but I just want the top of the Cubs lineup to not suck for once.

I definitely want Theriot nowhere near the top of the order either, but him and Pie in some combination of 7/8 is going to make for a brutal last 3rd of the lineup.

If Roberts ends up coming, I'd probably do this-

Soriano

Roberts

Lee

Ramirez

Fukudome

Soto

Pie

Theriot

The top 6 looks really good, but the last 3 look brutal.

I don't necessarily agree with that. I think Theriot could be a decent #8 hitter. And I don't really think we've seen enough from Pie yet to make any kind of judgments on how good or bad he might be playing everyday.

So my sense of things is that, whether or not this trade goes through, the season (at least from an offensive standpoint) hinges upon Pie's progression as a hitter, correct?

If Pie puts together a decent offensive season from the 7 or 8 hole, the whole lineup takes on a different character. Theriot's lack of offense becomes more palatable, and the end of the lineup doesn't become one black hole after another.

I guess, in a perfect world, I would prefer a GM that could produce a team for $120 million that doesn't have two potential gaping holes in the lineup, but I guess I can be (somewhat) comfortable with this right now. Hopefully Pie realizes at least some of the potential the Cubs scouts think he has.

I get the opposite feeling. My sense is that the Cubs don't want to have to count on Pie to have a good season in order to win. While many have argued that Roberts isn't that big of an upgrade over Derosa, he is a different type of player. The Cubs clearly value Roberts ability to steal bases and be a consistent bat at the top of the order, and probably wrongly don't see Derosa that way despite his numbers.

Getting Roberts does either 1 of 2 things for the Cubs. If Roberts/Theriot are 1-2, it gets Soriano out of the leadoff spot and pushes one of he, Lee, Fukudome, or Ramirez to the 6th spot, making the bottom half of the lineup stronger, as Soto now is one of the league's most dangerous 7-hitters. If Soriano/Roberts are 1-2, it takes Pie out of what could be a tough 8-spot and puts in Theriot, whose presence would potentially give Soriano more RBI chances out of the leadoff spot, due to his ability to get on base and steal bases much better than what the Cubs had last year.

I believe that at the very least Pie will have a platoon partner in CF for LHP. Whether that platoon partner is Crisp, Byrd, Ross or someone else remains to be seen. A Pie/Ross platoon would not really be that much of an offensive burden, especially if Pie starts raking like he's done in the minors.

Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 Chicago just reported the trade for Roberts is heating up and the Orioles will have a scout with the Cubs everyday until something gets done.Levine is real close to Hendry and is preety respected in his field. That tells me Bigbird was correct in that they have agreed on 3 players and are deciding on the 4th player good job Bigbird.

Anyone else hear that report by Levine?

Yes, I heard it as well. BTW, I believe that all of Levine's "baseball beat" reports are on ESPNAM1000.com

Do you know where? I can only find a Levine interview with Kerry Wood.

The Woody interview was played this morning on Levine's "Talking Baseball" show. I can't check right now, because I'm on my phone and unable to open multiple windows, but yesterday, there was a link to all of his beat reports and interviews on the front page of ESPNam1000.com

I've said it a couple of times before and I will say it again. Rich Hill and Carlos Marmol have to be the #1 and #2 key players in the Roberts/Payton deal along with Murton and probably Patterson. It might have to be a 3 for 2 deal but AM is big on 4 and 5 for one type deals. He will go for quality more than quantity I believe in this deal. Again!! We don't have to deal Roberts. He is playing great to start ST and the Cubs can do big things in 08 with him leading off. We are not giving him away. Period. Come on Cub fans. Just face reality. You aren't going to win without him. You might make the playoffs but you'll be out in the first round unless other changes are coming. Nice team but not a world series winner.

You have plenty of starters and can afford to let Hill go and you have other candidates for closer. You've got Zambrano, Lilly, Gallagher, Marquis, Lieber and Marshall if needed as starters. Payton and Murton are almost a wash from your standpoint since Murton is a part time player. Patterson is a throw in. AM should not make the Cub deal unless the above players are coming to Baltimore. If he caves in and accepts Gallagher instead of Hill then we should also nsist on Marshall being included.

I still prefer a deal with Cleveland. We could send Roberts and one or two others for Peralta, Miller, Barfield and others and flip Peralta to San Diego in a package for Khalil Greene. Believe me AM is looking at all kinds of possibilities and he is listening to his scouts. The games are important right now in ST even though there are a lot of pitchers throwing who won't make ML rosters. It's good to see these players close up before dealing for them.

I know it's going to be hard for AM to deal Roberts but he will be dealt soon or before the trade deadline this summer. This will be a tough decision for us. I think this deal will be scrutinized when completed more than the Tejada or Bedard deals have been. Be tough Andy don't give him away. I still say Hill and Marmol are the keys or no deal

Seriously, what the hell?

Hill and Marmol are not going anywhere. Frankly I am surprised the local press isn't lobbying for Marmol to be the closer after last season. People seem to be on the Wood Train in that respect.

No, it certainly doesn't represent the majority opinion. Most people over there want a little more than most people over here are willing to give up (which is typical). I'd say most people want something like:

Gallagher, Murton, Veal, Cedeno for Roberts and Payton

Some people want Colvin for Murton, Ceda for Veal, or Patterson for one of Cedeno/Murton/Veal, but the typical trade from an Orioles fan over there is a 4 for 2 with those players involved.
