count me in the camp that is opposed to this deal. if we were still stuck with turds like delino deshields or whatever other trash we've rolled out to 2b in the past few years, i'd be for it. but the upgrade from derosa to roberts is not a huge one, so i wouldn't support the cubs paying a big price. my big problem with the deal would be including gallagher. this club is not deep in major league-ready starting pitching, and if a couple of guys go down - thankfully we have pitchers that historically have been pretty healthy, knock on wood - we'll be back to starting guys like walrond. no thanks.

Even without Gallagher, the team has Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, Dempster, Marshall, Hart, possibly Marmol, and anyone who might break out this year(Samardzija, Veal, Atkins, Holliman) as available starters. I agree with opposing this deal, but the one thing we certainly have is starting pitching depth(even if Gallagher is dealt) to make sure Les Walrond doesn't see Wrigley Field again without a ticket.

I though starting pitching was excactly what this club was deep at. Well starting pitching and middle infielders.

i guess i am not even considering marmol since he (a) sucked as a starter and (b) was lights out in the pen. i'm also assuming that dempster will either be terrible or will hurt himself. so then that cuts down the options to zambrano, lilly, hill, marquis, marshall. it's a pretty solid bet that marshall will hurt himself; is hart for real, or was last year a fluke?

i don't think samardzija, veal, atkins or holliman are viable options, unless one of them really makes a mountain of progress in a few months.

^^What he said... I used the ignore function on wrigley23, now Dexter goes & keeps this childish argument going, and worse: he keeps quoting wrigley, thus rendering my ignore useless!! Stop the insanity, please. It is beyond obvious that wrigley will not engage in a fruitful debate, so why bother responding to him?

EDIT: ignore my rant...others have already responded in similar fashion...

this is completely unrelated (which is why I thought it should probably be in this thread), but Peter Gammons just said on TV that the best thing he has seen this spring training has been Kerry Wood. He said that he knows its early and everything but he looks like Kerry Wood 2004. He also said that if he could close for the cubs, the bullpen would be set. Just thought that was interesting since I haven't heard anything like that, but I didn't think it deserved it's own thread.

7th inning Howry

8th inning Marmol

9th inning Wood

:)

He did also say that he still expected the Cubs to get Roberts. He did not speculate on how many pages this absurd thread would go before the deal would get done though.

For What it's worth.....

Hi gang!!! Just wanted to pass along some information. It looks as things with Roberts are finally coming to a end. According to my information, we have received final offers from two teams, Cleveland and Chicago. AM and his staff are reviewing each offer and willl be attempting to make a decision in the near future. The good part is that each team has a fair offer on the table, so either deal would benefit the O's. Now it is also of my understanding that we could decide to decline both offers and just hold onto Roberts for now. Either way the club has kept Roberts in the loop and have promised him that a decision will be made quickly. On a side note---- We are now looking at inquiring another vet pitcher to add to the rotation.

Maybe something will finally happen to end this thread. =D> :beg:

Yeah, he's been right about everything else so far.

Seriously, one of these times one of those idiots will win the lottery and something their "guy/source" tells them will come true.

Good to know we're finally making progress.

We hope were making progress, you certainly can not say we know based on the word of an OHer.

That was in jest.

LOL my bad...shoulda known...I really don't care about this trade anymore, and honestly we would probably be better off not making it....we would be giving up the only SS we have that could potentially be average to above average, a SP who could POTENTIALLY be our 4th best starter, a solid pitching prospect, and possibly a 4th player....not worth it....for a short stop equal in quality to Roberts? I would do it in a second, but not for a position that we already have a solid player at while giving up two players who are better than the players we have in those spots right now.

Lieber is also an option, and then Mateo is also an option. Sure there are questions about them as well, but the odds that Lieber/Dempster/Marshall/Hart/Mateo are either all hurt or absolutely awful (and they'd have to be north of 5 to be considerably worse than Gallagher is likely to give you this year) is pretty low.

A Cubs fan (apparently) who goes by 'Harry Carry' over at OH posted this...

Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 Chicago just reported the trade for Roberts is heating up and the Orioles will have a scout with the Cubs everyday until something gets done.Levine is real close to Hendry and is preety respected in his field. That tells me Bigbird was correct in that they have agreed on 3 players and are deciding on the 4th player good job Bigbird.

Anyone else hear that report by Levine?

Let me guess, you also think little green men were behind the Kennedy assassination, thanks in part to George H. W. Bush and a grant from the Rand Corporation?
