I'm just not sure i like giving up Sean, i really like the look of him and if patterson can be a speedy Utility guy to go with Derosa is the upgrade worth the talent we'll be giving away?

i really think roberts solidifies this lineup for opening day...

nothing is going to be done about theriot right now, so we might as well just live with it...

plus...the added speculation of marquis going in the trade or at least in another trade is making me jump for joy

What do people think about Payton vs Crisp?? Would we be wiser looking to offload Jason M to Boston for Crisp?. I get the feeling the only way the O's do this deal is with clearing some trash ie Payton.

Marquis might be damn useful in April/May with all those Cold home games.......

are you serious...i know everyone wants cedeno to succeed...i do too...but really i doubt he is going to win a job out of the gate over theriot and we still don't know if he is going to succeed as a solid major league starter...

so really, we are giving up two starters...gallagher and murton (who doesn't have a spot on this team) and then two reserve middle infielders...

that is not a bad deal at all really, you have to give to get man

You're giving up young pitching (have you seen the price of pitching lately) for a slight upgrade at 2B. Then on top of that you're trading an OF that could start on your team. More then a few Cub fans have given Hendry flack in the past for selling low and trading Murton in a Roberts deal would be even worse then selling low.

I don't care if Marquis is traded because of his contract, but why take back Payton? He's awful and you have a better player (Murton) to come of the bench.

I'd be fine w/ a 2 for 1 for Roberts. Maybe even a 3 for 1, but 1 of those players will be an A baller.

PECOTA projections

Payton: .267/.309/.400 (vs. LHP .282/.330/.414) average CF defense? (+2 in LF)

Crisp: .271/.335/.415 (vs. LHP .280/.337/.413) GG CF defense (+8 in CF)

Big salary differences, though.

Crisp is OK but I'd rather have him over Marquis so I would swap players. I seriously doubt the Orioles really want Marquis but Boston might with all the injuries.

I doubt the deal will be done without Veal or Ceda in it. I also don't think the O's are that interested in Murton since their outfield is already getting a little crowded. My guess is the final deal will look something like Gallagher, Veal, Cedeno and Patterson for Roberts. The deal could be expanded with Payton coming back to the Cubs and Marquis or more prospects going to Baltimore. My guess is that Hendry will want to explore better centerfield options before expanding the deal to include Payton.

I wouldn't look for this deal to get done until the start of the season. I think MacPhail will want to see if the Cubs start to get a little anxious if DeRosa looks to have continuing problems.

when aramis needs a spell day we have derosa...same for roberts...maybe even theriot...and even dlee...

i mean...having derosa fill the super sub role will play HUGE dividends on this ballclub this year...

if we don't acquire roberts...then will will have cedeno to spell aramis and theriot and then fontenot...

i really see it as more than a marginal upgrade when all of the factors are placed side by side

I'm not denying the Cubs would be a better team. That doesn't mean that you trade 4 MLB players for one.

Murton has value. Young pitching has value. Minor league players w/ MLB experience have value.

I don't even mind giving a little more then the value you're getting back, but I view that trade report as much more value going back to the O's then coming to the Cubs.

i just heard JH had turned down a barrett for khalil greene trade. that would look real good right now jimbo.

You're going to cause poor Meph to commit suicide. Where did you hear that?

i didnt really expect anyone to believe it just on my word alone. this was from a close friend of someone in padres org. some deal was about done, but was undone by JH. i dont know when it happened.

i posted it hoping someone remembered hearing something similar, mostly curious about when it happened. obviously not last year with barretts value tanked. was there any time, maybe mid 2006 with ronny struggling or before 07, that the deal made sense on both sides?

maybe i should've started a new thread.

It seems the Orioles beat reporters are hearing similar things to Levine, from Jeff Zrebiec's column:

If Roberts goes -- and I fully expect him to -- Brandon Fahey and Freddie Bynum would be the two top internal candidates to replace him and neither should be a starting everyday second baseman at this point in their careers. That's why I fully expect middle infielder Ronny Cedeno and/or second baseman Eric Patterson (the younger brother of Corey) to be included in the Chicago Cubs' return for Roberts

I think this would be a decent deal, fair enough for both teams. Here is your 25 man if that's the case:

Rotation:

Zambrano, Lilly, Dempster, Hill, Lieber

Bullpen:

Marmol, Wood, Howry, Eyre, Wuertz, Lahey, Ascanio

Starters:

Roberts, Lee, Soriano, Fukudome, Ramirez, Soto, Pie, Theriot

Bench:

Blanco, Ward, DeRosa, Cintron, Payton

If Lieber/Dempster suck, you still have Marshall and Hart at AAA starting, not being the long guy wasting away in MLB.

If you want another lefty in the pen, you can use Pigniatello instead of Ascanio. I think Neal Cotts is pretty much out of the picture.

The bench is pretty weak, but you have a nice mix of lefties and righties and DeRosa could get 2 or 3 starts a week if Ramirez and/or Fukudome need a day off. Ward will likely get 1 start a week in place of DLee, and Payton will be in there vs. tough lefties only to give Pie a break. The thought of Cintron getting any meaningful PT is putrid, but whatever.

SI.com pretty much confirms the report:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/specials/spring_training/2008/03/03/heyman.roberts/index.html

The Cubs and Orioles have resumed trade talks involving second baseman Brian Roberts, and one person familiar with the talks indicated discussions were starting to get serious.

In one of the trade proposals being discussed, outfielder Jay Payton would accompany Roberts to Chicago.

Starting to get serious? So it took two months to finally get serious?

When a man is a courtin a young woman serious like, it takes some time. You have to ask the Father (Angelos) if it's ok once you agree to take the next step. That could take a while if the dad has special feelings for his kin.

Trading a prospect is not giving up on a prospect, nor is it giving away a prospect. Value such as what Roberts brings requires losing something of value. The Cubs do not have a lot of trade value at the major league level, and must resort to trading prospects for value. Gallagher is not regarded as a sure thing or can't miss prospect by anyone in the business of grading prospects, so if anything, the Orioles take the greater risk in a deal with Cubs by trading away their best MLB player for no sure-fire MLB talent and no can't miss prospects.

I hate when people do this, but I'm way too lazy to look it up myself right now, so I'm gonna do it anyway. Does Payton at least have some semblance of value as a platoon partner for Pie? Is he, at the very least, a respectable hitter vs. LHP? Can he still play much CF (again, at least passably)?
