I'm sure this has been asked like 14 times in the entirity of this thread but I'll be damned if I'm looking for it. Is this the longest thread ever to be posted on NSBB? Just curious.

There was a chitchat thread once in social. I'm not sure but I think some transactions and or game threads may top this as well.

Milestone Post thread and Movie thread

The Movie thread is longer. The Milestone Post thread is only 209 pages long. I expect this thread to be the longest on the site currently in a week or so, passing the movie thread.

I tried to find a bit of Brian Roberts news to go along with this, but it's not easy. I can tell you that the sentiment from Orioles fans increasingly seems to be that they would like to keep Roberts and wait for the trade deadline rather than get rid of him for middling players like the Cubs have. I happen to not agree with them (I think the Orioles would be best served making the trade if they get Gallagher+2 others) but it is interesting to track how both fanbases perceive the trade as time goes on.

I seriously doubt anything will happen on this front before the season. Orioles' best interest would indeed be served by waiting for a team to become desperate enough to overpay.

i just heard JH had turned down a barrett for khalil greene trade. that would look real good right now jimbo.

You're going to cause poor Meph to commit suicide. Where did you hear that?

Agreed. No way the Padres would have done Barrett for Greene. Not a chance.

I heard it too.

Assuming you're talking about June 2007 (when Barrett was being shopped and then traded to SD, so I assume you're talking about in the midst of those negotiations), let's forget Hendry for a moment and think about Towers.

Do you think he would trade a 27 year old SS who is pretty well liked in San Diego and at a position that San Diego had no legitimate backup for who also plays great defense for a 30 year old catcher who has terrible defense, just got into a fight with his pitcher, is batting no better in 2007 than the SS, and at a position where San Diego already had a decent player?

To believe this story, you have to believe that Towers is incredibly dumb to offer the deal to top off the fact that Hendry would have to be dumb to reject it. I find that way too far of a leap to make. I doubt Hendry would have rejected it (especially in June, when Lou wasn't happy with either of his SS's) and I know that Towers wouldn't have offered it.

That's not entirely true. I remember reading that the original deal between the Cubs and Padres was Michael Barrett, Jacque Jones, and Cesar Izturis for Greene, Bowen, and Linebrink. However, that trade fell apart for money reasons so the Barrett for Bowen and a prospect trade went through.

Haha. Yeah, I *really* don't think that has any substance to it at all. Where did you hear about that?

I do remember Linebrink being part of a deal with Barrett orginally can't say for sure if that deal included Greene though or any of those other names.

Yeah, I don't recall hearing Greene's name mentioned.

ESPN 1000 back when the trade went down. Bruce Levine reported that Barrett, Jones, and Izturis for Greene, Linebrink and Bowen was the original deal but that one of the parties back out and the revised deal went through.

Sorry to insert this into the Barrett for Greene thread...

Baltimoresun.com[/url]"]If Roberts goes -- and I fully expect him to -- Brandon Fahey and Freddie Bynum would be the two top internal candidates to replace him and neither should be a starting everyday second baseman at this point in their careers. That's why I fully expect middle infielder Ronny Cedeno and/or second baseman Eric Patterson (the younger brother of Corey) to be included in the Chicago Cubs' return for Roberts. I know the Orioles view Cedeno more as a shortstop than a second baseman so if they get Cedeno in the deal and not Patterson, I could see them making a minor trade before Opening Day for a veteran second baseman.

Levine on ESPN1000 reporting that things are really hot between the cubs and the orioles, expanded deal may include Jay Payton(Puke).......

And Marquis I'll bet if Payton is coming from the O's.

I think expanding the trade may be the route to getting it completed - though the Cubs are more likely to get a Payton dump. I'm guessing that the Cubs' scout(s) in FL are looking more at secondary Orioles targets than at Roberts.

I can see somthing like this when all said and done Gallagher/Murton/Patterson/Cedeno for Roberts, with Marquis for Payton as the possible add on. Not saying i like it just have that feeling.
