I love these two intermingled conversations...

a)hating on everyone for thinking Melky is anything but a 4th OF (which is absolutely true)

b)talking about a Peavy trade and how the pads could use one of our 2b as a stopgap for Antonelli

The irony is delicious.

Instead of sitting back and making smart ass comments, how about reading the entire posts rather than just skimming?

Where in my post did I say anything about one of our 2b's being a valuable trade chip? Where? Quote me on it and post it here. Please. I'm dying to see it.

As long as you have the Red Sox - Yankees paranoia going, the Twins will insist on and get any prospects they want. As a back up plan, the Twins have the West Coast (Angels - Dodgers) paranoia. These four teams have the young players and the money to lead the Santana/Cabrera sweepstakes.

I'm not so sure. The Cubs may match up very well with the Twins. I think many of us undervalue Hill. In only his first full year, Hill posted a 1.19 WHIP and a 3.92 ERA. That is not too shabby at all. Hill is cheap for another year or two and could be a solid #2. (He would be an immediate upgrade over Garza, Silva) If I'm the Twins I look real hard at a guy that put up those numbers in the majors in his first full year.

For the Cubs to consider trading Hill, Pie, plus whoever else for Santana, they would have to first sign Fukudome for CF and go with a cheap RF platoon (Murton & Luke Scott/Seth Smith). Also, don't forget that trading for Santana, signing Fukudome, and probably signing Matsui adds about $30 million to the budget for the new owner. I don't think that's going to happen without dumping a lot of salary (Marquis, Dempster, Eyre, etc.).

:pig: Santana, Z, Lilly, and miraculously healthy Prior and Wood would be the greatest rotation in the history of MLB. :pig:

You poked fun at my post after taking it out of context. Did you not? That's certainly the way I read it.

"The irony is delicious" comment clearly meant to poke fun at the reference that San Diego would take a stop gap 2b in exchange for Peavy when I clearly said that Infante wouldn't even be a valuable chip in the trade.

If that is not what you meant, please clarify what you mean by "the irony is delicious".

Here is what I said, word for word.

Here's a thought, though. San Diego is probably not going to get Peavy signed to an extension. They need outfield help and they have a huge hole at 2b.

Antonelli, Matt

I'll be shocked if he's with the big club opening day. None of our 2b's are guys who block Antonelli. I think I heard the Padres lost Blum also. Infante would be a guy they could use to hold down 2b until Antonelli is ready and then as a back up later. Obviously, Infante would not be one of the major trading chips for Peavy, however.

I reading stories that the Mets are seriously after Santana and might be willing to trade Reyes for him. How about the Cubs getting in on the action and making a 3-way deal:

Mets get Santana (from Twins) and Cedeno (from Cubs)

Twins get Pie, Marshall, Patterson, and Gallagher (from Cubs)

Cubs get Reyes (from Mets)

Add in whatever tweaking needs to be done to complete the deal.

Sign Fukudome for CF, probably sign Matsui for 2B (unfortunately), and go cheap in RF (Murton or Murton & Luke Scott/Seth Smith platoon).

1. Reyes SS

2. Fukudome CF

3. DLee 1B

4. ARam 3B

5. Soriano LF

6. Murton or Platoon RF

7. Soto C

8. Matsui 2B

Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Dempster, Marquis as starters

Looks good to me! =D> =D> =D>

Why wouldn't the Twins just take Reyes and Millege or some similar package?

So, yes you admit they do not have a huge hole at 2b. And why even bring up 2b in a trade for Peavy when its not a need for them and we don't have anyone of worth to trade.

Its really not worth arguing over and this will be my last post about it, so be my guest to get in the last word, but I'll spell the comparison out for you a bit more

Melky is a 4th OF, yet Yanks fans think that every other team out there is dying to get him and want him to be a part of the package to get Santana

Any of our 2b, range from possibly average starters to average utility men. You said Infante (for ex.) wouldn't be a major part of a deal for Peavy after you state that you believe SD has a huge hole at 2b in what I was assuming was a thought on us acquiring Peavy. Its not a huge hole and we don't have 2b worth a crap (besides DeRosa).

Article from Stark today on ESPN that says the Mets are in no way, shape, or form even considering moving Reyes.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3132761

Ready to rumble

• We keep hearing people speculate that for the Mets to get Johan Santana, they'll have to trade Jose Reyes. Well, if that's true, Santana is heading for some other destination, because teams that have inquired about Reyes' availability this winter, even in a monstrous deal, report that the Mets refuse to trade him, talk about him or even think about talking about him. So anyone who predicts he'll eventually be a Twin (or anything else) is "dreaming big-time," says an executive of one team. Ditto David Wright, by the way.

So the twins would prefer Pie, Marshall, Patterson, and Gallagher over Reyes?

I don't think so.

You are still taking my post out of context. But, whatever. I have no desire to attempt to explain it any further.

Please give me a break!!!! Cubs have no shot at "Santana" this will come down to the Yankees and the Sox. Rumor has it that Boston is willing to deal their stud Ellsbury along with one of their pitching prospects and a few other prospects. I don't see him with the yankees as the Twins want Joba and Yankees won't move him. The Twins have tons of pitching coming up through their system so I can't see the Cubs having anybody they want........

Probably correct, but there's no guarantee Boston will give up what Minn wants. And I'm fairly certain the Cubs could match the packages the Yankees are rumored to actually be willing to offer.

Where'd you read that the Red Sox are willing to deal Ellsbury? Everything i've read says the only holdup in the trade is that Boston won't part with him.

If the Cubs don't get Santana it's not gonna be because someone gave up a better package. It's because the Cubs aren't interested. Not saying that the Cubs have the best stuff (prospects/cheap MLers to offer) to offer, just saying it won't take that.

Truer words were never spoken.

One of the many reasons ours is a laughingstock franchise.

Yeah, Hill wouldn't appeal to them at all. It's not like he's cheap and with proven MLB success...oh, wait...

Does anyone know what Ellsbury's ceiling is? What little I saw of him last season showed no hr power (though he did hit quite a few doubles in the playoffs). It seems to be that he is being greatly over-valued, and though he would get on base more, the Twins would face a pretty big dropoff power production from the center-field spot, IMO.

If Ellsbury, Lester and second-tier prospects got Santana, I wouldn't hesitate if I were the Sox. Santana, Beckett and Dice-K/Bucholz might be the best three-man rotation the world has ever seen.

Examples:

[Hill + Fukudome + $5 mil.] vs [santana + Murton]

[HIll + Tejada + $3 mil. - Pie or Murton/Marshall/Marmol (whatever the package is to obtain Tejada)] vs. [santana + Pie/Murton]

[Hill + Crawford + $6 mil - Pie/Marmol/Cedeno] vs. [santana + Colvin/Patterson]

What are Hills 2007 stats compared to Santana's?

Hill 195 IP, 3.92 ERA, 119 ERA+, 8.45 K/9, 1.195 WHIP, 40.3 VORP

Santana 219 IP, 3.33 ERA, 130 ERA+, 9.66 K/9, 1.073 WHIP, 57.7 VORP
