Mariners could get in:

Johan Santana-S- Twins Nov. 30 - 9:55 am et

The Mariners have talked to the Twins about Johan Santana, according to the Seattle Times.

They certainly have the young talent that the Twins are seeking, with the newspaper mentioning Adam Jones, Brandon Morrow and Jeff Clement as possible targets for Minnesota. Given the Twins' reported interest in Jacoby Ellsbury, Jones would seemingly be an especially good fit as Torii Hunter's potential long-term replacement.

Does anyone know what Ellsbury's ceiling is? What little I saw of him last season showed no hr power (though he did hit quite a few doubles in the playoffs). It seems to be that he is being greatly over-valued, and though he would get on base more, the Twins would face a pretty big dropoff power production from the center-field spot, IMO.

If Ellsbury, Lester and second-tier prospects got Santana, I wouldn't hesitate if I were the Sox. Santana, Beckett and Dice-K/Bucholz might be the best three-man rotation the world has ever seen.

Scouting Report: Amazing athlete with a great work ethic. Ellsbury has consistently won awards for his defensive play in centerfield. He is extremely fast and knows how to run the bases (but does get picked off a little too often). Great on base ability. Gap power with the ability to leg singles into doubles and doubles into triples. Not much home run power. Projects well as a major league lead-off hitter. Doesn't slump too often because you can't turn off his blazing speed. Team leader. Lettered and excelled in five sports in high school, including football, where he could have played at a high collegiate level as a kickoff returner. However, he enjoyed baseball the most. Could stand to bulk up a little bit. Arm strength is average.

MLB Comparison: Kenny Lofton

Wasn't Sam Fuld rated higher than Ellsbury while in college? Maybe Fuld doesn't have Ellsbury's ceiling, but I find the two somewhat comparable. Granted, Fuld is 2 years older than Ellsbury, but.....

Fuld's minor league career numbers: .296 .377 .417 794

Ellsbury's minor league career numbers: .313 .389 .425 814

What would Minnesota do with Jeff Clement? I don't understand the mention of him here.

Uh huh. Yeah, you could do that. Mauer would really improve their bench

Minnesota doesn't start Mauer at C nearly as much as some other teams. He made 119 starts there in 2006, and 88 games there in 2007. Part of that is due to injuries (Mauer has played a decent amount of DH both seasons and been hurt the rest of the time) but the point remains that the Twins need a very good backup. Plus, many of Mauer's injuries got worse because he was playing catcher. If they had Clement, they could let Mauer DH most of the time.

How much longer is he going to be able to catch without jeopardizing his health? Mauer DHes and fills in for Clement and Morneau.

So, at this point in his career, you're already having Mauer back up Clement? In that case, I suppose he makes sense for Minny.

Yanks may offer up Hughes now:

Johan Santana-S-Twins Nov. 30 - 6:53 pm et

ESPN's Buster Olney believes the Yankees are leaning towards offering Phil Hughes to the Twins in a Johan Santana deal.

Hughes, Melky Cabrera and Austin Jackson/Jose Tabata for Santana not only would be very costly for the Yankees in terms of talent, but also in cash, since they might decide to go out and get Aaron Rowand to replace Cabrera in center field. Olney thinks the Red Sox are already hedging their bets in the Santana talks by discussing Dan Haren with the A's.

As far as is known, the Cubs quickly determined they were not a potential destination for Santana. It wouldn't seem possible with Tribune Co.'s sale of the team dragging.

But if the Cubs were involved, the price would probably look something like this: Rich Hill, Carlos Marmol, Geovany Soto, Felix Pie and maybe someone like lefty Donald Veal or overpowering closer Jose Ceda. Those are the types of players the Twins are seeking in a bidding process that could end this week at the winter meetings in Nashville.

The Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Angels and Dodgers are all involved to some degree, with the Mariners slipping in as a dark horse. Almost all packages include a center fielder — the Yankees' actually includes two, Melky Cabrera and Austin Jackson — and a potential front-of-the-rotation arm or two.

The most intriguing of those is Boston's Clay Buchholz, who threw a no-hitter in his second career start, with the Yankees' Phil Hughes, the Mariners' Brandon Morrow, the Angels' Nick Adenhart and the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw not far behind.

The Twins could wind up with a veteran or two, such as Coco Crisp, Johnny Damon or Wilson Betemit, whom they would immediately flip elsewhere.

Phil Rogers is insane. An offer Hill/Marmol/Pie/Marshall in my mind is blowing away the offers from both evil empires. Why in the world would the Cubs have to part with either Soto or Veal along with the big three they are offering is beyond me. If the Cubs wanted to win this Santana Derby they could easily but at this point with ownership issues there's no way Hendry gambles the farm on one year of Santana.

Clement would likely move to DH he was acquired. He's a passable at best defensive catcher. Joe Mauer has legitimate Gold Glove skills behind the plate. Of course Clement would catch 2 games a week (probably becoming someone's personal catcher and DHing the other games)

Bruce, if you're still here could you clear up one thing? I know we will offer up some of our pitching this weekend to improve the team like you said, but are we doing this with the intention to acquire a RF'er and not go after Fukudome? Or is this with the intention of getting the speedy lefty (infielder i'm assuming) and still trying for Fukudome?

Right now their No. 1 priority is a left-handed hitting RFer. While they await word on Fukudome, they'll talk with other clubs about possible trade targets. Things will settle after RF is decided.

It might be now or never for the Twins if they wish to trade left-hander Johan Santana.

According to major-league sources, Santana has informed the Twins that he would not waive his no-trade clause during the season, ending any chance that he could be moved before the July 31 non-waiver deadline.

Players with no-trade protection occasionally adopt such positions when they are in the free-agent years, fearing that their performance could suffer if they change teams and/or leagues just months before hitting the open market.

The Twins have said privately that they will be content to keep Santana if they do not receive the right offer this off-season, then entertain the possibility of trading him in July. But Santana's stance greatly increases the chances that the Twins will act quickly.

Bruce have the Cubs had any talks with the Orioles about Tejada?

He said in another thread that he's asked and that Tejada would cost to much to us in terms of money, and that's likely not going to change unless the Orioles eat a chunk of the contract (which they won't).

which is just insane considering the money and years they seemed perfectly willing to waste on matsui.
