Looks like the Red Sox are willing to trade Ellsbury now.

With the Minnesota Twins insisting on center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury in any trade for pitcher Johan Santana, the Red Sox have altered their offer and have told the Twins they are willing to include the outfielder.

But sources say the Red Sox have also told the Twins they will not trade left-handed pitcher Jon Lester and Ellsbury together in the package they are offering.

The Yankees, meanwhile, have informed the Twins that they are going to pull their offer off the table soon -- perhaps by Tuesday at the latest -- unless they get an answer. The Yankees changed their offer on Friday, adding pitcher Phil Hughes after much internal debate, to go along with Melky Cabrera and a third prospect.

The Yankees have told the Twins they will not give them one of their top prospects as the third player in their offer -- not pitchers Ian Kennedy or Alan Horne, or outfielder Austin Jackson, for example.

Hughes, Melky and one average prospect for a top 3 pitcher? I don't think so. Is the Sox offer better?

I don't think so. Am I the only one who thinks Philip Hughes is still one of the (if not the best) top pitching prospects in the game? I don't see how the Yankees are favoring Chamberlain over him, unless there's serious concerns about his health.

Nah, it's just the Yankees and Red Sox are the only ones who will spend 7/150 to keep him.

I ask because I see people on boards claiming that it's reported that Santana has basically told that to the Twins. Are they just pulling this out of their butts?

Report: Johan will only go to Yanks or Sox

Santana

In addition to telling the Twins that he won't accept an in-season trade, Johan Santana informed the team he's only willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to the Yankees or Red Sox, the Providence Journal reports.

Santana apparently is as frustrated as the Yankees about how long this is taking and would like a resolution soon. If it's true that he's ruling out a trade to 27 of the 30 teams, it probably doesn't change much in the current negotiations. If any other team was in the same ballpark with an offer for the left-hander, it's done a great job of keeping it quiet. Dec. 3 - 12:37 am et

Johan Santana-S-Twins Dec. 3 - 12:13 pm et

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Twins are upset about Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner's public comments regarding Johan Santana and could potentially pursue tampering charges.

"We’re not happy. We’ll deal with this internally," a team official said. The newspaper also reports that Santana has not said that the Yankees and Red Sox are the only teams that he'd accept a trade to, contrary to previous speculation. Given the Yankees' supposed Monday deadline, expect plenty of news about a potential Santana deal over the next 12 hours.

As much as I'd love santana....and I'd love im a lot.

WE. NEED. OFFENSE.

So, there's no way you'd take Santana, and have three very good to great SP? What happened to good pitching beats good hitting anytime?

ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Yankees are "making noises that they might pull out of the Johan Santana talks for good."

The Twins are said to have once again asked for Ian Kennedy along with Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera, and the Yankees "apparently turned down that proposal immediately." It's unclear whether the Yankees intend to stick with Hank Steinbrenner's self-imposed Monday deadline for negotiations, but Stark writes that there are indications that the deal might be on "life support."

How does Hank Steinbrenner have the gumption to state a deadline for negotiations? Didn't we all learn our lesson that he's full of poo when he reopened negotiations with ARod. It wouldn't be any different with Santana.

This is gonna be back and forth:

Johan Santana-S-Twins Dec. 4 - 12:05 am et

A Red Sox official told Yahoo! Sports Tim Brown that he believed the Yankees and Twins were "very close" to completing a Johan Santana trade.

His seems to be the minority opinion at the moment, but all one side has to do is blink for a deal to get done, or at least for contract talks to start. The current guess is that Santana will seek a six-year extension worth around $150 million.

Report: Twins, Red Sox turn in with deal near

The Twins and Red Sox have concluded trade talks for the night with a deal likely within reach, the Boston Globe reports.

The Globe says there are indications that the deal would be Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson for Johan Santana. ESPN's Buster Olney also believes that's the package. Crisp doesn't seem like a great fit for a Twins club that figures to have little chance of contending next year, though as outstanding as he is defensively, he is being undervalued as a trade property. The Twins would also be getting a potential No. 2 starter in Lester, a possible No. 3 or a closer in Masterson and a likely starting second baseman in Lowrie. Phil Hughes is a better bet than all of them, but the Twins must not rate him as highly as many do. Dec. 4 - 3:34 am et

If this is indeed the package, we could have topped it pretty easily. Fill enough of a smaller market team's holes cheaply and with a little upside and you can make these video game trades.

Hill/Pie/EPatt/Marmol crushes this package.

"Hendry gave a couple of vague examples that at least indicated whom he's not trading.

"Every now and then, we get somebody (saying), 'Well, you probably don't want to do it, but how about (pitcher) Rich Hill?' And we say no." "

Hmmmm.....another Cub "untouchable"....that makes me a little nervous. I believe CPatt, Wood, Prior and Pie fall into that category also.

Subtract Hill and it's inferior. Include Hill and it's a bad move for the Cubs.

Man I really don't want Boston to get another superstar.

Garnett, Allen, Moss, Santana in the last year.

Meanwhile, Chicago's top superstars are Brian Urlacher, Carlos Zambrano, umm....Ben Wallace?

The Red Sox are going to be a scary team next year. Real scary...
They were a scary team this year. They're like my MLB 05 team on the PS2, it's crazy.

Seriously, if they get Johan and they stay healthy they could win well over 100 games.
