The Mets are said by rival executives to badly want Santana, but they have taken Jose Reyes and David Wright off the table and there is serious doubt if they have the wherewithal to make a deal unless the Twins have a particularly high regard for Carlos Gomez and Mike Pelfrey. A young center fielder such as Gomez or Cabrera is a must in this trade as the Twins look to replace Torii Hunter, who recently signed with the Angels. The Red Sox (Jacoby Ellsbury/Coco Crisp), the Dodgers (Matt Kemp) and the Angels (Reggie Willets) are all expected to vie for Santana, and an NL executive said to watch out for the Cubs (Felix Pie) and perhaps the Mariners (Adam Jones).

It's going to be tough, but you've got to at least kick some tires.

If the Cubs could work out a deal for Santana, I'd think they could part with Hill. Even if they threw in Pie, and any other prospect I can think of - it would be worth it. With Santana in the rotation, an outfield with Soriano, Fukudome, and Murton would be absolutely fine.

A rotation of Santana, Zambrano, Lilly, Dempster, and whoever would be tough.

Hill, Pie, Colvin, Samardzia and Veal shoukld do the trick. Too much? Depends on how long of an extension hed be given.

It would be wonderful if Hendry could figure a way to pull this trade off. A 1-2 of Santana and Z would be pretty good. As far as signing Santana long term, we can only hope that the Tribune sells to someone with deep pockets that would be willing to sign him before he hit free agency.

I wouldn't trade for him if we couldn't work out an extension with him.

Why not? Don't get me wrong I would love to have Santana signed to a long term deal, too. But, I would be willing to take a one year risk on him, with the hope that he would resign prior to the end of the season. The Cubs would have the rest of the winter and all season to get an extension worked out.

Do you think????? Hendry????

Pie, Hill, Marmol, Colvin??? Maybe Hendry could talk them into Marquis and eat some cash. That would be a devistating rotation.

The life of a Cubs fan....always dreaming.

Eh...don't get me wrong, Santana is an amazing pitcher, but he doesn't really address their most glaring needs. Hill put up some really good numbers...but remember how frustrating it was how little run support he got? How does Santana fix THAT?

Honestly, I don't see why we would have to add a whole lot more top-end talent beyond Hill and Pie.

The Yankees deal being talked about is Hughes, Cabrera, and another pitcher.

The Red Sox are offering a package featuring Crisp and Lester and the Twins want Crisp replaced with Ellsbury. I doubt the Red Sox relinquish Ellsbury (although they should).

It seems to be that Hill's value is comparable to either Hughes or Lester and Pie is at least as valuable as Crisp or Cabrera.

I think if we could add Fukudome or Tejada then the offense would be good enough with the rotation we would have. The pitching and offense would both be improved.

I have a hard time believing the Twins would not be interested in Pie, Hill, and Prior for Santana. Like mentioned earlier - only do it if the Cubs can work out an extension with Santana.

Whether the Cubs "need" offense more than Santana - that is kinda ridiculous. Derrek Lee underachieved in 2007, and I expect an offense cored around Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Soto, DeRosa, and hopefully Fukudome (barring injuries) is going to be better in 2008 than 2007. Coupled with a rotation of Santana, Zambrano, and Lilly - the Cubs would be MUCH stronger.

If the Twins are seriously considering deals like Hughes + Cabrera (NYY) or Ellsbury + Lester (BOS) then Hendry would be an idiot not to at least throw Hill + Pie out there and see where that gets us. At worst, that's a very comparable package to those of the Yankees and the Red Sox.

I was thinking about this today, given the lame packages the Yankees and Red Sox are supposedly offering up for Santana. What if the Cubs offered Pie, Prior, Cedeno and Marshall? That package has bigger upside for the Twins than anything the other teams are offering. Minny gets an immediate 4/5 starter in Marshall, a young SS with upside in Cedeno, and all of Pie's potential. Plus, the huge upside of Prior if he returns to health.

Cubs would have a rotation of Santana, Z, Lilly and Hill, with one of Marquis or Dempster or Gallagher/Hart. Holy cow, yes I'd do it.

We need offense, yes, but it's hard to argue against a rotation with 4 potential 15+ win guys.

Plus, Soriano missed almost 30 games and had just 70 RBI. You think if he's healthy all year you'll get at least 90 RBI out of him.

Well no one else has done it yet, so I'll do it. The inevitable "pile of crap for a Cy Young winner" proposal.

Theriot, Marquis, Pagan, Ohman and Neal Cotts for Santana! WOO!!

EDIT: I forgot about Infante. He could also be a piece in that deal.

Don't forget Fontenot, Dempster, and Koyie Hill. Overwhelm them with quantity!

They are getting a scrappy, gritty shortstop, a quality middle-of-the-rotation innings eater, the next Carlos Beltran, and a lefty reliever. I don't see how they COULDNT take that deal.
