The 1969 Cubs should've made the playoffs but didn't. The 1984 Cubs should've made the World Series, but didn't. The 2003 Cubs should've made the World Series, but didn't. You know, things don't always work out as they should. I'll gladly take a trip to the postseason, and I'll enjoy it too. Those of you who don't want them to make it, don't watch when they do. Let the rest of us fans who actually prefer our team to win enjoy the ride.

What an assenine comment. If you've read this thread you'd know that the whole argument for wanting the cubs to miss the playoffs is because fans would like to be able to point to more than 3 out of the last 40 seasons as seasons we had a chance.

The word you're looking for is asinine.

What's "assenine" is your logic. People don't want the Cubs to make the playoffs because we've been lousy in the past? That's just flat out stupid.

No real fan would ever want the team they supposedly support to not make the playoffs.

Correcting spelling...the sure sign of someone who has a weak argument.

I'll bold the asinine comment. If you've read the thread at allyou will realize that those who may not want the team to win, only do so because they are fans who would like to "enjoy the ride" more often than they have been able to in the past. Your implication that those who do not want them to make it to the playoffs aren't real fans just make you look ignorant/you haven't read the thread/unable to follow very simple logic that has been clearly delineated multiple times.

If you're going to comment on the intelligence of my post, at least freaking spell the words right that way you don't make yourself look like a complete... nevermind.

Regarding the body of your post... all that needs to be said is that if you don't want the Cubs to make the playoffs, you're not a true fan. It's that simple.

This isn't an a=b situation, as has been pretty well explained throughout the thread that you apparently aren't paying attention to.

I want the Cubs to make the playoffs, I assume that everyone does. But the question is, if we back into the post season, will management see it as a "we're going the right direction" type of deal, when it seems pretty clear that we're not.

There's a lot about this team that needs to change, from top to bottom. Would making the playoffs this year help or hinder that change?

Whether the Cubs make the I think they resign Dempster as a starter and move Marmol, Howry up with Wuertz, Wood as the main four with Shark and possibly Veal coming up with the Cubs finding a LOOGY.

everything was going well there until the dempster starting part

Dempster approached the Cubs during the year and a promise was made, his arm has recovered and he can be a strong middle of a rotation starter...Using Marshall as trade along with Murton or Jones and Ohman could produce Hawpe or even Abreu.

What makes you think Dempster would be a good middle of the rotation starter?

He was pretty terrible as a starter with Florida and Cincy.

But your assumption of Management's thinking is also not an A=B. If the Cubs make the postseason, it still doesn't make the difference if you are looking at total wins. All moves are meant to make the team better. For all of our analysis and stat crunching and evaluation of management we forget that they are fans too and want to win just as much.

If "taking the right direction" means 3 more years of futility, I don't think that is the right direction either. There has to be a happy medium and despite the struggles early this season, this team was created with the goal to contend and it was a contending team. There were holes, yes but not ones that could be overcome.

The offseason is at least a month away. Lets wait until it happens to worry about it.

That is why people like nilo say it's a flawed assumption.

not to beat a dead horse, but isnt it too late? doesnt anyone besides me feel that management believes their moves are enough and "in the right direction" even if we dont make the playoffs?

wrigley is full, we might be +.500 in wins, making the playoffs isnt going to make abit of a difference. Management isnt going to change if we dont make the playoffs, management will change because of new ownership. It wont have anything to do with the playoffs.

I say bring on postseason

Marshall, Jones and Ohman for Hawpe or Abreu. We would have to eat basically all of Jones' and Ohman's contracts and even tehn it will probably not happen. Teams should know that Ohman and Jones are over the hill.

And then its Marshall plus two bad veterans for Hawpe or Abreu?

According to MLB07: The Show, if you make the playoffs our payroll limit increases at least 8%, whereas if we don't it could possibly go down. So yes, let's make the playoffs.

 I'm liking the logic.

We basically have already increased payroll by 8% for 2008 without signing anyone new.

Let's go for 8% more in the offseason. Wonder what percentage ARod's salary would increase payroll? 8-)

Me too. I honestly think the Cubs have a decent chance to get to the big show. As long as we don't have to play San Diego first, I think we will have the advantage in the Division Series because of our pitching.

But first things first. We have to get there.

After a night like tonight, I want these losers to choke so badly and miss the playoffs so the players, manager, coaches, and front office have all winter to sit and think about why they lost...and then do something about it.

So you'll be cheering for the Reds tomorrow?

I would perfer if the front office had all winter to find new jobs...

Ugh ... we're 7-3 in our last 10 games.

Or is this one of the "I'm more outraged than thou !!" measurement threads.

Not sure where to put this, so it goes here...

Does anyone else find it at least slightly suspicious that the Stros decide to pitch 3 tomato cans just in time for the Crew to roll into town?

I'd like the Cubs to make it, but it seems like the deck is stacked against us, whether just by happenstance or by something more.
