An email from a friend of mine:

Izturis is:

-- Cheaper

-- An All-Star when he plays for Tracy

-- Less likely to blow up at the pitching coach

-- Not bitter

Jack Wilson just reached the "Welcome to Hell" stage this season.

Although I'm starting to wonder about the Cubs' GM. Izturis may have become a spare part with the arrival of Ryan Theriot, but for a Pirate To Be Named Later? And just a week after trading for Slappy Kendall?

LOL, haven't read a damn thinga bout it. Just know it my heart.

Better than the Aram trade?

Wow. I've never seen such euphoria for a addition by subtraction trade.

The Neifi trade was much better. He had $3M left on his contract and the Tigers took on the whole contract, as well as sending us their 3rd round pick from 2005.

yeah, it's hard for me to get too excited about the trade of a guy who should have never been on the team in the first place. maddux for a pirate to be named later and a few months of izturis' crappiness...nice trade, hendry.

Maybe It will work out to be a 3-way deal where the PTBNL will come from the Toronto system? Tim Wilken can pick up one of his guys from their system.

We had to send the Dodgers $2M cash to get Izturis, now we're eating the remaining 2/3 of his contract to get rid of him, and he's already been paid for playing about a full season's worth of games. This has been an expensive fiasco and a good example of how money does matter. Teams with smaller payrolls can't easily afford these types of mistakes.

You're right. This is all on Hendry for starting this mess in the first place. We should have never traded for Izturcrap in the first place.

If I calculate correctly the total financial damage incurred by the Cub's involvement with Izturis is roughly $7.25M. Hendry sucks, he's just fortunate enough to have the payroll to outspend his mistakes.

That's pretty horrid. Let's look at some of the wasted funds. Because it's always fun to stick a needle in one's eye.

2007

$4.25M -- Izturis

$4.75M -- Marquis

$3.00M -- Floyd

$2.55M -- Blanco

$5.33M -- Jones

$3.83M -- Eyre

$4.50M -- Howry

$3.25M -- Rusch (might be insured since he could not play).

$31.46M in unnecessary and bad contracts. This is a third of the budget. For that kind of money, the Cubs could have gone out and gotten 2-3 real impact players. There's no one on this list that couldn't be replaced from within the farm system. It's just wasteful and profligate spending, and it sickens me. Teams like Atlanta and Oakland who are successful year in and year out don't pay large amounts of money for this kind of drek.

For that money, we could have signed Jeff Suppan or Gil Meche and either Carlos Lee or JD Drew along with Soriano, DeRosa and Lilly.

Being frugal with bit player's contracts, maximizing the farm system, and signing 1 year deals for relievers allows for more flexibility and, frankly, gets you better players all in all.

I'm trying to figure if the Macias, Neifi, Lenny Harris, or Izturis trades had more irrational joy attached...

At least with the other 3, trading them stopped Baker from using them...Piniella had really quit using Izzy.

Yep. This is the type of stuff I point to whenever someone tells me a big payroll isn't important. It gives a GM the luxury of making a lot of mistakes that small-market teams can't afford. $31.46M in bad contracts would sink a lot of teams. Hendry also has the luxury of ownership that is extremely tolerant of backloaded contracts, which makes it even easier to cover for mistakes in the short term. Of course backloading bites you in the ass eventually.

Just my initial reaction for Izzy being gone. But in reality we traded Maddux for a PTBNL....

....from the Pirates.

Your friend needs to grow a brain. All-Star when he plays for Tracy??

LOL, that's rich.

I think he meant played (past tense), which he was.

I will give Itzuris credit for this statement:

"I just want to play every day and now I get an opportunity to go to Pittsburgh. I don't know the situation over there, but I'm going to miss this team," Izturis said.

"There are a lot of good people around here. Good team, but it's business. ... I have to give credit to the young guys like Theriot and [Mike] Fontenot, they bring energy for the team."

Is Izturis going to propel the Pirates to that 2nd place finish you were speaking of Jake?

Or are all bets off now?

Wow. This thing totally what I wrote. I was saying about how Itzy was an allstar with the Dodgers when Tracy managed him.

I was saying third, not second.

This wasn't a commentary about how good our team is, but a commentary about how bad the NL central is.

I still think we can finish higher than the Reds, 'Stros and Cards. But, that's not saying much.

I don't think Itzy figures in that one way or the other.

Still a real possibility. The Cards started Kip Wells out of the all-star break.

OK. First, this ate a post of mine, then it put my last post out of order?

Script issues? Or, is this the whole world being out of order and, once today's trade is nullified, everything will be back to normal?

Atlanta's got Wickman and Andruw Jones this year, Tim Hudson and John Thomson last year.

Oakland's got Eric Chavez, Jason Kendall, and Mark Kotsay.

You can spend even larger amounts of money on high paid dreck too. The White Sox won a world series with a team full of middling salary guys and no superstars. The Cardinals did it the other way with a few studs, and the rest dreck. The Red Sox had a couple superstars, and then a bunch of role players.

Don't overspend on bad players. Shocking revelation.

While I don't disagree with most of the list, I have to wonder who in our minor league system could put up a 146 and 101 ERA+ with a 71:17 and 36:12 K:BB ratio the past two years?

Those are Bob Howry's numbers as a Cub.

Hudson - $8.5 million for a 126 ERA+ and a slightly more than 2:1 K:BB ratio. He's not overpaid dreck.

Normally, Andruw isn't either but he's been pretty bad this year. I really doubt it'll last.
