Murton had his chance and flied out weakly to center. Based on this, he'll never amount to anything.

Yes, that was sarcasm. It's April 15th, Murt's going to get his play time this year. Lou can't ride Floyd, his legs won't hold up and he knows it. Floyd's obviously getting more playtime right now, but it's very likely not a permanent arragement.

In other news, the rest of our offense sucks too, which should be of considerably more concern if it continues into May.

It should be noted Murton lined out after a good AB in which he worked the count. He still is up there with DLee and Aram in having good ABs, and he tagged the ball right at Freel. It happens sometimes, but still a good, solid AB.

Hopefully he'll average more than 0.9 PA/game next week. Somehow, I doubt it.

I'd only doubt it if Aramis isn't back.

I would like to think that Cedeno could crack a 300 obp against lefties. Maybe Im overrating him as a player. I still think he could do that and I give Jones no chance of doing that. It's no outs in the ninth. Give me the OBP over the power.

I think you're reaching here. As Colt Pacer pointed out, Cedeno is, for whatever reason, helpless against lefties. He has also proven time and again that he is not, by any stretch of the imagination, even remotely adequate when it comes to OBP. So you're agrument that Cedeno is "the OBP" is somewhat of a joke. I know you are comparing him to Jones v lefties, which is perhaps the biggest mismatch since Dave Parker circa 1990 v a chocolate eclair, but we're splitting hairs here.

As for everyone's questions about Cedeno's minor league stats, he was a completely inept offensive player for most of his career, until he somehow figured things out in'05, the year he was called up, and the basis for his worthiness to be comsidered a major leaguer at this point. To his credit, he pounded the PCL for 230 ABs in '05. Before that however....

Here are his OBPs in the minors:

'01 Rookie league .398 (with a .355 BA)

'01 Lansing .237

'02 Boise .275

'02 Lansing .269

'03 Daytona .257

'04 West tenn .328

In the majors, in 626 ABs he has a career OBP of .278. Ronny has proven he is NOT any kind of OBP threat. On the contrary, you'd be hard pressed to find a guy with a worse record in the majors right now when it comes to OBP. As we said earlier, for whatever reason, he is even worse against lefties, if that's possible. He might be the only guy in the major leagues right now who I would actually prefer Jones to when facing a lefty.

You missed his 2005 where he had a .403 OBP (.048 IsoD).

ETA: I had initially said Ronny had a .48 IsoD.

The truth is that Murton is a better player than two of our starting OFs right now, and he's been below 4th OF on the depth chart this year.

What a crappy strategy this is.

Can someone explain to me the argument that Floyd needs to be in there while Ramirez is out? I don't get it. Why should that matter? Is it just for the SLG?

I don't have a problem with Floyd getting a significant number of starts when he's hitting well, but I don't get how this has anything to do with Ramirez, as a few people have said.

Murton needs to be getting some time somewhere. Either RF or LF. And please, for the love of God, get Jones out of the 3-hole.

Floyd just worries me in the outfield.

I know Murton's not winning a gold glove this year or anything, but Floyd's range is laughably bad right now. I see Izturis and our 3Bs covering as much of left field as he does, and that's alarming.

I don't think defense per say is the be-all ned-all of baseball, but you've gotta at least be able to LOOK like you're covering some ground out there. I think we've been real fortunate that through pitching and cold weather, other teams haven't been hitting the ball in teh air as often as they will ater in the season, but Floyd is almost stationary out there and that's over the line in my book for a starter.

can someone check the record player? i think it's skipping.

No kidding, it's year 5 of the Hendry experiment and the lineup is still littered with crappy hitting outfielders and guys who can't get on base. And seniority remains the single most important factor to decide playing time.

That's Hendry for ya..

There are two broken records.

One is me whining about Murton.

The other is continuous losing and bad management.

They are linked this year.

Assuming Soriano is healthy, give me a Floyd/Soriano/Murton outfield please.

Ship JJ off in a package deal for a SS.

Eh? Eh? :D

I'd like to see Theriot at SS actually. Maybe JJ for a reliever to replace Ohman?

I'd be for that too.

like omg, floyd isnt hitting for enough like power to like play leftfield.

Don't you understand? Cubs fans have to be miserable about something. Why not a charismatic Redheaded guy that likes to take pitches?

I thought Lou called Murton the "adorable redhead."
