Cards scrap heap production is over-stated by Cub fans. Its like Card fans saying Neifi is over-producing because he hits one GW grand slam.

I don't know.

Tony Womack - '03: 349 at bats, .226/.251/.307. OPS+ 40. '04 with Cards: 553 at bats, .307/.349/.385. OPS+ 93 (career high). '05 Yankees: 329 at bats, .249/.276/.280. OPS+ 47.

Nunez - '04: 182 at bats, .236/.275/.319. OPS+ 56. '05 with Cards: 421 at bats, .285/.343/.361. OPS+ 84 (career high). '06: 322 at bats, .211/.303/.273. OPS + 48.

John Mabry's 4 best seasons were as a Cardinal, his best after being cut by the Mariners at age 34.

Al Reyes, Kiko Calero and Josh Kinney all came out of relatively nowhere to have great years as key set up men.

Fernando Tatis had ops+'s of 118, 140 and 118 for the Cardinals and then disappeared.

Kent Bottenfield was a career swing man who won 18 games with an era+ of 115 as a starter in '99.

Of course the most obvious example of Cardinals luck is Chris Carpenter.

I'd add Bo F. Hart. No world burner but .277 .317 .395 was over his head.

and John Rodriguez. Breaking in at age 27 with .295 .382 .436 line?!?

D. Goold is writing on deadline so I am passing along the info:

Carpenter has been cleared to throw.... to prepare as if he's starting a game next week (April 10, in Pittsburgh).

Boooo!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, I'm glad. I want us to get into the playoffs after actually being the best team, because that will be the team that's war tested enough to fight to the World Series. And I'd never wish injury on someone. When your team is already allegedly cursed, you don't want to invite bad karma...

I believe in this team and this manager and feel they can beat The Cardinals of 2007, with or without Carpenter.

Ryan Theriot had nearly 150 at-bats worth of a .934 OPS.

Geez, Cubs catch all the breaks.

Carp has now been sent home and will be getting an MRI.

This is bad.

:(

yeah, that's not good news for the Cardinals. I'm still really surpised they didn't give him an MRI when he first had the problem.

Wow, they didn't? That seems strange.

Sounds like bursitis? Maybe? I don't know. It sucks.

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Houston - After receiving a tentative go-ahead to make Tuesday’s start against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging today to determine the cause of renewed stiffness and swelling in the former Cy Young Award winner’s right elbow.

Carpenter, who threw a side session without incident Saturday afternoon, awoke Sunday to find his elbow had swollen much as it did following his April 1 start against the New York Mets.

Carpenter met with the team’s training staff, who arranged today’s examination by team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta. Carpenter returned to St. Louis Sunday night unsure whether he would be placed on the disabled list.

"I don’t know what’s next except that we’re going to get it looked at tomorrow," Carpenter said Sunday morning.

Manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan remained tight-lipped about Carpenter’s situation before the team’s series finale against the Houston Astros.

"We’ll let you know later instead of putting it out in bits and pieces," the manager said.

Sunday’s relapse intensified organizational concern about a condition initially described as more an inconvenience than something potentially serious. Carpenter threw Saturday’s side session without first undergoing MRI. He threw in the outfield Friday without a problem then, after taking the mound Saturday, predicted he would start Tuesday in Pittsburgh. Sunday’s game notes listed Carpenter as that day’s starter against Tom Gorzelanny.

"It’s obviously very disappointing," Carpenter said 90 minutes before Sunday’s first pitch. "Everything was fine after I threw yesterday. I was encouraged. I wasn’t expecting this."

Upbeat Saturday, Carpenter appeared downcast after emerging from the trainers’ room Sunday.

"I was excited about how it went [saturday]," Carpenter said. "The play was to play catch on Friday. If nothing happened, throw a side on Saturday. If nothing happened, continue on. Everything looked great until this morning."

On Monday Carpenter was unable to touch his right hand to his right shoulder. He said that the sensation was similar Sunday but not quite to the same extent.

Carpenter confirmed that he would return to St. Louis for clarification of his condition.

Duncan referred a question to Cardinals head trainer Barry Weinberg, but the club had not made its trainers available to reporters this season in response to players’ expanded privacy rights regarding the release of injury information. Teams may seek a waiver from athletes in order to explain medical issues.

General manager Walt Jocketty traveled to Memphis Sunday morning; La Russa suggested Saturday that the club might turn to its Triple-A affiliate for a replacement, if needed.

Duncan identified Blake Hawksworth as the organization’s "sixth starter" last week but also held out the possibility of "a bullpen game" should Carpenter not make his next turn. The bullpen option appears more remote if the club believes Carpenter’s absence will be confined to one start. Sunday’s reoccurrence suggests a more serious problem than first anticipated and makes it more likely the club will put Carpenter on the disabled list retroactive to April 2.

A trip to the disabled list would be Carpenter’s third in the last four seasons. He was disabled last May with right shoulder bursitis. In September 2004 he experienced a nerve disorder in his right biceps that caused him to miss the club’s postseason push to the World Series.

During December’s winter meetings the Cardinals picked up its 2008 option on Carpenter while signing him to a three-year, $43.5 million extension with a $15 million option for 2012.

That's a move the Cubs would, er, have made.

Am I a bad person for not caring? I mean I don't wish him injury, but it's nice to see the Cardinals lose their ace like the Cubs have for the last three seasons off and on.

Last time I checked, Zambrano's never been on the DL.

No you're fine. It's not like you're celebrating it.

Early speculation says bone spurs; out 4-6 weeks.

Blake Hawksworth will be getting the start tues.

What's the reaction over at GWRB?

No one is walking off cliffs yet. Wells and Wainwright have looked good enough that it isn't the apocalypse that it should be and we are all honestly really content because of the world series. If we hadn't won last year, people would be slitting wrists right now.

Well at least you have Preston Wilson to put up monster offensive numbers. With him and Skip and So, you really shouldn't have to use pitchers at all.

Wow, that sucks. I'm happy as a Cubs' fan, but Carp is an awesome pitcher to watch (well, when my team isn't losing).

Bigs or AAA? 'Bird will know soon

One way or another, today promises to be a landmark day in the life of Redbirds right-hander Blake Hawksworth. The 24-year-old will either make his Triple-A debut tonight at AutoZone Park against New Orleans or join the St. Louis Cardinals in Pittsburgh and make a spot start

Hawksworth said of a possible big-league call-up. "If something like that came to happen, that's when I'd think about it. All I've been thinking about is that I'm getting ready for my first Triple-A start."

In the meantime, a few feet down the hall in the Redbirds' clubhouse, Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty met with the Memphis managerial staff to discuss the club's options.

The North Vancouver, B.C., native is tentatively set to make his Memphis debut against the Zephyrs tonight on nine days' rest. Hawksworth hasn't pitched since March 30, when he threw five impressive and scoreless innings in an exhibition game against the Cardinals at AutoZone Park.

Sounds like it'll be him. I've wanted to see him get a chance anyways, but not this way.. Talk that Carp may need bone spur surgery and be out 4-6 weeks.. that's just hearsay right now til stuff is official!

That's what you get for drafting a Cardinal!

J/K I have him on a team, too. :(

Ironically, I refused to draft Carpenter for three straight years because I was so sure he'd get injured again or come back to earth, and the one year I relent and pick him, this happens. Only in one of my five leagues, but still.
