LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals claimed reliever Todd Wellemeyer off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday, and plan to add him to their roster this weekend. Wellemeyer, a 28-year-old right-hander, was 0-1 with a 10.34 ERA in 12 games for the Royals this season, allowing 25 hits in 15 2-3 innings. He has a career record of 6-8 with a 5.65 ERA. "We've always liked his arm. We've always thought he was someone we'd be interested in acquiring," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said before Tuesday night's game at Los Angeles. "We'll just put him out there, break him in, see what we've got." [Link]
Cardinals Receive RHP Wellemeyer POSTED: 4:27 pm PDT May 15, 2007 Los Angeles, CA -- (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday were awarded the contract of right-handed pitcher Todd Wellemeyer on an outright waiver claim from the Kansas City Royals. Wellemeyer, who was designated for assignment last week by KC, was 0-1 with a lofty 10.34 ERA in 12 games this season. Originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the fourth round in 2000, Wellemeyer was solid out of the bullpen for the Royals last season when he posted a 3.63 ERA in 28 appearances. He had been with Florida but was claimed off of waivers by the Royals in early June. [Link]
Keisler to start Tues., Carp likely to DL As usual, there will be more detail on all of this when my notebook goes up. But in the meantime, here are the morning updates from the pregame chat with TLR: * Randy Keisler will start in Carpenter's place on Tuesday. It would be his fifth day, after he went on Thursday in Memphis' opener. * The corresponding move likely will be to place Carpenter on the DL. He flew with the team out of Houston, then headed back to STL last night. He's being checked out by Paletta today. * Scott Spiezio is ill; he apparently has something resembling food poisoning. It's uncertain whether he'll come to the park or stay back at the hotel. -M. [Link]
Bigs or AAA? 'Bird will know soon By Jim Masilak April 9, 2007 http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/41/410113m.jpg One way or another, today promises to be a landmark day in the life of Redbirds right-hander Blake Hawksworth. The 24-year-old will either make his Triple-A debut tonight at AutoZone Park against New Orleans or join the St. Louis Cardinals in Pittsburgh and make a spot start Hawksworth said of a possible big-league call-up. "If something like that came to happen, that's when I'd think about it. All I've been thinking about is that I'm getting ready for my first Triple-A start." In the meantime, a few feet down the hall in the Redbirds' clubhouse, Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty met with the Memphis managerial staff to discuss the club's options. The North Vancouver, B.C., native is tentatively set to make his Memphis debut against the Zephyrs tonight on nine days' rest. Hawksworth hasn't pitched since March 30, when he threw five impressive and scoreless innings in an exhibition game against the Cardinals at AutoZone Park. [More in URL] Sounds like it'll be him. I've wanted to see him get a chance anyways, but not this way.. Talk that Carp may need bone spur surgery and be out 4-6 weeks.. that's just hearsay right now til stuff is official!
Christmas came a day early for the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers reached agreement today with free agent right-hander Jeff Suppan on a four-year deal with a club option worth $42 million. A source familiar with the negotiations confirmed the agreement, which apparently took place Saturday evening. Suppan has to pass a physical for the deal to be official but that is not expected to be a problem. Suppan, who will be 32 on Jan. 2, pitched the last three seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals. He went 44-26 over that span to increase his career record to 106-101, including a 12-2 mark against the Brewers. The Brewers made their big move on Suppan last Tuesday, meeting with him and agent Scott Leventhal at the home of team owner Mark Attanasio in Los Angeles. General manager Doug Melvin and manager Ned Yost participated in that meeting, which lasted five hours and included dinner. http://www.jsonline.com/watch/?watch=1&date=12/24/2006&id=16389
Angels ink Speier to deal Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.com Posted: 11 minutes ago Francisco Rodriguez, Scot Shields and now Justin Speier. The Angels, adding to one of the game's top bullpens, have signed Speier to a four-year, $18 million free-agent contract, FOXSports.com has learned. The length of the contract, first reported by ESPN.com, is a surprise, considering that Speier, a right-hander, recently turned 33. The Red Sox, Orioles, Indians and Giants were among the teams that had been interested in Speier, who was perhaps the top reliever on the free-agent market. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6188086
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Scott Spiezio and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a $4.5 million, two-year contract on Thursday, keeping one of the team's top reserves with the World Series champions.
Cardinals re-sign IF-OF Spiezio to two-year deal November 16, 2006 ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals were not about to let their most versatile player get away. Scott Spiezio, a switch hitter who played five different positions last season, signed a two-year contract with the defending World Series champions on Thursday. Financial terms of the deal, which includes a club option for 2009, were not disclosed. In the postseason, Spiezio added six RBI, including a game-tying two-run triple in Game Two of the National League Championship Series against the New York Mets. "You hear the term winning player and that's what Scott is," Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty said. "Scott showed once again why he has been tabbed with such a label. Scott's leadership, versatility and production in the clutch are such strong qualities." [More in URL]
And Izzy did not ruin Carp's performance (mind you Johnson, Looper, etc all blew chunks before him).. he did his job.. Taguchi and Eckstein didnt get that ball.. I have no problem with him walking Hafner to load em but Taguchi was poor.. catch that ball, no run scores.. next batter he gets to fly out.. Cards woulda been leading 3-2 after 8 but there was some piss poor effort out in the OF there.. Izzy pitched a scoreless 9th.. then the team came back giving him the deserved win..
Come talk to us when you're close to 20 games under .500. Then you might know what it's like being in our shoes. Sorry.. my bad.. it does suck though knowing what a 5 game losing streak is and everything starting to fall apart
Ponson is sent to bullpen By Joe Strauss ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 06/18/2006 http://images.stltoday.com/stltoday/resources/ponson18story.jpghttp://images.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/_photos/2005-08-15-anthony-reyes.jpg The Cardinals have notified pitcher Sidney Ponson of at least his temporary assignment to the bullpen while they contemplate promoting Anthony Reyes from Class AAA Memphis to make Thursday's start against the Chicago White Sox. Pitching coach Dave Duncan informed Ponson of the move Friday night, three days after Ponson lasted 3 1/3 innings in a 9-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ponson on Saturday acknowledged being told of the move but had little else to say. Asked if he had anticipated the move, Ponson said, "Not really. ... But I guess they have their reasons." Several factors contributed to the move: Ponson (4-2) has struggled since leaving the disabled list and was recently encouraged to more aggressively participate in pre-game running drills. The Cardinals' previously rock-solid rotation has recently sprung several leaks, dramatically increasing the workload on a stressed bullpen. And, Reyes has impressed at Memphis and in spot starts against the Kansas City Royals and the Houston Astros. Reyes is 4-1 in 11 starts for the Redbirds. His numbers include a 3.04 ERA and 65 strikeouts with just eight walks. He has allowed just 0.97 baserunners per inning. [More in URL]
